Let's have a look...$12 for over cooked 1/4lb hamburger. Six of us dining, three burgers burnt and the other two had dry chicken. Â One escaped without a problem. Took way to long to get our food. Waitress never came back. Of course everyone was out of water trying to down the burnt food. Had to walk up to the bar with our glasses to get served. Will not be returning. Too hard to get into the place in the first place. Head into Helena and eat at Silverstar. Better food, service and prices.
Our friends from Helena hyped this place like crazy....they were embarrassed.
I've always liked the food- even a picky relative of mine who visits periodically enjoys it. It tends to cater to families, so don't expect a nice quiet evening- you'd expect a lot of noise in the grill/saloon area, but it'd be nice if you could hear yourself talk in the dining room- if the clientel are noisy, tho, that can also mean they're happy, so that can be a good sign.
A problem in general with restaurants is they tend to be entry level jobs for kids and those fresh out of school, so the work ethic and manners tend to be somewhat lacking, but you'll find that at a lot of other places. Service is not the best at peak hours (which is understandable), so we like to go during off-hours. They do have some experienced and friendly wait-staff. I give this restaurant 3 and a half stars!
One of the areas most expensive restaurants, but with excellent service and generously portioned, tasty food, it is well worth it.
Our server was smart, fast, and kid friendly. Her advice was spot on, and the drink glasses were always full.
If I had a complaint, the BBQ sauce on the all you can eat Tuesday night rib special was a little sweet. Also they have a kids & senior menu that is more reasonably priced than the main menu. My son had the chicken parmesan from the kids menu and it was delicious.
I went there for an anniversary dinner with my husband. We went in and the host said he would be right back, he left we waited 10 minutes and two ladies came up to the counter and neither one even acknowledged us. Â Someone else walked in who they were on the first name basis with and gave her the to-go order, a few minutes later another person walked in and asked to place a to go order, again they were on the first name basis with him and he was promptly helped. By this time 15 minutes had gone by and we were still waiting. A couple (also known to the two ladies at the front) came in from the bar side asked if they could have a seat in the dinning area, they were shown to their seat right then and there. I had gotten completely fed up by this time and walked out. My husband waited a few more minutes (total wait time 30 minutes) and no one ever came back. I will NEVER set foot in that place again.
Review Source:The Montana City Grill & Saloon is pretty pricey for what you get. Â The decor is nice, the staff are nice, but the food is NOT a great value. Â The menu selections provide for a decent selection, but come on, $15.00 for Spaghetti with marinara sauce?, and by the way, that is all you get, noodles, and sauce for that price. Â Spaghetti was also the cheapest menu selection, and the prices just went up from there.
Want a great steak? Drive up the road and go into Helena for the Silver Star.
I really, REALLY want to give this place more stars but unfortunately one of my most unforgivable moments in dining took place here.
I'll start with the good:
The food is damn decent, I almost always have salmon something (and they can cook it medium rare!) Â and the motherly servers are fantastic. I like the atmospheres, and I say this because they can accommodate a private date night or a good group party all at the same time! I continue to eat here fairly regularly and always enjoy it! Â (even the ugly moment was funny enough be enjoyable)
The Ugly:
NOTE: servers who argue with customers are not very bright; especially when they have no idea that the customer is a professionally trained chef. Â My husband ordered a steak, medium rare, it arrived almost completely well done. Normally he'll eat it anyway but it was a special occasion and just TOO well done so he talked to the server about it and asked to get a new one, never pleasant but it happens right? Â She picks the plate up from in front of him and holds it at eye level and says "In this light it looks medium rare." FANtastic, if he wants to go all the way up there to eat a hovering steak it will LOOK like it's medium rare. Â She does take the steak back, and to be fair was very congenial about the whole thine, and when it comes back it's blue rare, he decides to eat this one after one more round of the server telling us that in the fluorescent light of the kitchen it was definitely pink (I swear, it was not) Â We did get free dessert and as I mentioned she was pleasant the whole time and we got a good laugh (still do) about steak being medium rare in the right light!
We ate at the Montana City Grill for lunch. It was good but the portions are huge! Neither of us was able to finish the meal. The lunch menu is substantially smaller than the dinner menu, so we are absolutely planning the go back for dinner at some point. I generally do not like french fries but forgot to ask to switch for a salad so my sandwich was served with fries and they were absolutely fantastic! I now understand by a basket of cheese fries is a lunch entree item. The service was good and the atmosphere is casual without being seedy. I recommend giving this place a try.
Review Source:We held our 25th Class Reunion here (HHS!!) this past summer. Â In planning this from California, I have to say that Chris made it very feasible and easy (helped that I had someone in Helena to go check it out!). Â
The food was wonderful...the room is perfect for a small group...and the people are just out of this world. Â Reasonable prices and did I mention how great the food was? Â
Next time I'm back home...I'm headed to dinner there...no banquet, just a nice yummy dinner!
