La Grange Saloon is now Louie's Place Saloon and Grill as of summer of 2012.  If you are up to a beautiful drive - visiting Louie's will be worth your time.  The food is amazing - use fresh vegetables from the garden.  Check out the back patio area - what an amazing atmosphere for a family/friend outing.   Make sure you have a chance to meet the new owners - wonderful locals who are helping make La Grange a great place to visit.  Check out their website on Facebook!  I can't say enough - looking forward to heading up there today for their Sunday BBQ!

This place is awesome.  Beautiful drive to get here, great atmosphere and delicious food.  Worth a trip from out of town or if you're on your way through or out of La Grange or the lake.  Fried pickles are awesome, I also had the roasted jalapeño burger and heard the prime rib is ridiculous.  Make a night of it, go here.

I heard that the place got new owners and I was not sure what to expect. I must say that I was very pleasantly surprised. Great food made of fresh stuff, and some combinations that might not sound right, but wow are they good.

Always try to eat/drink here when going to Don Pedro Lake. Also we often while at the lake. There are two things on this little strip, a post office and a bar, both essentials.  I've never had a bad visit to La Grange and I've been here many times.
The building is old, so is the interior and it has a lot of great character. Huge solid wood patina'd bar, pool table and large backyard/patio where they will occasionally have music.  It's the type of place where you order beer or a shot, anything else might get you strung up in the rafters.
The food is much better than you would ever expect. Most items are house made and my favorites are their prime rib and desserts. They offer a full menu and no one I've ever been with there has been disappointed.
Good drinks, great food, rustic atmosphere, always a good time.

Fun, wild west decor, and guess what?!!

    KARAOKE on Saturday nights!  Yay!

We'd driven through this little cute town hundreds of times without ever stopping in at the well-named Saloon & Grill.  But we've always been playing "beat the clock" to get to our destination and never had time to stop in.  However, last weekend, after an all-evening outdoor activity, we wanted to have a rest stop before driving back to the Bay Area, so by the time we drove through La Grange, we were so happy to see the Saloon still open, and even happier when we learned it was karaoke night!

Of course we stayed to belt out a few songs... they have a nice song book, and some really friendly singers and drinkers.  The bartender was welcoming and great, and we felt right at home.  Yes, definitely a biker bar, in a town that if you blink you'll miss it!

Later when I told my brother about it he asked if we'd eaten there (we hadn't -- it was way too late).  He eats there all the time and recommended the taco salad, the burgers, basically everything, he said was absolutely first rate.  I believe him.  Next time we'll get there early, eat dinner, then stay to sing.

There's a big pool table, a long old fashioned bar, and lots of gold country and biker memorabilia on the walls and ceilings.

Okay, so this isn't really "Bay Area", but I'm including it in my Karaoke Bay Area list because if you're a junkie, you never know when you'll be needing a microphone fix and this place is a lot of fun.

My friends and I decided to go camping at Lake McClure, which is about 40 miles outside of Modesto. The directions weren't great once you got off the highway but we finally found the road we were supposed to be on and set off. There were lots of questions raised about whether or not I was sure we were on the right road (a valid point since I kind of never know where I'm going, but I'm pretty good at faking it). We started getting further and further out into the middle of nowhere, on small country roads with a bright full moon, and I made a bunch of jokes about how this is how all horror films start. The other girls didn't really appreciate that. I was following the maps on my Blackberry as much as I could, until I completely lost the signal. Still, I knew we were going the right way when we got to the town of La Grange --- and that we were close. In La Grange we passed a sign for the La Grange Saloon and Grill and I wished we had a little more time to stop there, since anyone who knows me knows that I have a soft spot for anything with "Saloon" in its name --- especially bars in the middle of nowhere with a bunch of motorcycles parked out front.

On the way home from camping, my friend asked if I would drive home and I said sure, as long as we could stop at the La Grange Saloon and Grill on the way. She said sure. We pulled up to the place and there was a huge line of motorcycles outside. We walked in and people turned around to stare at us, but we just went up and got a table. The bartender took our order --- two jack on the rocks and a bloody mary, and some menus for food. The bartender was really nice and quick with our drinks. Then a waitress came over and took our order for food. She wasn't as fantastic as the bartender, but she told us that the day before was her birthday, so I attributed it to a hangover (I like to think that everyone is like me). The food was great and reasonably priced. I had a huge bowl of chili - the best bowl I've had since I made some - and I couldn't even finish it.

The bar had all sorts of stuffed animal heads on the walls and a bunch of dollar bills tacked to the ceiling (still have no idea why). More and more bikers started piling in. There was one older woman at the bar greeting everyone who came in and they were hugging her and wishing her a happy birthday. We had noticed this fantastic backyard and I said I wanted to finish my second drink there and have a cigarette before we took off, so out we went. My friends got out there first and by the time I made it outside they were talking to the birthday girl and a biker. They introduced me --- Carla and Little David. Little David had long black hair in a ponytail, a long handlebar mustache of sorts, and a broken ankle. One of my friends asked him about it and he said he was fine because he could still ride. Carla proceeded to tell us that David was single. And then David proceeded to hit on us. He asked if I had to work the next day and when I said no, he said to give the keys to the other girls and he'd drive me back to the city on his motorcycle. Um, no thanks, I promised them I'd drive and they have my dog in the car. And then Big Dave, wearing a black leather vest with the name of his bike club on it and a bandanna tied around his head, came up and asked Little David if he wanted to do some shots. Then they looked at us and asked if we wanted to --- of course I said yes. I mean, when in Rome, right? I'm pretty sure it's bad etiquette to turn down a shot in a biker bar. So I had a shot, bought Carla a drink for her birthday and then bid them all farewell. Little David asked if I liked riding motorcycles and I said of course (who doesn't) and so he gave me his and Big Dave's phone numbers so we could call them the next time we're around and they can give us motorcycle rides. And then there were hugs all around --- Little David insisted on walking us outside and giving us even more hugs.

So, in summation, great bar, great bartender (I forget her name, sorry), great food, and some of the nicest people you'll ever meet. If you're ever lucky enough to find this little slice of heaven, go in and you won't regret it!
