LIONLIKE MINDSTATE IS ALIVE AND THRIVING!! It moved into Downtown Pomona Arts Colony off of Mission and Park. There is always a great energy and good people. Also, the new location is an art gallery/boutique so not only can you be a part of creating art you can purchase it as well!! (Just got some fly custom earrings last week for just $5).
Oh! Did I mention they have their own cupcake caterer who always brings new flavors of FREE CUPCAKES to sample. It really is one of my favorite poetry venues in the Inland Empire.
When I stumbled on this place a little over two years ago, I was in shock. I had grown up in the Inland Empire and didn't think a place that promoted music, arts, and poetry could exist.
Since then, I've come to call this place my home poetry spot. 1st and 3rd Wednesday from 9-11pm, poets from all across the I.E. come to jump on the mic and spit their words. I've been to many spoken word places, and often don't go back. But the reasons why I keep going back to LionLike is because a) the poets are really good and unpretentious, 2) it's not at a coffee shop so there is no pressure to buy food 3) the space (and the community) is inviting to all to feel like they are at home and 4) even amateur/first time/reading off paper poets are encouraged to jump on the mic.
If you live far - I would totally encourage you to make the drive. It is worth it. This spot is better than any Los Angeles poetry spot - and if you wanna see how community driven poetry is done, come on out to the I.E.
