Come on people - it's Utopia TX! I've been here a handful of times when I come to visit my best friends and I think it's fun to come eat here as an alternative to eating in every night - no offense to my girlfriend who's always cooking for us!
This last time I tried the Chicken Fingers and Fries (w/cheese, ask for cheese!) and WOW I thought it was so good! Not healthy but home-breaded and just delicious. It's a small town with one gas station and one stop sign - don't be so harsh, it's the local eating hole!
I thought the food was great! Â I got the chicken fried steak with baked potato. Â The potatoes only come with butter. Â You have to pay extra for cheese and sour cream. Â They don't have bacon bits. Â The chicken friend steak was perfect! Â You get equal amount of steak as you do crust. Â I hate it when you orderchicken fried steak and it is mostly crust and not enough meat.
The pie was incredible. Â I got the fudge pecan pie with ice cream. Â They aren't stingy with the ice cream either. Â They put a big scoop on the pie.
The service wasn't all that great. Â We did have to hunt down our server a few times for refills, to order pie, and to get the check. Â If we are in the area again, we will probably stop back by.
We've been here twice, with bad experiences both times. Servers rude and unpleasant. Rolled their eyes and were clearly not happy to be there. We ordered food, then two groups walked in. The two groups that arrived before us ordered, ate, paid, and left before we even received our food. When we asked about the status we got a snippy response. When the server brought the food, her fingers were touching it (yuck), there was also a live bug crawling on the food. All while we were waiting the waitress could be seen drinking and visiting with other people. When the food arrived, it was mediocre at best. Will not be returning to this place again.
Review Source:We went in here a month ago for pie on our way to Garner. It was my first time.
My brother absolutely loves the pie at this place. He will always go back.
However, me and the other 2 people I was with weren't so impressed. I have never met a coconut cream pie that I didn't love, but the slice I had here was just okay.
The customer service was bad. They had a little girl take our orders and serve us, she couldn't have been older than 9 years old! I don't wanna be too harsh on critiquing a child, but I have to be honest for the sake of the review. She was rude and had an annoyed look on her face the whole time. Never smiled. The place was busy and they were obviously over working her. When she brought us our pie, she slammed the plates down on the table and walked away. Bless her heart, she was probably exhausted. I don't hold her behavior against her. I do hold it against who ever is in charge of this place and had an elementary age child working as a waitress, and obviously didn't take the time to explain to her that it's good to be friendly to the customers.
I won't be going back unless my brother is with me and insists on stopping here.
I don't understand negative feedback on service or friendliness...my husband and I ate here twice during a 3-day stay in Utopia, and we felt as "local" as anyone in the room. Â It's obvious, though, that everyone here works very hard early am to late pm and is doing their best possible to juggle multiple customers in a busy place. Â But we never felt slighted. Â The waitresses each day even took time to joke with my husband and one short cutie "warned" we would laugh at her reaching to a high shelf for takeout containers...so I offered to get one down and was tickled she felt at ease enough to let me help - just as if it were MY place, too! Â Portions are very generous and comfort food isn't typically "light" fare, but everything we sampled was tasty and hot and scratch-breaded/cooked. Â Fish, burgers, CFS, baked potato, taco salad, fresh salsa, and PIE! Â I marveled at how quickly the cook called out "Order!" after a new ticket went to the window. Â And even the dishwasher pinch-hits to answer the phone, restock supplies, etc while on "break." Â Nice folks, and we were so happy to be their guests!
TIP: Enjoy your hot meal on premises and get your pie to go! Â Or, stop here for pie & coffee even if you dined elsewhere.
Driving through Utopia without phone service led to our lunch spot being picked at random. Â The food here was typical burgers, sandwiches, and chicken fried steak. Â A daily special of pot roast was delicious served with new potatoes and greens. Â The service was very odd, and caters more towards the locals. Â A guy from the area came in, ordered the special, finished it, and had ordered another special before I even got my food. Â I had to beg for a tea refill, and was told by my waitress that "eventually someone will come around with tea." Â Too bad, because the food was good, but don't expect service unless you live in the area.
Review Source:Lost Maples Cafe was probably the best and liveliest restaurant in the surrounding 20-mile radius. Â It was at least half-full on a Sunday morning. Â We took a big group of around 25 people and they served us fairly quickly. Â
I deducted two stars because the waitress handed us our water glasses by holding onto the rim where we put our mouths. Â Another star was deducted for the waitress handing us someone's order and calling it by the wrong name so that the wrong person received it. Â When we found out, she didn't apologize or even look contrite for her error. Â Another star was deducted for her lack of friendliness and warmth. Â Her job was merely to take our orders and bring the food out. Â However, because they got food to our large group so quickly, they deserved an extra star.
Lost Maples Cafe is a cute wooden, two-story building. Â There is a bench outside and lots of cute, old-timey decorations to look at. Â The other buildings around it looked deserted. Â
The breakfast menu is from 7 - 11 am. Â There are no substitutions. Â They also sell some homemade pastries on the counter. Â The pastries are overpriced but the breakfast items ranged from $5-9.
As for the taste of the food, my vegetarian omelet tasted fine and the hashbrown was delicious. Â However, the meal was greasy and heavy. Â It sat in my stomach the whole day and didn't get digested quickly enough. Â The waitress also brought out this salsa-like condiment in a white bowl that was delicious.
I liked the interior decorations. Â They had a wide variety of nostalgic items and animal heads mounted to the walls.
I would not dine here again.
Wish I would have read the other two review before going to this cafe. I agree that the place has a lot of character, and everyone seems to know each other at this small town place.
The food is not bad but not good either. Our server was friendly, but the rest of the staff seemed not too thrilled to have out of town city slickers.
Hayden's review here is spot-on. Really terrible food for what purports to be a small-town cafe -- apparently someone sold them on the wonders of prepackaged frozen food, so stick to the basics. Even then, you may be burned (see: cole slaw). Â But the pie (apparently made off premises) is wonderful!
If you're staying in the area, this will be your only choice to eat out -- stick to the basics, and don't order hash browns at breakfast.
This place is full of character and small town cafe feel, but the food is pretty terrible. Stick to the most basic things and you'll escape with a decent meal: Burger, Chicken Fried Steak, Corndog, ect. The saving grace of Lost Maples is the AMAZING HOMEMADE PIE! I get an entire Butter Milk pie to go every time (unless they are sold out which is often). My suggestion, get some pie and get out.
