Starving after a long day at a conference, I pulled up my trusty Yelp app to see the nearby eateries my fellow Yelpers recommended. This spot was three blocks from my hotel, so I headed over there for a quick bite.
The atmosphere is very casual and laid back. Orders are placed at the bar, and seating is on a wooden deck overlooking the bay. The food menu is small, but everything looked delicious. I settled on the "Maui-Wowie Burger", which was a large blackened mahi-mahi fillet served on a toasted onion bun with a side of black pepper and waffle fries. It was served quickly, and it was hot and delicious. I watched the sun go down over the bay as I enjoyed my meal and sipped a tasty cocktail.
Their drinks all looked delicious (I watched the bartender whip up several different drinks as I waited to place my order.) I ended up ordering a Yellow Tail: coconut rum, banana liquor, and pineapple juice, served on the rocks. The bartender was generous with the liquor and while the drink was strong, it was delicious.
Staff were friendly, the vibe was laid back, the food and drinks were amazing, and the music was fun. I highly recommend this place.
This place was pretty lame. The only good things were the blue margarita and the passable view of the bay.
The food service was excruciatingly slow. In fact, one guy asked for a refund for his food order because he had been waiting so long. I contemplated doing the same. However, I hung in there for a while longer. Imagine my disappointment when I found that they had somehow managed to ruin fresh Gulf shrimp. Such a shame.
Great place to relax with a cold beverage, soak up the breeze, and watch the sunset. Only place we went to on our 3 day vacation more then once. The prices are great as well as their bar staff. I would highly recommend it! Oh, and both times we went there they had a small two person acoustic gig. Sometimes the volume of those live gigs can be a bit loud for my taste, but it was perfect.
Review Source:If you're in from out of town, this is a good spot to sink your teeth into some good peel & eat gulf shrimp, and watch the sunset over the bay. Â The chairs are rickety, the drinks are in plastic cups, but that kind of lends itself to the overall charm of this deck style restaurants. Â The burger was just ok... it needed some seasoning. Â Fries are tremendous.
No waitrers.. you have to order at one of the two bars.
Great laid back vibe, lovely breeze, awesome sunsets! Typical bar food so we skipped it, I'm convinced SPI has absolutely no IPA beers so went with the hoppiest they had (Heineken) complete with a coozie, live music each time we visited. Â The house tunes are pretty generic 'free bird' type stuff. Great spot!
Review Source:I wanted to know who BOB was and if I could meet him.
...until I realized it stood for Bar on the Bay. I was a bit disappointed, b/c the cartoon "Bob" looks intriguing and mysterious.
Laguna BOB is our place to view the bay and sunset with some nice live music in the background. Don't expect food to be brilliant or amazing, but it's casual bar food.
Order at the bar, find a PVC-piped seat and enjoy the view. Food comes in plastic trays and drinks in plastic cups - with all the wind, be sure to anchor down your napkins, etc. or you'll soon be littering the ocean.
We've had the fried shrimp, ceviche, Maui (fish) burger, and fries. All were pretty tasty and a little pricey. I'm not a huge fan of gulf shrimp (there's a weird taste/smell to it), but others seem to like it.
Solid beach bar. We didn't try the food, but the drinks were strong, cheap, and served in down homey plastic cups. The best part was the view, which is overlooking the Laguna Madre and a great place to watch the sunset.
My recommendation: come for the sunset and enjoy a couple of powerful drinks too.
Wahoos has been in this space for as long as I can remember... and that's a long damn time. But there was always something lacking -- and I'm not sure what it was. It was rarely crowded, even when next door was pumpin' and it felt a little wilted somehow. Maybe that's why they changed the name -- and I don't know who Bob* is but he's awful popular.
The place was packed on a Saturday night. Folks were sweaty, drinks were sweatier but they've put some mojo back in the place. It's a great spot to watch the sunset, have a beer, apparently have some food and meet some friendly folks, locals and tourists alike.
My bill wasn't outrageous and the bartenders all seemed to know what was up. Since my brother and friends are practically locals, they treated us right with double cocktails and a sly wink. Glad this place has got some life -- cause lord knows we shouldn't be going to Louies.
*BOB stands for bar on the bay. I was making the jokes, as the kids call em.
Same as with the story of the 3 Little Bears - some places on SPI are just too BIG.....some are just too small....BUT....if you look hard enough - you CAN find THE ONE that is 'ju-uuust right!'
For us, the Laguna BOB Bar on the Bay is ju-uuust right!
The Ms. and I came for a Saturday sunset based on the Yelp reviews and we were not disappointed! What we found was;
- Cool open air bar with that laid back island vibe,
- Terrific views for all on the Bay,
- Great people watching and you can watch charters come/go from an adjacent dock,
- Friendly, helpful bartenders at accessible bars (yes, they have 2!!),
- Reasonable drink prices ($5.50 for drinks we tried below),
- Madre Ritas (think of hand made ritas, but with a touch of blue)
- Yellow Fin; 1 part coconut rum, 1 part banana liqueur, 3 parts pineapple juice,
2.) Bobber; 1 part coconut rum, 1 part raspberry liqueur (think Raspberry di Amore Liqueur), 3 parts cranberry juice (this one was our favorite!)
- Music is not too loud, and makes a great conversations possible,
- Patrons actually applaud when the sun goes down - we thought this was a nice touch.
If this sounds like your kind of bar to take in the great outdoors on the island, then spend a few hours at Laguna BOB. For us, this was as good as it gets.
I love bobs (formally known as Wahoos).  Although the name has changed, the staff is still the same, as are the great food and drinks! Best ceviche ever (although haven't had alot) ... More of a pico de gallo with fish than fish with pico, but amazing either way.  The fish isnt too fishy. The turbo piña coladas are the best, nice and sweet but strong!  I am also a fan of the blue margarita's!   Has a good number of  chairs/tables.  As close to the bay as you can get!  Has a dock you can drive up to with your boat if you like!  No dance floor per se, but able to hear music from Louie's. When I think of padre I think of bobs.
Review Source:Memorial day weekend. Friday night. Reading one review, I soldiered on into Bob's thinking at worst it would be plain. Think again. A great place, atmosphere, service, food and drinks. I can't compliment this place enough. Everyone was really friendly and fast service. The bar sits as close to the water as possible without being a boat. The fireworks for the Friday show were right in front of the patio I had drinks and shrimp. The barge was about 150 yards off shore and the show and the view was wonderful yo say the least! I would recommend this place a million times. The prices were excellent as was everything. This says a lot as I live on another tourist heavy island. I love it. RECOMMENDED!
Review Source:Showing up on a Sunday afternoon, after the spring break madness, we weren't sure what the condition of anything on the island would be. After trying to go to a bar next door to grab a few drinks by the lagoon and seeing no one there, we decided to take a chance on Laguna Bob.
It's a small, unassuming patio/ outdoor place that is directly on the water. We just went for a couple of drinks, but they had some food too. Notably they had oysters on the half shell and burgers.
Considering the location and the spring break crowd they likely cater to, I was expecting pretty pricey drinks, but I was delightfully surprised. Beers were $3.50, which is not bad at all.
Another big surprise about BOB was that it was incredibly clean. A place like this you usually expect nasty, grimy bathrooms, sticky tables, etc. But overall it was near meticulous. The bathrooms were incredibly clean, which was a big welcomed surprise.
It is also cool to watch over the water as you can see the sunset perfectly, as well as watch others doing water activities, since many of them are based directly next to BOB.
