Yay! Morgan Hill has an interesting, alive place to go on the occasional evening! Okay, so the band quality varies, and the kitchen, and thus, the menu, is in flux, but, you know what? That is part of the excitement ... on nights when the band is hopping (try the Dave Schnittman Quartet - playing about once a month!) this place is truly a gem!
Review Source:Great time out to listen to free Jazz and Blues - a change of pace from nights out at the movies or just dinner. Â I would eat elsewhere and hit this Jazz Gem after dinner for wine, deserts ( pretty darn good) and listen to the music- perhaps dance as I have.
Thursday night singer is very good at standards while Fri night guests have been excellent. Â Sat night is the regular band and terrific.
This place is phenomenal and needs to be discovered. Â I had been there when they had that lousy chef who could never get it right and everything was late... felt sory for the cool owners as it was so out of their control. Â But now got rid of that problem and they have a new chef and the food is fantastic, the music is always top notch and the people there are so nice. Â Also the pricing is way lower than the places nearby that charge a fortune for what should be medium priced.... Â Also the wine selection here is first class.... It's about time something cool like this came to Morgan Hill. Â You must give it a try and see for yourself. Â woooohoooo!
Review Source:Of course the owner would say that everything is better now.considering he does not want to pay anybody for anything. He pays inadequate people under the table. Do not understand how he can say everything is better with non experienced people. Considering the people he had with knowledge are  all gone. his delusions of grandeur will close the business soon.  Do not waste your time.
Review Source:First off, it sounds like a disgruntled ex-employee from "Tony D's" reviews. Second, please don't go on Yelp when you're drunk and misspell every other word!
This place is amazing! We love the food, music and the wine selection that was brought to us. The service is always friendly....maybe a little slow but I don't want to be rushed out when I'm trying to enjoy some good jazz! Â A fun place to hang out in a sleepy, little town. I say kudos to you Susan and Mark!
PLEASE BE ADVISED that the reviews from "Tony D" and "J.J." are from the old chef that we let go, Chris Rich. Since he has left, the food has been consistent and EXCELLENT. We no longer have to wait for dinner to be served. Give us a try. The music is the best anywhere and the food is top notch. Places like this need your support.
Thank You!
Mark Gaetano, owner. and Pianist.
Upstairs Jazz Cafe is a diamond in the rough but a welcome one at that. I've been there about 6 times since they switched their format from "fine French dining" to more bistro style food with live jazz  a few months ago.  The live music has ranged from truly excellent "Yoshi's" quality to nice "lounge" sort of stuff.  Another nice thing is that they stay open reasonably late, like till 11pm.  So, you can catch a movie and still head out for dinner/dessert and some live music.  The prices are very reasonable and there has never been a drink minimum or ticket fee for live music.  The food has been generally good to very good but it seems that they are still searching for their identity as they've been through a couple of different chefs and menus in the few months that I've been aware of them.  The owners, Mark and Susan, are very nice, perhaps a little too nice as it seems like their wait staff could use a bit more direction and perhaps leadership.  In any case it is obvious that their hearts  are in the right place here and I'm really rooting for Upstairs Jazz Cafe to make it since we basically have little or no quality live music in Morgan Hill and even less quality jazz.  Good Luck!  Give them a chance!
Review Source:This place has a really comfortable feel to it. You walk in and feel like you have been coming there forever! Everyone is friendly! The food was really good. Top of list the Tempra beans. The shrimp and calamari was also excellent! I loved the whole experience . Our waitress was Amanda! Very friendly and made sure we had all we needed !
Review Source:We had a chance to go to the Jazz Cafe on a Saturday night around 9pm, after catching a movie. We ordered dinner and the food was great. It's honestly some of the best food I've tasted in Morgan Hill!! The staff was really friendly and personable. I loved the local wine list and the jazz was awesome. Â I really hope this establishment gets the attention it deserves and becomes a staple of Morgan Hill. It's so nice to have a fun place to go, 'in the neighborhood", that offers great music, food and wine. Love this place and can't wait to go back!
Review Source:Go for the music, avoid the food and sit at the bar
Trying to eat in the main area is a risk as someone is surely to knock into your arm/elbow, the food is quite poor, they are understaffed and visibility of the musicians is limited.
Running down the right hand side is the bar. Sitting at the bar is probably the best choice  as the bar tender will serve you promptly and you can avoid the food.
They would do well to allow patrons to bring their own food and charge a fee for use of plates/utensils. If you wonder how bad can it be, then order the tacos. When it arrives try finding the ahi in it. This is not a restaurant. Even the fried calamari is poor, many broken small bits, more like fried batter pieces than calamari.
To the left of the musician is a small space with three tables. While it is quieter and less jostling, visibility is good only for the first table. The remaining  two tables get to see the backs of patrons in front of them.
Avoid the aggravation of trying to eat at this café, sit at the bar, enjoy a beverage and listen to the music.
Miles Davis. Wes Montgomery. Dave Brubeck. Even Frank Sinatra. Many of Jazz' signature tunes were masterfully performed by the local and newly formed Jazz Trio this past Saturday night in Downtown Morgan Hills's Liliane's Upstairs Jazz Café.
In the land of mushrooms, garlic and hay bales, one typically does not associate jazz with this region of the Bay Area. Displaying a touch of coolness, a quintessential ingredient for any jazz venue, the Upstairs Jazz Café feels and looks like a live music club. Its colorful room is dim despite the pendant lights hanging from the ceiling. Although its tables may seem close to one another when comparing it to a typical run-of-the-mill restaurant, for a traditional jazz venue (like Yoshi's), there's plenty of space to move about.  And, there is no cover charge.
As for food, aside from a hamburger, tapas are the dominant choices. From sliders to artichoke dip with pita, there are plenty of options for carnivores and herbivores alike. The wine selection is modest, but suffice.
The best part about this venue, though, is, of course, the music. To have the ability to witness virtuoso musicians in this type of setting is a treat and one that should be taken advantage of by South County residents who love jazz or, simply, want to have a romantic night out.
Rather than go to the same old restaurant, try something different.  Go to the Liliane's  Upstairs Jazz Café. You will not be disappointed.
Finally went this past Friday to listen to a friend of mine sing. Parking is a little hard for the time we went (7pm), but we got a space and went inside. The pictures on their website show that it is a small space, but once inside you really feel it. I already knew ahead of time that it was going to be packed, and that making a reservation would help, so we were seated pretty fast. But once seated our server didn't show for a few minutes, and without menus. Eventually we ordered our wine and food, then enjoyed our friends singing while we waited. We waited for quite awhile as I believe staff was limited and those that were working were all over the room trying to keep up with amount of people/orders.
Finally when our came mine was missing salmon (I ordered a wedge salad with salmon), so the server took it back and I waited an additional 10 minutes. When it was brought it was as I ordered and tasted good.
The rest of the night passed fine, danced and had a good time. Overall, I think for the volume of people that attended, maybe they need a bigger place or lower the "max occupancy." Of course it could be a testimony to the singer and his loyal followers :) ... but still, some improvements could be made.
I am going to give a 4 star because the food and the sauces were amazing and the music was great . This place a nice place to go . My only issues were the service was so slow it took 2 hours for food ...but when you get it so worth it ...Just dont be hungry or in a hurry and you will really enjoy this ...
Review Source:My husband and I came here on a double date a few weekends ago for their Sunday brunch and it was delicious! They had a good selection of food including some vegetarian options. At 15$ a pop it is a good price because they include bottomless mimosas and where else can you go for brunch where they have LIVE music? They were very attentive as well. Morgan Hill needs more places like this!
Review Source:Noisy and food so-so. Had dinner there last night. The website says this is a French restaurant, but it's now a jazz cafe. Â So, we started off on the wrong foot...get your website updated!! Â The staff had trouble figuring out which table was ours. They eventually sat us near the bar - which would have been fine except for the band that came in to play had a huge entourage and they seated themselves in the aisle next to our table. They were loud and after the server almost spilled our appetizer on us due to squeezing by the crowd, we moved over and it was a little quieter. Â Then the band started. Â It was so loud we couldn't chat through dinner - which was the point for us....the meal was so-so. Â Had linguine/shrimp. Â The shrimp was overdone and the linguine was more al-dente than my preference (a little crunchy!!). Â His salmon was yummy but a little salty. Â They did comp two glasses of wine, which was very generous.
Review Source:Went last night and had a wonderful evening. Â Good food. Good wine. Great music. Â The owner plays jazz piano and the band was jumpin'. Â I'd suggest reservations as every table was full. Â The ladies liked the small dishes and ended up sharing a little of everything. Â Will be back!
Review Source:Took a trip up to Morgan Hill to see a friend play some blues guitar. we were seating almost immediately, but reservations are very recommended. I thought the service was rather slow, not sure, but I think I might have added to the confusion.
The Atmosphere was bright, but small, bordering on noisy but you could still here your table talk-across (even over the music).
The food was EXCELLENT! I had the most tender Short Ribs I have ever had in my life over a bed of nicely flavored mashed potatoes and a side of vegetables (also very tasty). My wife had the Crab/Tuna item and she was equally satisfied.
Consider the Spinach Dip appetizer and enjoy your dinner, it well well worth the price.
One of the worst restaurant experiences I have had in my lifetime. The service was horrible and the owner was more interested in playing piano than getting people served. Â Chicken was raw . Our entire party had been done eating for at least 10 minutes when the final person was served. I will never go back and I will tell anyone I know in town to never go. What a disappointment.
