I've seen this place rated highly on yelp and had a family member rave about it a few weeks ago. Even though he said it was worth the drive I only made a mental note to stop by if I was in the neighborhood.
Today we had business to attend to in Hodgenville and got there about an hour early so I asked my wife if she'd like a late lunch before the meeting (it was almost exactly 1 pm). She said yes so we found this place.
First impression: the smell. Smells like White Castle's.
Next thought, dang this place is tiny. Seriously between the barstools at the counter and the wall was barely wide enough for my shoulders.
Third, the place was PACKED. Then again maybe it was an illusion due to the cramped quarters. Thinking back I think there was about 10 others in there other than my wife and I. Someone behind the counter asked our order, we gave it.
After a few minutes my wife noticed a lack of a card machine and asked a patron...it's CASH ONLY. Â So I had to run to the bank on the opposite corner to use an ATM.
As it turns out, I didn't have to rush. A full 35+ minutes after the order was made I finally get it....a cheeseburger, a double cheeseburger, and fries. That is it....over a half hour.
So we go out to the car to eat and....totally underwhelming. These fresh burgers were squished. All you get is burger, bun and onion. Think of a white castle but more of the size of a regular McDonald's burger. Personally, I'd rather have either of those over what I got. The fried were store bought (Ore Ida maybe?) that were deep fried. Really tasteless. If you order a soda you get it in a can.
So really, I honestly have no idea what the big hubbub is about. The service was lacking (not bad, more none existent) and the food was just OK (I've had better at backyard cookouts). The wait though was incorrigible.
