Not a lot of choices for lunch in downtown Cloverdale.  Walked inside,  wished we walked right out.  No one was inside, the place is dark, the bathroom not  clean, and the waiter and owner (?) not friendly and argumentative.  Let this be a lesson, trust your instincts!  The meal started with really excellent tortilla chips, but it went down from there.  All the food was bland, tasteless, flavorless.  I'll probably never go back to Cloverdale, and will never step foot into this restaurant ever again!
Review Source:Great Margaritas !!! We tried the Shrimp Enchiladas(lots of nice big shrimp), and the combo with chicken enchilada/chile rellano - GOOD GOOD GOOD !!! The salad (shredded lettuce & a tomato slice) that came on the plate had a good vinegarette - never had anything on our lettuce before at other restaurants and this was a pleasant suprise. Â Lots of food, neither one of us could finish it all. Will definately go back when in this area.
Review Source:Excellent food with great service always met with a friendly smile. Â Very authentic Mexican food served in large portions. Â A small town gem. Â We drive 30 minutes just to go here to eat because it's so good. Â With all the good Mexican food in CA it's hard to stand out but this place does! Â Try the guacamole.
Review Source:AMIGO!! Â Nicest people ever. No joke.
A little apprehensive at first as we were the only ones and it was roughly lunch time, our nerves were put at ease.
The server was the nicest man ever, EVER. Â Very honest too. Â We asked for his recommendation and when I asked about the chimichanga, he said that he thought it was too greasy. Â HONESTY!!!! I love this place. Â He recommended the fajita so we got that and some nachos.
Steak fajita was solidly yummy. Â Really tender and flavorful meat. Â It was a little oily, but not too much so. Â Nachos were great too, loaded with toppings and if I remember correctly white queso? It's been about a month so I could be wrong, but it was real cheese and yummy. Â HUGE portions.
Admittedly, this is not the best Mexican food we've ever had, but it's a solid place. Â Ask for a recommendation and maybe you'll find a real gem!
If we were locals or in the area again we'd come back for sure.
Don't go here. Â Save yourself and your stomach. Â We made the mistake of going here only because it was Monday and most of the restaurants in the local towns were closed. Â Really a bad idea.
This place failed. The food was waaay substandard Mexican.
Beans - flavorless, but salty
Rice - flavorless Uncle Ben's with tomato sauce mixed in, but salty
Carnitas - flavorless, but salty - I have never experienced flavorless carnitas before
Guacamole - salty. Â How do you get avocados to taste so bad?
Price was about 50% higher than it should have been IF the food was edible.
Did I mention salt?
Someone told the crew in the kitchen that when they dish out flavorless non-descript Gringo slop Mexican, put a lot of salt on it. Â Guess what folks, salt brings out the flavor of food, but it has to prepared so that it has a taste, otherwise it is just salty, flavorless slop.
Did I mention salt?
My wife and I came here when we were staying in Cloverdale on a mini vacation and we were far from pleased. We arrived before the dinner crown, around 5 pm and they were not very busy yet for some reason our waitress was no where to be found throughout the entire meal. We were tempted to leave some cash for our drinks and leave, but we decided to stick it out because we are fans of Mexican food and really wanted to give it a try. Turns out the food was not very good either. We would not recommend it.
Review Source:This long-standing Cloverdale fixture is hardly great, but it is basically decent, reliable American-style Mexican food and better than many.
It's very standard and no dishes are great but similarly they are at least decent and better than the likes of Chevy's. Â This is basic, filling food and one will be best off choosing the basic standards. Â Beans are standard, but tasty, and the basic regular dishes are the ones to choose, simple and reliable. Â The more creative the dish here, the less likely one is to be happy. Â The beer selection is weak and the rice is standard and not very good (but that's a common problem with this type of place). Â
Anyway, we go here periodically when in town, so it's good enough for revisits but only if we're in the mood. Â Otherwise, though, it really is a very mediocre, standard Mexican place and, though not really bad, is not even great by those standards.
Greasy, greasy, greasy Mexican food. Â The only redeeming (to me) quality of the food was that the tortillas on my quesadilla were corn, not flour.
Other than that the food was too dense, the service was slow & the decor was dark and gave the place a dank atmosphere.
Considering we were only 1 of 3 groups in a huge restaurant for Sunday evening dinner, we should have listened to the decor and stayed out of there.
Love the the look from the the outside. I can't wait until they open the outdoor seating area! I like the decor in the bar too. There are cool things to look at on the walls. I am a pescetarian (the only meat i eat is seafood) and deer are my favorite animals but it has a forest 'diarama' with deer on the ceiling that I think is pretty cool. It's fairly dark with neon lights that make you and the people you're with have attractive complexions =). The food is good and the service is good. When/if they open the outdoor seating I will give this place 5 stars. Â I'll post pic's next time I visit.
Review Source:Stopped here for dinner on the way home from Mendocino. Â Wish I'd gone somewhere else. Â My waitress apparently did, too. Â She seemed unhappy about having to work there. Â Slow, bare-minimum service despite the fact we were 1 of just two tables in the dining room. Â Barely said a word to us and had a pained look on her face the whole time. Â The manager back-filled a bit but was slow, too.
The chips sucked. Â They were tough like shoe leather. Â Between that and the poor service and the menu that looked like a bazillion other Tex-Cal-Mex menus, I nearly walked out. Â Only being tired after a long day kept me there.
My experience was redeemed slightly by the food. Â It wasn't great, but it was okay. Â If this is seriously the best Mexican restaurant in Cloverdale, next time I'm in the area I'll eat at a hamburger place.
I had a bad experience in this place. I went to the bar to have a few beers asked the bartender if change the TV channel to baseball game.not some lame Spanish channel. Like Benny Hill in spanish. I asked this guy several time to change the stupid channel. It was only him and me in the room. Still not responds, so eat my average burrito left. Did I tip him?
But I met a nice couple going into the restaurant , after we chatted about stuff they asked me what I thought of this place. They went down the street.
I'm giving it two stars because it was clean, but old place.
Ever since discovering this place many years ago (I used to live within a block) I have loved their food. Everything has a great fresh homemade quality to it and always tastes fantastic.
The service is always speedy even when there were three of us ordering the huge super burrito. We sat down and ordered drinks and we must have gotten our burritos within 5 minutes of placing the order. The burrito comes packed with beans, rice, cheese and plenty of meat. They pour a tasty red sauce over it and some quacamole as well. Usually I can only eat about half of it, but this time around I'm hungry enough that I eat the whole thing. A rarity with a burrito this size!
Want to save some cash on the burrito? Take it to go and it comes to $5.99 instead of the eat in price of $8.99. Parking on the street can be tricky at times, if there aren't any spots just go around the corner and park in the lot. The restaurant has a full bar with a functioning juke box that has a lot of classic Mexican music as well as some country music and Steve Miller and Fleetwood Mac CDs.
If you're in town, stop by and give this place a try. The combo plates can be a bit pricey, prepare to pay more here than at other Mexican food places, but I assure you, its very worth it.
I came to Hacienda for lunch and was one of about 5 people in the whole place. Â The interior is pretty cool, all really heavy chairs and tables that look 50 years old and sturdy as hell. Â I got awesome service, but like I said, not too many people there. Â I got a huge burrito and some guacamole to add on. Â The food was great, filling and not too spicy. Â Not the best mexican food I have had but nothing to sneer at either.
Review Source:This is the best Mexican place in Cloverdale. Â That's not saying much but it's still worth something. Â I've found that many Mexican places are too authentic thus too spicy or too Americanized thus very boring taste. Â La Ha (as the locals call it) has a great mix that bring the right amount of taste while still being eatable. Â I drive 30 mins just to go there sometimes if I'm not already in Cloverdale.
The restaurant is clean and friendly. Â Theres a separate bar so get the bar feel or the family restaurant feel.
Fairly standard Tex-Mex fare, but very well done. Â Not too much was open when we arrived in Cloverdale, ready to drive up 128 through the Anderson Valley to get to Mendocino, but pretty hungry after skipping lunch and hitting up a number of wineries on the way.
Well-prepared, and very filling, I had one of the only veggie options on the menu, their vegetable and cheese enchilada. Â And I think I ate it all . . . that's right, the whole enchilada, folks. ;-) Â Washed down with a diet soda to cut through some of the heaviness, it was the perfect satisfying meal after a long day, and got me fueled up to go out to the coast.
I've got a belly full of wine and head full of bad ideas. The best thing for me when that happens and it's "linner" time (after lunch, not really dinner, termed by Tina Tamale) is a carbo load fest of Mexican deliciousness.
It was a lazy Sunday afternoon, we had driven all over the coast tasting reds, whites and bubblies, and my stomach was a-gurgling. What came to my mind again, first thing as I sat down? PORK. I bet you thought I was going to say po-ta-toes...
La Hacienda is your typical family restaurant, with murals of Mexican scenes lining the walls and a gracious staff. There are heavy wooden tables and large, stately chairs with "La Hacienda" carved into their backs. You can never forget where you dine!
I ordered the pork carnitas plate and it came with two large flour tortillas, beans and rice, guac and a heaping pile of delicious, savory and tender meat. J. had a burrito the size of a nerf football.
Since we were about the only people in the restaurant, service was great, heh. We got free chips and salsa that we pretty much ate through in minutes. The meal portions are generous and I had leftovers for two days it felt like. I kept picking and picking to my content and self-satisfaction.
It's nothing amazing, but it is acceptable and filling comfort food at a decent price. Great for lunch or dinner I say, if you're in the area and are craving Mexican. It just feels like honest, down home cookin' that fills you up for the rest of the drive up to Mendocino.
Yes, I am a fan. Â Love the Mexican food that fills you up but you still want more! Â Found this place on yelp and decided to give it a whirl on our way up to Mendocino. Â These are the type of Mexican restaurants that San Francisco needs more of (or needs some of. Â I swear there are none). Â Traditional Mexican cheesy decorations (which I love!). Â Large portions. Â Free chips (which definitely tasted homemade and were very very good). Â And affordable prices- 2 huge meals and bill under $20!
I did the combination of a beef tostada and chicken enchilada. Â The tostada had beans, guac, sour cream and lettuce. Â It was pretty darn good. Â The enchilada probably could have used a tad more sauce but it had a ton of chicken and was very good. Â The combination also came with a side of beans and rice which I couldn't eat because I was stuffed. Â My boyfriend got the HUGE wet burrito. Â I had a bite, also very good.
Also, the service was super quick. Â I swear we were in and out of the place in like 30-45 min. Â As it should be!
If only this place was a tad bit closer to me...
Good tasting, carbo-loaded, cheese covered Mexican chow. Â I've eaten here several times. Come starving and order a regular lunch. Â It's a ton of food. Â OR be sensible and order the "small" combo lunch for $7.49. Â That's just a normal size plate of food with beans and rice.
Filling, satisfying. Â I licked my lunch plate clean yesterday.
Bambi had a a big crunchy chicken taco and a cheesy enchilada with a plain salad but without beans & rice. Â We drank Coca-colas. Â Our total bill was $16.21. Â Amazing!
I was blown away by this place. I'm sure it has something to do with expectations. I expected crappy boring food. On top of that, I had been burned (metaphorically) by terrible overcooked lobster at a faux-Mexican place in Oakland recently - fifteen dollars for six pieces of burned meat on skewers in a soft shell? they were sure lucky I got it to go! - and I broodingly assumed this place would be no better.
Boy, was I wrong. The salsa was medium-spicy and flavorful, with plenty of fruity and salty accents going on and plenty of really tasty corn chips. The service was very friendly, and our food came incredibly quickly, as did the food at a nearby table. It looked like a slow night, with only a few other tables filled, but we still didn't expect hot fresh food to appear in a matter of minutes!
My girlfriend got carnitas which had clearly been slow-cooked in their own (or, okay, maybe another pig's) lard. OH. MY. GOD. So good. I got a delicious fatty piece that kept me eating off her plate for some time. They were just on the verge of being too salty for me, but she thought they were totally perfect and I came around to her point of view with a few more bites.
The rice on the side was nice and tomatoey, clearly made from scratch with attention to detail. I am not a connossieur, but I rarely get to see rice with little separate bits of tomato in it - it always looks like maybe just some tomato sauce was thrown in to flavor it. Not this stuff! Â Nice cheesy beans filled the rest of the plate. It was awesome.
I had just eaten, but I was still tempted agonizingly by the seafood selection. I managed to restrain myself from getting a fifteen-dollar bowl of soup that promised seven different kinds of seafood. I think it would have been incredibly big and good, based on everything else we saw, but I didn't feel prepared to pay almost twenty, after tax and tip, for soup. Next time, though...
Instead, I got out of there for $2.49 for a corn quesadilla. It was perfect for sopping up those cheesy beans. It tasted like it was made with a rich whole-milk mozzarella. When I took my first bite, and many times afterward, huge strings of cheese stretched from my mouth to the rest of the quesadilla. I haven't seen anything like it outside of commercials. At one point, I tried stretching one of the strings as far as I could get it before it broke. But I was the one who broke. I gave up when my arms proved to be too short to beat this thing... and satisfied myself by eating it all.
So good! So satisfying. I want to drive all the freaking way out to Cloverdale just to eat there again.
This is a good example of an honest sit down mexican restaurant that does a few things different to make it interesting.
I had the Pancho Villa taco plate. Â Authentic soft shell corn tortillas with carne asada that was also seem to be sauted or stewed in a verde sauce, with a decent covering of quacamole. Â It was very good.
My wife had the chicken enchiladas with chese. Â These were very big, but also very good.
We had the taquitos for an appy, and they were OK.
I think this place is something of an institution in Cloverdale, and is as good as many places in the mission in SF.
Definitely a good effort. Â I was pleased but not nocked over.
If I'm hankering for Mexican in that area, it would be on the top on my list.
