Came here with a friend on a Saturday morning before a hike. The place feels like a cozy family run restaurant. There were a lot of people coming in that were mountain biking, off roading or just passing through. Even with the seats getting filled, the service was nice and friendly and the breakfast was good. It was decent pricing for being the only spot for miles. I might make this a regular visit on trips up the mountain.
Review Source:Just moved up to the area from Orange County, CA....definitely a great taste of home cooking!
I thoroughly enjoy their breakfast offerings-best yet, breakfast is available ALL DAY!
I took dessert home with me, a giant slab of chocolate cake. Can't wait to devour it later...
If you find yourself on the way to Big Bear or Mentone, stop by The Oaks for good food and a relaxing atmosphere. And check out the photography by the locals, too!
The OAKS is a great little family run restaurant stashed in the little town of Angelus Oaks, about 1/2 the way (time wise) from Mentone to Big Bear. Â The current owners have had the place since about 2003 (don't hold me on that). Â Prior to their taking over the place was horrible. Â
I spend 2 weeks every summer working at a music camp that meets at a camp in Angelus Oaks that only serves vegetarian food and several of the other staff and I will eat at the The Oaks several times a week. Â One of my cohorts eats every meal there every day. Â My wife and I have stopped there often when we go to our place in Big Bear. Â Be aware that they close fairly early, I think 7:00 or 7:30 pm.
They have a self serve coffee bar with regular Columbian coffee, decaf and a very tasty offering called Nutty Doodle.
Breakfasts have all the typical breakfast items you would want and are well done and not pricey. Â A good starter for the day.
Lunch and dinner are the high points for your visit. Many items have a choice of soup or the salad bar. Â The salad bar is a bit limited, but to even have one in a small place like this is a good point. Â Do not be afraid to try the soups. Â All of the burgers are good and the sandwiches well done, though you may feel the size of the sandwiches are a bit small. Â I really enjoy the tuna and have often had the chili size. Â One of the hidden stars is their pizza. Â You will have to wait a bit longer for them to make it but the pizzas are very well done for a small place like this. Â (Remember, like sex and politics, everyone has their own idea of what is good pizza!).
To end your meal the pies are home made daily. Â My favorite, which is not often available, is pear pie, sort of a custard and pear---mmmmm. Â Fruit of the Forest pie is a berry combo and very tasty. Â Â
Friendly staff, nice locale, homey feeling of the building and decent food make this a great place to eat.
I thought this place was a deal- it's the only restaurant on the top of a mountain and it was about 8 bucks a person- not bad when you have a monopoly.
I had chicken fried steak, eggs, bacon and biscuits and gravy- all delicious!!!
The kids loved their pancakes (huge), Turkey sandwich (yum) and my son ate his Mac n Cheese like a hoover-
Family place and it looked like the daughter was our waitress- she was very nice.
This place is 5 stars given the location. Keep in mind that you are in the mountains, so don't expect the Ritz.
We went here after a hike in the glorious San Gorgonio wilderness. I ordered the steak dinner. The steak was delish, the vegetables fresh and the soup (lentil) was yummy. I liked the the self-serve soup. Someone else in our party had coffee and she liked it. Coffee was self-serve, too.
The best part for me is the friendly family who runs this place. As hikers, we usually come into restaurants all smelly and dirty. We were hungry, smelly and dirty and a little loud because of the endorphins from our hike. The owners were very friendly and personable.
Also +1 the pies.
If I can give more stars I would. Excellent staff, so kind and helpful. We had a horrible experience with the Whispering Pines Cabins across the street and the staff at the Oaks Restaurant let us use their phone and gave us information on a great place to stay in Redlands.
I'm bummed we didn't get a chance to eat there, but the food looked and smelled incredible. The restaurant was spotless and they make you feel like home the minute you step in.
We already told all our friends about this place and we will make in a point to stop in again soon!!!!
This is a cozy little place on the road to Big Bear that my family and I stop at to relax for lunch when we travel in that area. The Oaks has a casual, cabin-y feel and warm service. You walk in and see the kitchy knick knacks for sale at the front and the hokey wall art, and you will either think it's beyond tacky or comfortable and homey. I have never asked but I get the impression it's family-owned and -operated.
Yes it's definitely geared toward tourists but the food is good enough that it's not a trap. The prices and portions are reasonable at the oaks (although definitely more expensive than picking up fast food on our journey, it's still budget-friendly). The salad bar is very basic and limited, but OK. I have ordered from the dinner menu the grilled trout and my DH loves the chicken fried steak; both are nicely done and satisfying. But what really stands out at this place is their desserts, which they make on site. The apple pie a la mode is outstanding, but what is not to be missed if it's available is the berry cobbler--not on the menu, look for it in the rotating dessert case when you come in. Made of boysenberries and the absolute best I've ever tasted!
Gotta be back for breakfast someday after reading the other yelps...if I can reanimate my carcass early enough that is.
This is a good restaurant with a welcoming atmosphere. We ordered chicken fried steak and fish & chips. The steak was okay but the fish was over battered - it looked like chicken fingers. The salad bar was fresh and tasty. They have wonderful breakfasts that are served all day. I had their grilled shrimp once before and it was very tasty. We will be going back - nice place and even nicer people.
Review Source:We went to this place because it was the first place we saw on the ride home from Big Bear to San Diego on Sunday morning. It is VERY good for breakfast. I cannot speak to the rest of the menu, but the breakfast was as good as it gets in terms of diner food. I had corned beef hash, two eggs over easy, and homefries...then got a bacon, egg, and chees sandwich to go. You cannot go wrong here. The Gavina coffee is good too. I would imagine the rest of their menu is pretty solid as well. Good comfort food.
