Open 24 hours for Gray Fox music festival. Â Waffle please?? Yes, I'd love one.
However, for as good as these waffles are, I walked in at 10 am, the place had 3-4 tables of patrons, but I still sat there for twenty minutes before someone took my order. Â Here's the thing, I thought I HAD ordered, but turns out, the kid who acted like he was taking my order wasn't, and then an older lady (his mom?) came over and said "We don't do orders like that anymore." Â What does that even mean? Â I can't ask a person with a tray and a notepad (not a waiter?) to take my order? Â Get it together 12 Tribes.
I love the Oak Hill Kitchen/Yellow Deli! I come out to this area a couple times a year for different events and my friends and I always look forward to our trips to Oak Hill. Every thing on the menu is delicious (especially the Iced Common Ground), the ambience is amazing, the staff are all nice, and the prices are very reasonable. If you're in the area, you should not miss it!
Review Source:Absolutely one of my favorite places to eat! The food is homemade and delicious, the people who run it, members of the Twelve Tribes, are sweet, caring people. Wonderful hosts, I had the pleasure of being a regular there, and they greeted us by name and remembered our favorites! They also host discussion meetings one night a week, have live music, show movies in the upstairs theater.....I can't say enough about this place! The sandwiches are fantastic, the quality of the food is top notch with generous portions. Their soups are unbeatable. Get a Deli Rose and you will swoon for the hot ketchup on it! The building is unique, with most of the wood used was pulled from the creek that runs behind the building. The store front sells natural soaps and sodas. If you don't go, you're missing out!
Edit: they used to be open 24 hours, closed Saturdays, but they've changed their hours (since my best friend and I moved out of the area, I feel....we were there a LOT) They close at 2 PM on Friday and reopen 10 AM on Sunday, open 10 to 10 every other day.
Edit Numero Dos: there was a rumor they were closing. They didn't (THANK GOD). A new pack of Twelve Tribe members moved in, and they have new "winter hours." To stay on top of their hours, what they're all about, check out their website. http://www.oakhillkitche…
Beautiful old Oak Hill Opera house nicely restored and being run as a 24 hour a day place to eat. Not extensive menu, but everything freshly made to order,,,,,,,,want coffee? they'll brew up a pot just for you. Don't really know anything about them, but seem to be nice peace loving folks minding their own business. Â The building is a must see. It is one of a kind...........
Review Source:This is a great little place my parents took me last night.
It's run by a religious group called the Twelve Tribes, who I haven't been able to totally figure out. They're Christian-based, but despite rumors, they don't seem to be a cult. Mainly their "thing" seems to be based on living off the grid as much as possible, and they're very interested in sustainability and renewable resources. They have several communities throughout the U.S. Â At this one, they have their own organic garden, they make their own clothes, they home-school their kids, etc. Â It doesn't come across as preachy though; this restaurant just seems strangely welcoming. They sort of remind me of the Amish.
This place is beautiful inside, while still projecting a distinct and calming air of simplicity. The inside features hand-carved benches (many still resembling the actual tree,) hand-hewn beams and a real salt-of-the-earth-seeming decor. There's also a little porch that overlooks a beautiful stream.
The food is not gourmet, but it is tasty, filling, wholesome food. The menu is primarily comprised of salads, sandwiches and hearty soups. No processed or overly fried foods, just whole-grain homemade breads, veggie-filled salads and clean, simple food. It's also cheap. I think the most expensive item was a $9 salmon sandwich. Salads ranged from about $5 to $7, and the portions were generous.
They also have a huge list of teas, focusing especially on their varieties of yerba mate. Coffee is served in a personal-sized French press.
In the front, there's a little shop where they sell teas, homemade hearty breads, and their homemade natural soaps, lotions and bath products.
Service wasn't exactly quick, but it was extremely friendly and genuine-seeming. Â It's also open 24 hours a day. I believe it's closed from Friday afternoon through Saturday for religious services.
The bottom line is that this a very cool place that's definitely worth checking out for the experience of it.
