Coming back from Leland, stopped by there but the place was already closed.  Thankfully, the owner had a white board sign outside stating where else we could find the pies. Hum. The local grocery down the street stocked them. So, U-turn and go in... picked up a mini peach pie and a full size Balaton cherry pie. Peach is out of season here so the fruit must have been IQF but of very good quality. The crust is OUTSTANDING! I was eager to try the cherry pie since I am used to the Montmorency variety that we all know and love.  The inside of the pie was DARK red and the flavor was wonderful. However, it seemed a little short on actual fruit. Was it made with the dried variety? That would surprise me since they are full-on into cherry season up there. Anyway, I would definitely go in there again if and when we are nearby. I would like to try the other pastries.

We stopped here to get some breakfast pastries on a recommendation from the owner of the cottage we rented.  The chocolate croissants were great as well as the cherry scones.  Unfortunately by 9 am on a busy Saturday they were out of the plain croissants.  You could see the bakers busy in the back.  I would definitely return and take some time to relax at the outdoor tables.

We stopped into this new bakery while on a recent mini-vacation in the Leelanau. The first thing that impressed me as I opened the door was the delicious aroma wafting out from the kitchen...pot pies fresh from the oven! It was hard to pass these by but we had other dining arrangements that day, so instead we bought a pretty coiled loaf of salted wheat bread, a mini pumpkin pie for snacking on later on and a big peanut butter cookie for the doggie. (To be quality-checked by the humans, of course.) We enjoyed all these things, especially the pie; we also appreciated the fact that the bakery uses organic and local ingredients whenever possible and also carries some shelf stock of local products. Nothing foo-foo; just basic baked goods, but made with care and quality ingredients. This area is a really competitive market for bakeries; but we think that Leelanau Pie & Pastry can hold its own, and we'd recommend it whether you're looking for a quick takeout breakfast/lunch, an in-car snack while sightseeing or bread or pie to take home.
