The Nugget Bar

This is your quintessential dive bar. During our visit to Murphys someone mentioned a knifing at the historic hotel the previous night and a murder at The Nugget last month. It was daylight, a huge crowd on the streets from the President's Day wino weekend, so to satiate a sense of macabre, we checked out the place.

I bet we were the only tourists at the bar. We ordered a couple draft beers (I had Thompson apparently a local brew from Arnold, CA) and was befriended by a woman next to us. Well, befriended may imply a mutual interest but I don't think this woman asked any questions...she just told us her story.

I enjoy checking out dive bars in small towns...just for one beer...and I never do it locally.

Great place if you want to chill a few at a dive. For a dive it's nice though, especially the lower area with the extra pool table and karaoke (Thurs. nights).

This is a great little business in a Gold Rush town in Murphys.  Really too bad the last reviewer is such a whiner.  Nice atmosphere, great pool table, the bartender was on top of it and people friendly, always willing to strike up a conversation with a thirsty stranger.  I was going through town and dropped in on Karaoke night Wednesday.  Great (and not so great) singers but everyone had a good time.  Megan sang great -- she was also my Mercer Caverns tour guide!  Have a beer and check it out.
