Went in fairly late with my husband and was seated with a menu.  We ordered beers first (turned out to be some pretty disgusting local blends, I say as a West Virginian) and as we were perusing the menu, the waitress came back and told us the kitchen had been closed for a while.

Why did you sit us with a menu then?!

Since we'd come for food, we left.  No atmosphere to stay for, though the interior was gorgeous.

Stopped in here on a Tuesday night after discovering that the Lost Parrot was closed down.. sad day... however McBee's is very cute and enjoyable. You can never go wrong with an Irish Pub to begin with.. The Bartender was such a sweetheart who made delicious drinks! They have live music there a few days out of the week, and serve food as well. Win. Win. Win. If I am ever in the neck of the woods again I will definitely return!

This is a clean, nicely decorated (for a pub) restaurant.  The staff was friendly but a bit harried (Friday night rush).  The beer selection included two imports and two local brews along with the usual suspects.  I had the  Mountain State Miner's Daughter Oatmeal Stout.  It was a good beer, not great, but still a good stout.  We both ordered the fish and chips.  This is why I rated it 3 stars.  When you call yourself an Irish Pub you have to have good fish and chips.  They were on the bland side and a bit fishy.   We had to ask for lemon slices and I had to chase down the malted vinegar.  If I were in town and close by I would go back.

Not that I've spent much time in Beckley, but WOW, a diamond in the rough (no offense to the locals). What a great place. My family and I rolled in the Saturday before Christmas after a solid 12 hours in the car travelling north.  A decent band, good food, good drinks, and an attentive staff made this a truly enjoyable visit. We took the previous writers' advice on food. When in Rome...
We'll definitely make another visit if we're passing by.

Just like Bob L.- we were in WVA- on a White water Rafting vaycay, and really wanted to try something local. We are allergic to all the big chains. and will always choose some local flavor so after driving around for ages- finally found something ( on Yelp) that looked cool...... Siri directed us into the historic part of Beckely, and there- right next to a huge hole in the ground, was McBees'. Kinda interesting trying to get in.... entrance not clear, and a bit of a mess due to construction- we finally made it in- and all the way down into the cellar to a surprisingly open, and warm restaurant w/ a garden level entrance that let in light on the back side.  We ordered all the Irish staples- Twice stuffed potatoes,  Irish stew, Shepards pie, Corned beef and cabbage piled high........... amazing. Really, really good. We also ordered the Lump crab cake platter- definitely stick to the Irish food.... crab cakes were just meh- a little fishy, better left to other places.  It was also open mike night- so we had live music! Pretty good tunes during dinner. We lingered for a while after dinner digging the singers- til the last guy convinced us it was time to go .  Very nice experience all around- even  that last sour note on open mike......;)

We were in West Virginia looking forward to some whitewater rafting and ziplining at Adventures on the Gorge and the night before were looking for a place to eat. One thing I hate when travelling is to settle for chain restaurants. Sure, there's an Applebee's right next to the hotel, but c'mon. I always try to get something local and unique. When in doubt, look for an Irish pub.

McBee's Irish Pub is located in the historic old downtown of Beckley, WV. It's clear that there's a lot of work going on in the area with old buildings being repurposed and new businesses moving in to fill the voids. Located downstairs, McBee's is exactly what you'd expect when it comes to an Irish pub. There's plenty of dark wood, a nice long front bar and an attention to detail that I appreciated. The main dining area is bordered by a large back area with brick flooring, a long iron bench and a street lamp. It works. There's also a back patio but I didn't venture outside.

The beer list at McBee's was a pleasant surprise. There were 15 taps to choose from with a good mix of craft beers and the usual suspects (of course there was Guinness and Smithwicks). I opted to sample two beers from a local craft brewery, Mountain State Brewing Company of Thomas, WV. The Almost Heaven amber was a fantastically malty and well-balanced amber ale. A great session brew. Next was the Miner's Daughter outmeal stout. This was a great example of the style, pitch black, roasty-smooth, creamy and thick on the palate. This was my first time with Mountain State beers and I'm happy to report they were great.

The menu is eclectic. It contains the usual bar suspects like wings and burgers as well as some traditional Irish fare like bangers and mash and fish and chips. Here's the rundown of our dinner experience:

The house rolls - Who doesn't love fresh, warm rolls with butter? Tasted a bit like sourdough. Crispy on the outside with warm, doughy middles. Yum.

Summer salad with salmon - a fresh mix of salad greens, red cabbage, cucumbers, tomatoes, and apples topped with grilled salmon and dressed with a slightly sweet and fruity vinaigrette. The salmon was cooked perfectly (through, like we like it) and well-seasoned. I'm not a salmon guy, but even I thought it was pretty damn tasty.

Fish and chips - When in an Irish pub...a nice big piece of whitefish battered and fried a perfect golden brown. It's rare that a place has fish and chips that remind me of the ones I had when I was in the UK. McBee's did just that. Crispy, not greasy batter and fries with a moist tender fish. The slaw and tartar sauce were great compliments and our server remembered the malt vinegar. Points for that.

We were pleasantly surprised with our visit to McBee's,especially since there were no Yelps yet and, being a relatively new joint, there's very little to go on. Sure, the place was practically empty during our visit, but I'd like to think that didn't matter. Our server was great, friendly with just the right amount of attention, the space was warm and comfortable, and the food hit all the right spots. If we're ever back in the area we wouldn't hesitate to pay them another visit. Keep up the good work, guys.
