We were on our way to Pig Pine for a Memorial Day weekend camping trip. Â Stopped for gas, and the guy behind the counter recommended the Old Desert Cafe for breakfast.
Frankly, I wasn't too hopeful about experience. Â The place didn't even look like it was open (but it was), and the inside looks like a throwback to the 70's.
Having said that, the waitress was very friendly, had no problem taking special orders, the food was served quickly, the food was very good. Â I had the chorizo and eggs and it was really good. Â Two of my friends had eggwhite omlettes and they were happy with their meals. Â My other friend had the Huevos Rancheros, and he said it was very good as well.
Once again, a reminder--don't judge a book by its cover. Â This place has good food!
I'm from Washington State and had occasion to visit the Mojave area recently. Â My daughter and I stopped at the Old Desert Cafe while passing through Mojave. Â The burger was great as was the price. Â In fact, it was good enough that we made a point of stopping again as we left the area. Â Great food/great price. strongly recommended.
Review Source:We wanted to stop in Mojave for lunch on our way to Mammoth and this place had encouraging ratings so my friend and I decided to give it a try. It was around 2pm so we were definitely after whatever lunch rush they may have, which meant we were the lone diners for a while. I think it did used to be a Chinese restaurant of some kind in its previous incarnation; the dining room off to the right when you first walk in had Chinese restaurant-y furniture, but we were sat in the more "diner" section, with traditional diner booths. The place is clean, but a little dreary, given its very DIY-looking remodel. But whatevs, we were there for the food. I ordered their famous Cactus Burger with a side salad and my friend got just a regular burger with fries. The Cactus Burger was quite good, with big slices of green chile and bacon. The bun and patty were of the store-bought variety, but overall pretty good. The side salad was strictly meh--iceberg lettuce with little slivers of red cabbages and carrots. Nothing wilted, thank goodness, but nothing all that great. The bleu cheese dressing I got on the side was pretty bland too. My friend's burger and fries were pretty standard as well. Service was very friendly and efficient, but considering we were the only people in there it'd be pretty criminal if it wasn't. Overall not a bad place to stop for some cheap quick eats but I wouldn't consider it a "destination."
p.s. - there's a weird/funny situation in the women's bathroom: it has two toilets but no divider/stall between them. So you and a close friend could share that bathroom but otherwise...
Old desert cafe review
Looking for a quick bite before the trek to Vegas was not to hard to do since I yelped it... I find the old desert cafe and decided let's do it.
Looks like someone bought a chinese restaurant and converted it to a cafe... Some doubts at first but it's clean and I have a drive ahead of me. I'm not turning back, I'm not in Vegas but I'm already gambling and I call this a hard way bet....
So we sit down get some simple menus, American and a Mexican things, my wife picks the Cajun salad and I go for the wet breakfast burrito.
Burrito: this thing comes out with home fries and it is huge. The burrito is stuffed with meat eggs and all the other good things. The home fries were surprisingly good too, fresh cubed fried potatoes mixed with onions bell peppers too.
They also brought out some rolls with our meal that were sooo soft and had a garlic butter something on them.
I didn't get to try my wife's salad though it looked pretty good before she chopped it to smithereens.
---Portions are large
---Ingredients are fresh
---Both our dishes were made
---Protip: try the rolls they bring out, they are awesome. Think Hawaiian roll warmed up with some kind of seasoned butter. Really good.
Two thumbs up for this diner! Looks shabby on the outside, but clean and nice on the inside. I ordered the club sandwich with a side salad. Everything was fresh and tasty. My boyfriend ordered the BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger which was delicious. The French fries were meaty, crispy, and perfectly seasoned. Service was friendly!
Such a relief to find this place because quite frankly, I'm sick of the double golden arches!
Update 5/2012
I passed through on my way home yesterday and because it was later (as opposed to my normal stop in time of 6am) I tried their breakfast buffet. Â Pretty terrible. Â Old eggs, rubbery pancakes, and maybe the worst homefries I've ever eaten. Â I'll keep my original 4*s based on their regular menu which is great but give the breakfast buffet a miss.
Original:
I asked the clerk at one of the gas stations where I should go for breakfast and this restaurant was the first out of her mouth. Â As others have noted, this place is a clean and comfortable restaurant located on along a dusty strip of CA14. Â I stopped in bright and early on Saturday morning (630am) for breakfast and was the only one there. Â I ordered a Mexican egg concoction with peppers, beef, and eggs. Â It was terrific. The one waitress who had the morning shift was friendly enough.
Next time I am swinging through town I will return here.
Great spot along a dry old highway. Â We were passing through mojave and this was our last chance for a meal. Â We came into the Old Desert Cafe and were greeted by a very friendly waitress. Â Had the Club Sandwich and it was GREAT. Â Definitely will be coming back next time we pass through.
Review Source:We were passing through and feeling tired of the breakfasts at the big "D" restaurant in town when we found this on yelp, thank goodness! Â The food is terrific, the portions are generous, the prices are VERY reasonable, the service is both friendly and enthusiastic, and the restaurant is clean and well cared for. Â
The hours (as of this writing): Sunday through Thursday 6:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with hours extended through dinner on Friday and Saturday. Â
Oh, by the way, they serve lunch during breakfast hours...love that!
Give this new place a chance, you won't regret it!
There's a row of gas stations and whatnot along this strip of highway 58 in Mohave, a d we thought we'd give this one a try since it was't here last time we came thru. We were here for breakfast. One of us ordered an omelette; very hearty portion, and the hash browns are cooked nice and crisp (not soggy like some places). One of us also had their breakfast "buffet"--nothing fancy, but just the basics. Scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuits and gravy, oatmeal, etc.
The place is plain but clean, the seats are not sticky. One nice thing for large parties: they can remove the wall partition between two booths to turn it into a very large seating area that will seat 8 (nota counting any chairs you pull up on the ends), which is very nice if you want everyone to be able to sit together.
If this were in a bigger town I'd probably give it 3 stars, but having a clean, comfortable place in the middle of the dessert rates it an extra star.
This place has the best club sandwich I've had in ages and the fries are great, too, nice and crispy and oh-so-flavorful. The folks who work there are very pleasant and attentive... you ask for something and it's there. Prices are very reasonable. If we lived in Mojave we'd be eating there quite a bit, but it's worth a trip once a month or so.
