This place has been open for a few years and the fact that there isn't a review amazes me!
I have to rate Michelangelo's as the best thin crust pizza in southern Illinois, easily. I usually get the sausage and pepperoni pizza. The crust is thin and amazing tasting. If I were to equate it to any Chicago-style crust, I would say it is very similar to Barnaby's. As for the sauce, it is very rich, thick and tasty as well...traditional Chicago-style thin crust sauce. You can tell that they actually put some effort into making the sauce, as it doesn't taste like just a can of tomato sauce with no flavor. Also, the pizza is not greasy at all, as the crust staying nice, crisp and firm attests to that fact.
As for the toppings, the quality is great. Also, the cheese is great! So if you only eat cheese pizza, this place nails it! The only issue that I have is that they sometimes are a little light on the sausage. Therefore, I have to ask for extra sausage. But considering the price of the pizza and the size you get for that price, it is easily a great deal even if you have to double up on sausage.
For you pizza aficionados, like myself, you might want to ask for it cut in squares, as they cut it pie-style. Still, the owners are extremely nice and go out of their way to help you. They are more than happy to cut the pizza in squares.
I highly recommend Michelangelo's! If you are driving up or down I-57 and looking for a place for dinner, this is where to go. The only issue that I have is that they are closed on Sunday and for lunch. Personally, I would stay open on Sunday, especially during football season. Imagine the money they could make on Super Bowl Sunday...my little hint to them ;) Still, it is worth the wait until they open at 4 PM to have southern Illinois' best thin crust pizza!
