One of those old time historic places you never find any more. We always stop here on our way to Tahoe from Sacramento. We've been stopping here for at least 30 years. Great on any evening when it's snowing outside and the fireplace is roaring. No better place can be found.

I am now the not so proud owner of a tuna melt that I did not want thanks to the Kyburz Lodge and Restaurant. "Why?" You might ask. And rightly so. I realize it was stupid to drink anything before heading back from Tahoe. I realize this now. Anyway! I saw this place, the Kyburz Lodge, and thought to myself, "Must pee, they must have a restroom." Indeed they did. But upon getting out of the car I noticed this sign, "$5 minimum to use the Restroom." Not just one sign. These suckers are plastered everywhere in this lodge, not only that, but upon entering the Lodge we were accosted by a crazy eyed man to make sure that we were sitting down to eat and not just there to use the restroom, which we were.
Don't you think it should be some kind of law, that unless residential, bathrooms should be free to use. It is a human right, like water, like air. It's just not fair.
So I pretended that I was there to buy something. Your very basic menu. I chose a tuna melt, and then made a run for the bathroom.
Got back in the car. Oh the smell. The smell! Like cat food! No way was I going to eat that sandwich that smelled like Whiskas. $8 Goddamn dollars for a tuna melt that smelled like Friskies. I realize I could have said "Dude. Here's my $5 bucks" but I was to embarrassed and wasn't really thinking clearly because I was in pain!
We had to stop a few miles later to throw out the offending sandwich.

The Kyburz Lodge is a very strange place. Lots of deer heads, some pool tables, fireplace. Bad food, ok selection of beer. But if you have to use the bathroom, make sure you're eating there as well. On the plus side they do have lots of video games including Ms. Pacman. Hence the one star. If you do have to use the restroom, might I suggest a tree, or, even better, the St. Pauli Lodge a few miles down the road. They have Hot Strudel!
