Oh boy what do I say. First off, I love dive bars. I almost always have a good time when i go to one. However, I went to La Alcachofa with a couple of friends because they wanted to watch a boxing match, and no other place in town was showing it. Â We get to the club, and each of us get frisked by their "security officer" who seemingly didn't believe we we were over 21. (We're all in our mid twenties mind you.) He finally lets us in, and wow is it dive-y. In fact, dive-y doesn't even begin to describe it. This bar is more of a monument to the working man's vices: sports, cheap booze, and very "special ladies".
The bartenders were all very nice, but honestly it was hard to differentiate between them and the "special ladies" that roamed around having "fascinating" conversations with the men who were regulars at the bar. There also appeared to be a shadowy back room where who-knows-what was going on.
After the boxing match, a local group started playing banda, which, if you like that style of music, was probably pretty good.
I'm honestly not sure what to do about the rating for this place. I'd give it a 1 for quality, because of its extreme level of shadiness, but a 5 for its sheer amazingness. So I'll give it a solid 3: the middleground between the two.
I feel like there's so much more to say, but I'll leave that for a later review after further chances to take in La Alcachofa's atmosphere.
C'mon guys... we all see this place when were drivimg down to salinas or church. La Alcachofa is chalk full of cheap booze very "fun :)" ladies and the best mexican music you can find at 3 am! Deffinatly go and get your two front teeth knocked out by the lady on the pool table :) ENJOY
