Had to have some Alabama BBQ while here.
The Pork plate was very good. Â The sides were OK but not wonderful. Â The pork had just the right amount of smoke but could have been more moist. Â The plates came with a huge piece of TX Toast with some kind of buttery spread all over it. Â This was not necessary. Â
I would eat here again but I would try something different. Not because what I had was bad but just to try something different.
Would go back.
It's always great to find a quality meal off of the interstate. Marie's is one of those mark-it-on-the-map (or GPS) places, off of I-20 (exit 199) between Atlanta and Birmingham. The pork BBQ is excellent and very smoky, with a nice tangy sauce drizzled on the top of the plate. Fried green tomatoes are cooked slightly dark brown, more like what you'd expect in your aunt's kitchen than in a restaurant (and I say that as the highest of compliments). Fried okra are obviously fresh and not frozen. Really, the only thing that didn't seem fresh was the fries, which are your standard crinkle cut. And definitely try the Brunswick stew -- it is among the best I've ever tasted, sweet and savory. Quick service, great food, friendly folks, great bang for your buck. This sure beats the mess out of eating chain food on the road.
