So, this is our second restaurant in Monon that we've tried, and it was unexpectedly better than I thought it would be, but then, I really wasn't expecting much. Â The restaurant is clean and had lots of seating configurations. Â Like all small towns, the tables and chairs are very, very basic with plastic table cloths. Â Surprisingly, there is a salad bar which is rare in diners around here. Â While we were seated and eating around noon, there were 7 other families that came in so the restaurant was bustling. Â There was one waitress waiting on everyone, and she and the kitchen kept-up quite well.
The menu was attractive offering many American and Mexican choices. Â My SO got a hamburger which was standard, small beef pattie and cheap bun with fries and soup, but the entire meal was only $5.00. Â I ordered the carne asada de tortas (steak sandwich). Â The bun was very nice and large, the skirt steak was bland but plentiful, and the refried beans smeared on the bun was perfect. Â I thought it was good. Â I wanted a salad instead of fries which would have cost me $2.99 extra, but after seeing how large the sandwich was, I skipped both the fries and salad.
I thought the service was much better than we experienced at the train museum, and the food was fine. Â I would eat here again if I were in Monon, but like the previous reviewer pointed out, there aren't many choices.
I love exploring small towns. Never know what your going to find? I was traveling thru and I saw I huge sign that read. Reme's Family Restaurant, Best Pizza in town. Turn left at the light. You know the one. There isn't another for 50 miles. And to have a slogan like that when the town is 3 blocks square and your only competition is Tombstone is comical! As I pulled up it looked closed? Then I saw someone move inside. As soon as I walked in the screen door slammed behind me and the Hills Have Eyes were all on me! Eeek! The place looked like an antique shop and the town's ensemble was, flannel for men and camouflage for women. I sat myself and a waitress came over immediately. I took the menu and ordered a Pepsi. I looked around the room and the food actually looked pretty good. The menu also had pretty pictures like they have in the big city! Rensselaer, they have a Walmart! I got a turkey club with fries and it came with soup. When I asked what the choices were? I was told cream of potato or cream of potato. Nice! I tried to check-in on FB, but my i phone couldn't get thru all the corn and cow shit! I went to wash my hands, which was probably a mistake. They had a huge picture of a this creepy bunny that I thought was put there for Easter? Until I saw the finger prints in dust. Did I say eek already? I couldn't figure out how not to touch anything after I washed my hands and get out of this odd house that I stupidly locked myself in. My sandwich came in less than 5 and I was told that my soup was coming? The fries were nothing special unless drenched in Ketchup. The sandwich was tasty and had standard amount of turkey that was of different thicknesses. So it wasn't pre-sliced. My soup came and it looked like they opened a can of condensed soup and plopped it in the cup. It was cold and had no seasoning to even continue wasting my time with it. I like to take different routes in my travels. Now that I have seen and tasted everything in Monon, I can move on!
