Atmosphere is great. We had a semi large party and were seated in the back room, which was perfect. Ordered the corn and shrimp chowder to start and shared the lamb burger. The food was good, but I've had a better lamb burger before.

Great place for all occasions and all reasons. It is a great date spot, business meetup and dinner spot. Enjoyed Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich, Watercress & Peppercorn Mayo dish, tasty, nice and enjoyed the fries, too.
Centrally located in Downtown Napa on 1st street across from Andaz hotel. Great food, ambiance and incredible service, I am hooked, I will become a regular! :)

The boyfriend and I have so much fun coming to this part of town as our last stop on the way home. The food here is great and on the more reasonable side compared to some of these other places in town. The decor is super masculine and I LOVE IT! The booth's are adorn with this 70's olive green vinyl and the whole place is done in dark colors. Food is great and they have specials every day. Staff is super nice too :)

Napa is perfect for great food and great wine. After your afternoon recovery nap from the red, then white, then red again wine tastings, I suggest you check out Norman Rose. We were there over a weekend, and ate there twice. The grilled cheese sandwich is scrumptulescent and is a perfect pairing with their tomato soup. The fries and mac and cheese moved notches on our belts. Go here, its fantastic and not over priced.

I can't speak for the food or drink. It might be awesome, but we never got past the door. My hubby and I arrived to celebrate our anniversary and requested to cozy up in a booth. It was 5pm and business was slow, but the manager refused to let us sit in a open booth since we weren't a party of 4 or more. I can totally see this if the place was packed, but...it wasn't. The hostess looked a little apologetic but the manager seemed rude to us and walked away before the situation was even settled...like he had better things to do (in a dead bar) than talk to two paying customers celebrating something special. It was such a negative "welcome" that we turned around and walked out. I was very disappointed.

Slow Service, and the food was mediocre. Fantastic beers on tap make this a 3-star instead of 2-star. However, they took the beer menu away after one beer!

LOVE NRT!!!  The food is amazing, especially the Five Dot Ranch Burgers and the parmesan truffle fries!  The staff is friendly and the atmosphere is lovely!  I've eaten here many times and always recommend it!  It's a bit pricey but you are paying for top quality food!

Clean place but one of those restaurants where the menu and descriptions SOUND  so good but the reality is far from what you would expect. Their sister restaurant Pizza Azzurro is the same. The result is just ok. Way overpriced. The service is really
not good and the bartenders are quite impressed with themselves. For Napa this is just a mediocre at best place. My friends agree so we don't really consider it.
Anyway, they seem  to try hard but I get the feeling they just take recipes and ideas from Food and Wine or other such magazines and try and do it at the restaurant....
that usually does not work. The wine list is good though.  The days for 80 word descriptions of your food are over. Keep it simple and follow through.
I just don't see them making it a few more years.

Great place. Feels very local. Gets jumpin' after 8. Had a great meal. Dessert(bread pudding) was meh but I shouldn't have really kept stuffing my face anyway. Huge tasty portions that won't break the bank after wine tasting in Yontville:)

There is nothing special about the place for me or my family.  We ordered the peppered fries and they came without salt or pepper.  The lamb burger I ordered medium-rare (I wanted pink, but cooked) came raw and cold in all but the very outside.  I waited 10 minutes to try and send it back, but finally gave up when I couldn't get anyone's attention without standing up and walking to them. The help seemed distant and had time to stand and talk in the corner, but acted like they were very busy with only 4-5 tables being waited on.  After awhile one waiter who I had not seen earlier on that visit noticed whatever we needed as he passed by and seemed to take over on our table even though he was not working that area.

We have been there three times because we wanted to give it a fair chance, but it now becomes evident that the name says it all...it's a tavern that sells food, not a restaurant.

I probably will only go back if others in our group want to go there.

I'm glad I didn't rely solely on the majority of reviews I read here....I thought this restaurant was terrific. I can't give it five stars ... but if you work on tweaking the personality/service style/knowledge of your wait staff and speed your service up just a tad, you'd have it. The burger I had was soooo good. Everyone else ordered the fish and chips. It's a hit or miss dish and frankly the bite I had was pretty good. But in all honestly, fish n' chips is both hard to mess up and just not interesting. It's a solid go-to. If you want to be impressed order something more interesting. Great ambiance - enough volume to make it feel lively without being obnoxious. And the location is great ... especially as guests at the nearby Hyatt. They don't take reservations so if you show up at 7 expecting a table you just might have to wait. Fantastic outdoor patio. If you're only in town for one night and looking for something special - this isn't it. But if you've just arrived in town, or you've eaten your way through a lot of other places....I think it's perfect.

The burgers here give me a little food orgasm. I love the truffle Parmesan fries. The fried chicken sandwich is amazing. They have a good selection of beers drinks. The specials are almost always great. I love when the wife gives me the ok to take her here.

I recently had a great dinner at Norman Rose. If you're in the mood for comfort food then look no further. Their sliders with the avocado relish are amazing and only $2.50 a piece during happy hour! (3-6 pm I believe). Plenty of beers on tap if you are 'wined-out.' Next time i go to Norman I will definitely try the disco fries- the person next to me got them and they looked out of this world. Great job!

Nothing wrong with the place. Been here twice. Got the burger both times. Not to imaginative but we had a business meeting to get to both times, and they got us in and out. It's a clean nice looking place. The service was really fast. The price was right and I would go back tomorrow, if I was in the area

Drank and ate at the bar tonight. This place has a good vibe and is friendly. Good food, savvy bartender (Nate) who handles his craft with understated efficiency. I'll be back.

Great place, friendly service, huge portions and very knowledge about food allergies. My family and I were just driving around looking for a place to eat and we saw the menu and decided to stop in. We started with the chips and dips. The great thing about this appetizer is that they fry all potato products in one fryer so they are free of gluten. For lunch my mom had the hot dog, which looked great! Dad had burger which was served with delicious pickle. I had the pork chop with Brussels sprouts and sweet potatoes with pork belly. Which the chef customized for my allergies. Next time we are headed to Napa we will stop here!

Came in with two friends on a Monday night. Two of us were local, one was not. We've been here before and it's a solid place, but has never blown us away. I usually would prefer to go elsewhere, but tonight it wasn't my call.

We were promptly seated, two in a booth, one in a chair. Our guest's chair wobbled quite a bit so he folded up a (paper) napkin and put it under a leg to stabilize it. A few minutes later the waiter came by an commended him on his ingenuity. A few minutes after that, the manager came by and pulled the napkin out from under the chair, without saying a word, and walked off. Keep in mind this was under the foot of a chair with a grown man sitting into it. It couldn't have been mistaken for trash and it would take quite a deal of force to pull this out from under the chair.

We looked at each other bewildered, as if we couldn't have believe it happened. Sure enough, it had. Moments later, the waiter came back and joked about how his manager stole it. We weren't happy.

We soon placed our order, two burgers and a sandwich. The food came out very quickly, except the burgers (both different) were handed to the wrong people and each included bacon, which we didn't order. I love bacon, but I'm not going to pay $2 for it to be on a burger. We mentioned it to our serve and thankfully he said we wouldn't be charged for it.

The food was great, but the nerve of the manager to do what she did killed it for us. Manager Lady, if you don't want people folding up napkins so your chairs don't wobble, don't buy cheap chairs or take care of them better/repair them.

As far as the food goes, it is on point. The lamb burger is finger licking good. Can be a bit pricey but what do you expect when its a bit gastropubby.

Party of five for lunch. We were seated quickly and the waitress came over right away. She had a bit of an attitude which is always irritating, but didn't ruin the experience.

I ordered the lamb burger and it came with herbed goat cheese (which was such a nice balance) and garlic spinach. I ended up removing most of the spinach as I usually like it crisp and fresh not cooked and soggy. The bun was awesome! The burger was $15 and came with a tiny salad so I had to order fries on the side.

My hubby had the buttermilk chicken sandwich with watercress and peppercorn mayo. Really tasty, but only came with a pickle. What's the deal with not offering sides for a $12-15 sandwich?

I also had a ginger iced tea which was refreshing and had endless refills, so that made me happy.

The atmosphere is causal and fun, but more like a tourist hangout then a spot for locals. I know I love Napa... I am just saying.

    Spendy but trendy.
Bartender sucked that night, one my girls asked for a reccomendation for a sweet cocktail and ended up getting one that was sour.  He was not helpful at all.
The food is good, ate the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich.

Not overly impressed with the food or the service. I ordered the pork nachos and a beer. Both were overpriced. The staff talked shit about other restaurants in Napa, when I asked about what else was good in the area. Bad form.

I'll skip this stop on my next Napa visit.

We've been here twice now, and each time was similar. Good food, nice decor, well-meaning but perhaps slightly too ambivalent staff, and overall okay experience.

I love the fish sandwich. He had the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich once, and the flat iron steak the other time.  All of these items were tasty, well-made, and good sized.

The only food disappointment was the "disco" smothered fries dish - it was goopy and not as advertised;  the sausage gravy was more like lumps of Italian sausage, which was not appealing to the eye and didn't taste great, either. (I say stick to Poutine if you want that kind of thing.)

We like it enough as a neighborhood, American restaurant. We'll definitely be back for more.

Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich with Peppercorn Mayo.  Lamb Burger topped with Garlic Spinach and Herbed Goat Cheese.  Pliny the Elder on Tap.  'Disco' fries topped with Sausage Gravy and Cheddar Cheese.  Throw a fried egg on top of those fries for $2 more - if your going to toss your New Years Resolution, you might as well break it FOR REAL!

The Norman Rose is a great spot in Napa that comes off a little hip, but casual enough that it isn't overly hip like many Napa Valley restaurants.  It's a very stylish setting that is also accommodating to the everyday crowd that wants to have a burger and beer in a pub setting.  Some outdoor seating.  The manager and staff were especially nice on the busy day I went - which is extra bonus points in my book.  Will definitely be back when I am in the area again (hopefully soon!).

Amazing food, fun atmosphere and great service!! Fun place to come have a beer and watch the game, or have a cozy meal with family & friends. Slightly pricey and items are served a la carte, but so scrumptious!! I appreciate that they don't try to do a million things. They do a few things, and the outcome is superb!

I ordered their special last night -- grilled sordfish sandwich. It was hands down the most well prepared piece of fish I have ever had, and perhaps the BEST sandwich I've ever had as well!

Also, a very eclectic beer and wine menu (they serve Pliny the Elder and Blind Pig!! Major kudos for that!!!) I can't wait to go back again!!!

Truffle Fries, Griled Cheese (um, hello? Best I've ever had), Tillamook Mac N Cheese...I've never been disappointed here. Service is always friendly and fast, the outdoor seating is really nice when the weather permits, seating is comfortable and the atmosphere is casual and classy.

This is one of the hot spots for my friends and I, particularly because of the Grilled Cheese. Sounds ridiculous but don't knock it 'till you've tried it! It's inexpensive and a great option for something quick and mouth watering. Oh yes, and for all you sports fans out there, Norman Rose has big TVs with your sports games on. Always good to not miss my Oakland raiders losing, haha? Sigh. Anyways, poing I'm making is that it's a fun place, good food, nice people.

Great location on the corner 1st and Franklin in downtown Napa.  It is far more sophisticated than your typical tavern serving meals such as Lamb burgers with a load of cooked spinach topped with feta or the 5 dot ranch beef used to make a pretty delicious almost $20 burger.  The atmosphere is a bit stuffy, although it is promoted somewhat as a restaurant and bar with a sports theme I managed to me two really nice professional guys at the bar. I had a decent cosmopolitan cocktail and it was not too pricey.  There are many choices to make if just seeking a burger.  Here is where you go when you want a scaled up burger experience.  This is a great place to stop when in the area or for a lunch meet.

One of my all-time facvorite places to go and meet with friends. I'm a bar eater so that is usually what I gauge my reviews on, but I've been here many, many times so I've snagged a table as well.

The food is absolutely divine, higher-end pub food. If I'm getting a burger I always get it with cheese, bacon, avocado relish and fried egg on top. The delectable flavors just work and the hamburger is super juicy and flavorful. And they actually serve it medium when I ask unlike other places. Second favorite is the fried chicken sandwich which is moist with a great green stuff on top. And always, always get the truffle Parmesan fries. They are out of this world and put me in my happy place for sure.

My friends enjoy the beer options the servers never blink an eye when I bring a bottle of wine. They also recently received a full liquor license so if you are the cocktail drinking type, you will feel right at home here,

Over the years I've gotten to know the staff and although they might not know me by name, they always recognize a familiar face, and come by and say hello. Now that is friendly! As for those who think its pricey, it's Napa people! Rents are high and we use fine ingredients, it's worth it!

Norman Rose is a cool spot to go for casual drinks and appetizers or a casual yet classy meal. If I had to describe the ambiance I would say modern sports bar meets trendy wine bar. I wouldn't take a first date here, but its a great place to hang out with friends.

A lot of reviews complain about the prices. Evidently none of those reviewers have ever gone out to eat in Napa, because Norman Rose is on the affordable end of the pricing spectrum for this area. I'm not saying that they are cheap, but for what you get, and compared to similar restaurants in the area, they are fairly priced.

I was a little disappointed in the beer selection. They stock a lot of random craft beers but don't offer many well known beers. I don't want to spend 10-15 bucks to try a beer, just to find out I don't like it. I just want a Chimay!

As far as the food goes, it is above average, but the Lamb Burger is to die for. Best I've ever had! I may never order anything else.

Review based on Sunday, November 11th 3:00PM visit
Purpose was to watch the NINERS and get a bite to eat.

    ATMOSPHERE: 3.5 stars
    SERVICE: 3 stars
    FOOD: 3.5 stars

ATMOSPHERE: it's a tavern with chic twist. Very cool, and sophisticated. Young crowd like 30s, but not very diverse. Happy to see they have two HD TV's. I would've walked out if they weren't HD. I'm serious lol.

SERVICE: The staff is a bit cold, lack of friendly customer service when placing my order. Not the happy go lucky type of waiter/bartenders. Cool thing -sit at the side bar and you can watch the cooks cook. Nice.

FOOD: ordered the "5 Tip burger" with cheddar cheese + Truffle oil/Parmesan cheese.  ($7.95 extra for fries) Also got the Moscow mule served in the copper mug. Perfection. ($10) Very basic but very delicious.

    I'd eat here again.

came on a Saturday at 12pm and was quickly seated for 2.

My boyfriend and I ordered a tavern chopped grilled chicken which had apples, grapes, walnuts with a yogurt dressing. Yum. The salad came with a generous portion of chicken and the grapes/apples were delicious with the salad.

We also got the buttermilk fried chicken sandwich. Wow. This sandwich literally made my bf say OMG when he took his first bite. I thought he forgot something haha

Service was quick and attentive. A bit pricey for the salad but what do you expect in napa?

I was a very big fan of this place in downtown Napa.  We found it while leaving the Wine Train and walking around trying to sober up...turns out, a bar was the wrong place to do that.

The service was great, the atmosphere was sweet and I was able to watch the Vikings while in Cali...what more could I ask for (except a Vikings win...).

The prices, yes, like everyone is saying, are overpriced, but you're in downtown Napa, what did you expect?  Head over to Oakland if you wanted something cheap (even though a pint there was $5 too).

I would suggest Norman Rose to anyone looking for a quick bite to eat, a few drinks and some good times.  We never had more than the apps, so I wouldn't say much more than, I very much enjoyed my time at the Norman Rose Tavern in Downtown Napa, CA.

Muscles were good - I agree with Chris N's comment RE: overpriced (like almost everything in Napa) therefore,  I will not be returning anytime soon b/c THERE ARE SOOOOO MANY OTHER OVERPRICED RESTAURANTS IN NAPA TO CHOOSE FROM (lol - it's the truth).

No Happy Hour = Locals Not Interested :-(

I really like this place!!! Husband and I went up last week on a Wednesday so it was pretty quiet and lunch time -- you could tell it was mostly the locals which was nice. Has a very cozy feel to it which I enjoyed. Wait staff was super nice and we were seated right away.

At first glance of the menu I was a bit nervous as neither husband nor I eat meat so tavern probably not the best choice for us but friend and suggested we give it a try -- glad that we did.

We both ordered the grilled cheese and shared a field greens salad and a dish of summer grilled veggies. Everything was fantastic!!! The grilled cheese had just the right amount of cheese -- gooey but not gross gooey -- and was not dripping in butter which I hate. Grilled to perfection and it came with a side of tomato relish that was so damn good. Once of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I have ever had!!! And a good portion/size too.

Salad and grilled veggies were also very well prepared. A lovely lunch, nice staff and cozy -- thumbs up. Only reason I am not giving it 5 stars is that menu is really limited if you don't eat meat -- but if you do, think that you will enjoy this place.

Like everything in Napa, this place is overpriced. A fine restaurant, but more expensive than it should be.

We had a friendly server who did a quality job. The grilled cheese/tomato soup was a fun option, but really wasn't anything all that memorable. Again, cost a bit more than seemed necessary.

It would probably be a fun bar to hang out at during the evening, but as a lunch venue it's just good enough.

I just found my new favorite salad: the green goddess salad on crunchy romain with hints of radish and topped with pumpkin seeds. SIMPLICITY at its finest. I usually go for the lamb burger, but I'm pregnant and was wanting to eat something light and filling.

From a management position the only thing I saw that needed a little work was acknowledging guests that were leaving, you can never be buy to do that.

GREEN GODDESS salad should be at the top of their list replacing their blue cheese one :)
