Been coming here for a long time with the family. Service is usually good, never really had a terrible experience. I like the fact they have ribs. The house margaritas are not that bad, but usually I get one of the specialty margs because the house mix is too sweet for me. The chips and salsa are in my top five favorites.
Review Source:I have been to the Minturn Saloon several times, and each time is better than the last. The staff is incredibly helpful, friendly, and willing to do whatever it takes to insure a wonderful meal. I highly recommend the man platter, Â which contains duck, quail, and ribs with an unbelievable jam. By far one of the top restaurants in the Vail valley.
Review Source:the waitress said they specialize in ribs and Quail-I thought..."that's an interesting combination" and went with the ribs with a margarita while my wife went for the Mexican samplings. Â I wish I would have gone Mexican as the ribs weren't great and we had literally driven here just to eat at this place. Â the ribs were nothing great and the margarita was very strong-overall I would definitely come back a couple times to check it out, as it was a very cool atmosphere with a deck outside that I bet rocks in the Summertime-and who knows...maybe it was a bad ribs day-I'll be back to confirm
Review Source:What makes this place good is the atmosphere and the chips and gaucamole. Beyond that the food is okay and the service is okay. Â This place is more about coming to meet friends, a place for having a few drinks and maybe, when your palate is destroyed a bit, eating something.
Now given I did not eat any of the things that the waiter recommended...quail, ribs or duck, but I did have the arroz con pollo and it was uhhhhhhh interesting? Â Not exactly what I am used to, but okay. Â I made a meal out of it anyway. Â My son was funny too, when he got the kids nacho's he looked at it and said "It just looks like a bag of chips, where's the cheese?"
I think I may take the $80.00 we paid for dinner somewhere else next time.
Hey look, this is a classic place here in valley. Â I don't know exactly how many years it has been here but probably since Vail was initially built. Â If you want fine dining and/or high end service then stay in Vail or Beaver!
Good but not great food with a predominate Mexican bend. Â The bar is great with literally a million stories to be told about the bar and in the bar. Â Always great for apre ski and telling all those wonderful lies about what a great run you had into some back country bowl where you where actually horrified. Â Great place to meet and get a ride home if you exit Vail by doing the "Minturn Mile", it drops you out sort of behind the place and on the other side of the rail road tracks.
Drinks are solid but can get pricey if you want the up scale Margaretta's for instance.
Easy to get to from either Vail of Beaver. Â Kid friendly but bring them early the bar can get a little crazy at times. Â Compared to other places in around the Vail valley this place is relatively cheap.
Recommend and will return.
If you're into divey dive bars, this is the place for you. My friends and I arrived before the place opened (what can I say, we were thirsty!) and the bartender welcomed us in for drinks. The drinks were cheap and strong, and even more enjoyable in front of the raging fireplace. I imagine there is a pretty good crowd for the live music on Friday nights - unfortunately I wasn't able to make it back to see for myself. Next time!
Review Source:As you enter the warmth and cozy atmosphere of this place, you are greeted by all the memorabilia of this famous and historic establishment. Â Whether you are there to enjoy the bar and have drinks by the fire or if you are there to dine the Saloon is the place to be if you are visiting or live in the Vail valley. Â
The menu consists of delicious tex-mex food with some specialty items, like quail, duck and ribs etc. Â I would say its priced fairly for the area and the portions are on the bigger side. Â
The essence of Colorado and ski lifestyle is present here, the welcoming staff always makes you feel right at home. I highly recommend this place.
I suspect the folks who express outrage for the Saloon are the same types who are looking for the back nine over at the Minturn Country Club. The assumptions and expectations are really funny.
While it's true my shirt was sticking to the back of the booth thanks to ... I don't want to know what, the fish tacos I had here were pretty good. Chips and salsa were fine; they looked like chips and salsa you could get pretty much anywhere. For dessert, the fried ice cream was rather tasty. There's some sort of fried pastry thing on the bottom of the scoop; it made for a nice vessel to sop up the melted yumminess.
Beer was cold, memorabilia on the walls plentiful and interesting, and wait staff both friendly and prompt with refills and followup.
If you come here fresh from a trip to Vail's finest, you'll be in for a let-down. Know that going in, and you'll probably have a decent meal both in taste and price.
Awful, awful, awful.. Did I mention this place is awful?
Everything on this menu is either canned or microwaved. Our nachos looked like an alien gave birth to them they had been life in the microwave so long. Underneath the shield of cheese was a pool of oil. It was disgusting with not a bean to be found.
The salsa they serve is Pace picante sauce, processed and canned. My duck fajitas were hardly Mexican- they came pre cut on a plate, over cooked, and smothered in some kind of sweet sauce. It tasted like old liver, it honestly didn't taste like duck at all. It was mystery meat. The rice wasn't cooked all the way through and the burritos are just open faced tortillas smothered with Pace picante and microwaved cheese. It was soggy in a pool of water.
Minturn Saloon takes the gold metal for the worst Mexican food EVER.
These people should be ashamed of serving this food to people and charging as much as they do. We paid 260.00 for 6 people and one only ate nachos and the other was a vegetarian.
Absolutely repulsive. This is not a restaurant.
I was really excited to try this place when visiting a friend in town, but was overall not too impressed. Â The service was great, and it was very nice to sit outside on their patio. Â However, the food seemed very overpriced ($8 for a small cup of guac?!). Â I recommend coming here to enjoy a few drinks and an app, but wouldn't stay for a full meal.
Review Source:They seem to specialize in margaritas. They have a 6 page menu, 2 of which are devoted to margaritas. Â And if you like margaritas made with miniscule amounts of tequilla plus lots of sweet & sour instead of decent quanties of tequilla, triple sec (or Cointreau) and fresh lime juice, then you should go. Â you can order by the glass, 1/2 liter, 1 liter plus. Â They do serve several good beers.
The food is decent, but not spectacular. Â The prices start at $16.95 for basic mexican but then go way up for things like quail, shrimp, etc. Â all the way up to $36 for a duck entre. Â Duck? Â In a Mexican saloon? Â They do have a children's menu section and the place was full of kids.
The inside dining room is part of an historic saloon. Â We elected to sit on the patio (note, no smoking outside) Â which started out very nice. It's mid June in the Rockies and the evening was perfect. Â We didn't notice the two bean bag game boards next to our table until after our drinks and chips arrived and there were no other tables to move to. Â We noticed the bean bag game when pretty much every kid in the place, and I did mention the place was full of kids, came over to play/toss bean bags back and forth. Â They all had a great time and it was good family fun, I just sort of wanted to enjoy the evening without having a bean bag whiz by every 5 seconds.
If you're from Texas and enjoy all the various kinds of Mexican and/or Tex-Mex, don't expect too much here. Â The chips were good, but the salsa is about as bland as you can get. Â Tomato chunchs with onion and some cilantro. Â That's it. Â No jalepenos. Â But they do offer the "#10 Salsa" and I suggest you ask for it. Â It's some ground up chipolte peppers that you can add to the otherwise bland tomato based salsa to spice it up some.
The enchiladas are pretty good. Â I had the pulled pork enchiladas and my wife got the chicken, but we had to pay $2 extra for white meat chicken. Â They have 2 sauces to choose from; a white sauce with jalepenos, which is quite good, and a red sauce, which is also good but not spicy.
The beans are a mixture of "sort of" refried pinto beans mixed with whole black beans with adequate amounts of melted cheese on top. Â The rice is par-boiled with some tomatoe sauce and onions mixed in to mimic spanish rice.
The service is very friendly and prompt primarlity because the various waitstaff seemed to help each other when the others were busy. Â It did take quite a while to get our check, which is frustrating because all the other service was good.
I think the Minturn Saloon might suffer just a tad in this review because it has such a great reputation. I was explaining to my boyfriend (who is from out of town) that pretty much everyone has heard of Minturn Saloon, and that it's supposed to have great Mexican food. To be fair, it has pretty decent Mexican food FOR THE MOUNTAINS. It's just not very authentic, or seasoned as I have come to expect Mexican food to be seasoned... you know, spicy and maybe with some cumin, etc. I mean, if you plopped this place in Kansas, those people would go wild. But this is Colorado! We have strong expectations! I had a vegetarian burrito the first night we went, which was good and flavorful, just not amazing. Especially for $14. A few days later, we went back and I had the fajitas, which were much better. The beef was really tender and, perhaps for the first time in the history of fajitas, not ridiculously overcooked. The chicken was a little overcooked, Â though. The guacamole was really good, and of course, the margaritas were amazing. All in all, a place I would happily visit when I am in the mountains- definitely for drinks, maybe for Mexican food after a few drinks. But other than that, I will scratch my Mexican food itch here in Denver.
Review Source:The Minturn Saloon should be a required stop for anyone visiting the Vail, CO area. Not only will it feel like you're stepping back in time - I truly imagined miners sidling up to the bar and getting their drink on - but the service is great and the food is excellent with generous portions. I highly recommend the Mixed Grill (quail, rib & duck meat all on one plate - the duck was to die for). And don't forget the fried ice cream for dessert - truly amazing.
And a special shout out to our server, Dana, who kept the banter light and fun and kept our party laughing the whole night. Try and request her section when you go - she was a riot.
We heard that the Minturn Saloon had good food and great atmosphere. I agree that the Saloon is cool to look at and read about. The service was great and the waiter was very nice. The salsa was okay, but was even better with their special hot sauce. I had an enchilada and the chicken was not seasoned well at all.  It was much better with the white cheese sauce.  The rice was swimming in a pool of liquid and  it was tasteless. The Saloon also had a funny smell to it, but I got used to it after a while. I guess it's because it is so old. It was really expensive for Mexican food. We were not charged for an extra plate, but the menu stated that you would be charged if you shared. The portions were HUGE! Which is great, but it forces you to share or take home leftovers.
Review Source:We went to Minturn Saloon based off of Yelp reviews and I have to say it is the only time Yelp has let us down. It was our last night of a very lovely vacation.
We sat outside on their very nice patio and overlooked the beauty of that area. That was pretty much the end of the niceties. The waiter was fine, he was earnest and it's not his fault the food was terrible.
I can't say for sure but the salsa shared an uncanny resemblance to Pace Picante sauce. The guacomole wasn't seasoned at all.
We got the fajitas and they were horrible. They were in a pool of liquid and not hot at all. We each had one tortilla worth then left. I had the steak and it was not cooked right and old. He had the chicken and it was dry and tasteless.
Both of us were sick to our stomachs through to the next day. It robbed us of a pleasant evening at the hot tub and we didn't appreciate it.
The kicker of it was the bill came to $60. We have a Mexican restaurant in Memphis that is to die for and it's 1/4 the cost. It was the only sour point of several days of tasty dining.
Great place to stop by and have a drink or two. But get your food somewhere else.
I've been here a few years ago and remembered the food, especially the quail, being very good.
On our recent camping trip, we came to the Saloon on Saturday evening for dinner. Our waitress was very sweet and deserves an A+ for making the food sound very yummy.
We ordered the fish taco special (20 bucks), enchiladas and the steak and quail (33 bucks).
The steak was the only thing that was ok. Just ok. Everything else was below average and absolutely not worth the $$$$. All plates came with a side of very tasteless rice and bland beans. The fish tacos had way too much shredded lettuce and came in a large flour tortilla instead of corn tortilla. Although they used Cajun seasoning on the fish, it was very boring, especially for 20 dollars.
The quail was another disappointment. Not the delicious, crispy skinned quail i remembered.
Overall, I wouldn't come back to eat here. Just for a few drinks at the bar.
I always reccomend a night at Minturn to the Vail visitors A nice escape from the over-priced foody spots in the immediate ski area.
You'll have to drive since busses dont go there so be sure to tap a DD. Â The margaritas are strong and they keep them flowing. Â The food is western mexican including some pig specials. Â
Enjoy!
What a great find this place was a true Colorado small town saloon. We wandered in after a long day of hiking and driving in the summer. The bartender couldn't have been nicer...the beer selection was fantastic as was the food which has a Mexican skew.
A great local spot...It would be my local if I lived in Minturn...
I really love this place. Â It just has that great Colorado Saloon feel. Â I could spend many a night here boozing it up if I lived in Minturn. Â It's a must see if you're in the Vail area or want to take a quick stop for lunch/dinner off of I-70. Â
The food here has a focus on Mexican and despite what may seem counter intuitive to the Colorado tourist, the state has great Mexican food. Â
The Saloon has a ton of tequilas to choose from and they make a good margarita. Â The service has been above par all times I've been there, with a friendly staff that engages you personally in some way.
Tip: Order the quail & enchilada platter. Â Both the quail & the enchiladas are delicious and it's just so odd that they're paired together. Â For $17 it's a ton of food.
My family and friends enjoyed a great meal at the saloon. Â They have call ahead reservations which allowed us to be put on the list. Â Once we arrived we had a sort wait before being seated. Â While we waited for our table we enjoyed drinks from the bar and complementary nacho chips and salsa. Â Our waiter was the best. Â He started by telling us to ask him any question. Â He if did not have a answer he would make one up! Â He wanted us to refer to him as dirt and he pointed out that his co-worker was older than dirt. Â Really nice guy who especially catered to my two kids. Â He had plenty of stories to share during his frequent trips to our table. Â The food was great. Â Their specialty is Quail, Ribs, and Duck so we enjoyed the combination platter. Â They also have the standard bar food, i.e. chicken, burgers, etc. done as a Mexican dish. Â Whenever I make it back to Beaver Creek/Vail I would not miss having dinner at the Minturn Saloon. Â This is what you expect a ski bar would look like!
Review Source:At the end of the day, if you still have some energy, you can hike a bit and then back country ski down to the Minturn Saloon. What awaits is a cowboy meets Mexican (is that where the word Tex-Mex comes from?) apres ski. With good margaritas, some decent salsa and huge portions of some fine Mexican food, I can't really say enough about this place.
It does get PACKED, so if you're coming here for dinner, be prepared to wait, which isn't so bad so long as you've got a beer or a margarita in your hand.
Now, if you do choose to ski there yourself, I HIGHLY recommend you have someone else in your party go down the mountain and pick up a car and drive over to Minturn. If you've got no ride home, you're evening might not end on such a happy note. ;)
Howdy Partner!
Step back in time at the Minturn Saloon with it's quirky, homey and crude decor and servers. Crude is not meant to be an insult, rather the decor and servers add to the environment. This place has enough character plus, some. The plank floors, signed movie star pictures on the wall, sun withered, long haired wait staff that have been with the restaurant for for 20+ years, enormous bull horns hanging-yep it's an experience.
Now, the food is Mexican with an offering of thick and tasty barbecue as well- not exceptional, but with pitchers of beer or margaritas to wash it down the caliber goes way up.
Try this place after a long day of skiing as the portions and the atmosphere is huge....bring along a bunch of rowdy friends-this place is not for the quiet or shy-and be ready for a good time. I can almost see the  rounds of tequila now...
Cuervo Tradicional Margaritas, chips with salsa and guacamole, and the best quail this side of the Mississippi. Enough said! I will say it was far quieter than expected...I've been going here for probably 15 years now and have never seen it so dead during peak ski season! Great to not have to wait for a table but the crazy packed scene is part of its charm. The food was still excellent though! Ask for the special hot stuff to spice up the salsa!
