My husband and I arrived in The Dalles this past Friday for a weekend stay. Being new to the area, I searched online for local wineries and Maison de Glace popped up with a story of the building; its transformation from an old ice house to an up-and-coming winery. I love historic buildings and had to visit. I am so glad we did. We had the pleasure of meeting Aaron and Kelley Lee, the proud proprietors. Standing at a modern cement-poured bar, we tasted a unique dessert white wine, Roussane, and several reds. Surrounded by nostalgic signs on the wall and a window view of the town, it's a relaxed and comfortable experience.
For those that don't enjoy wine, they serve beer. For those that want a Saturday evening out on the town, they offer live music. For those that just want to drink some craveable Merlot, Zinfandel and Syrah -- plus a blend known as Block No. 1 (yum!) -- please do not leave The Dalles without a visit. We cannot wait for a return visit.
This small winery was a pleasant surprise to us. Â Tucked off one of the main roads in town, Maison de Glace is a small tasting room with several good red wines to sample. Â (I only sampled one white wine due to personal preference for reds.) We were also surprised to find some good beer here, too, which made our visit even nicer. Â If you are headed out on a wine tour be sure to stop here to sample a few of their wines. I'm giving it a 3.5 based on size, number of tasting room options & price.
