If you're on here checking out Old Mill before going....get off the internet and drive there, now!
This place is awesome!!! Â When you walk in to the sound of 100 or so people with mallets pounding the fool out of whatever it is on their plate you know you're in for a treat. Â Also, not being from these parts but being a self professed glutton I LURVE the fact that they have large trash cans at each table to collect the carnage. Â My kind of place.
No frills dining at it's finest is a good way to describe my experience. Â All you can eat Maryland Crab, peel and eat shrimp covered with Old Bay, Lobster claws were all awesome! Â For a little over $20.00 I had a steamer with lobster claws, clams, 1/2 lb of shrimp, corn and potatoes. Â I enjoyed watching the people eating the all you can eat crab....the waitress dumps a crapload of crabs in the middle of the table and keeps refilling as the pile grows thin. Â Then, mallets in hand people slam down and the shells and meat starts flying. Â Simply awesome
Also, on the way out I got 2 t-shirts for $20.00 for the kids. Â What could be better?
Excellent job, Old Mill. Â I'll be back!!
Overrated.
Went here on a Thursday evening with 27 people, including a 12-and-under girls softball team and 15 parents. Â None of us got the all-you-can-eat crabs, but instead ordered individual meals. Â Food was decent, but not worth the price. Â Fried shrimp were your standard commercial frozen stock, with too much breading. Â Pretty blah. Â
Service was nice but not very competent. Â Dads' table got food quickly. Â Team's table got their food 30 minutes later, and the Moms' table got their food about 10 minutes after that. Â Most disappointing though was that the manager never bothered to check on us and only came to our table when our girls were having fun and did one of their dugout cheers - only to scold the girls. Â Restaurant was almost empty at the time and we'd just gotten our $850 bill - not good timing. Â
I'd not go back again and instead will go to the Red Roost in Whitehaven MD, where the food is great and service is solid and happy!
This no-frills establishment is everything I could ever want out of a crabshack!
First off....you cannot get a better deal than the All-You-Care-To-Eat specials. Â I like the Maryland Blue Crabs one that comes with fried chicken, fried shrimp, fried clams, hush puppies, and corn on the cob. Â That all comes WITH my blue crabs and it's under $50. Â In Annapolis, the crabs alone would be $50!
This is some of my favorite fried chicken. Â Juicy and perfectly fried. Â You can even ask for all white meat at no extra charge.
They don't take kindly to sharing and you definitely cannot get a to-go box.
My only sadness is that the beer selection is limited....but they do always have the Sam Adams seasonal and those are always good.
My wife and I were driving up through Delmarva and decided we wanted/needed crabs, so while she drove I started searching for somewhere that was close to our route. Â We found a couple places that looked promising, but decided to go with the Old Mill. Â It's just off of Route 13, so was only a minor diversion from our route... and it was well worth it. Â I guess it could be described as a bit pricey, but for the massive amount of phenomenal food we had, I'd say we more than got our money's worth. Â The crabs were great, I could have made a meal of the fried chicken alone, and the hush puppies were unreal. Â (anything that's served under so much powdered sugar that it looks like a winter scene gets my vote)
Service, I honestly don't remember, I'm pretty sure they got us what we needed when we needed it, other than that it's not what I remember. Â What's the most telling about this place is that since we were there that one time, my wife keeps coming up with reasons to drive back down to that area so we can have dinner there again. Â (we're an hour north of Philadelphia, 3 hours from this place) Haven't done it yet... but we will.
I haven't been in a couple of years because 1) they have a picture of Kramer from Seinfeld displayed proudly. (which sends a message to African American customers). 2) I ordered a platter and there were no scallops on my plate. The waitress insisted that they were there and I must have eaten them and was trying to get more. I was very insulted and embarrassed. 3) they have no diversity in their wait staff. My co-workers and I used to go there monthly, but never again.
Review Source:On our way to the Outer Banks, the wife, the baby and I stopped at Old Mill for real Maryland-style steamed blue crabs. Very colorful decor and cheerful servers!
For $35 each, we got amazing AYCE blue crabs, plus sides of husk-on corn on cob (delicious!), the largest hush puppies I've ever seen, fried clam strips and fried shrimp with a real great cocktail sauce spiked with horseradish.
Only negative: We got some steamed shrimp too, and they were so overcooked, the shells were like goo, and very hard to peel. Otherwise, it was a great experience! Would highly recommend!
The one time I went to Old Mill was good--and it was the first time I ate Maryland blue crab. Now, I'm addicted.
Only downside is I could tell this place was very touristy--not many locals were eating here. And I felt a bit rushed.
If you eat here, get the all-you-can-eat-crab. It's the best deal for your moolah.
Go for the all you can eat blue crab special which comes with corn on the cob, clam strips, fried shrimp, hush puppies, and fried chicken. Â The chicken is pretty damn good by itself. Â They play the game well by bringing the fried stuff early and distracting your stomach from the crabs, so don't go overboard on the appetizers.
The crabs are hit or miss on weight, but they're pretty decent on average. Â If you don't like one, just toss it and get another. Â I don't even bother with the claws. Â If you're tacky like me, bring your own knife with a rounded point. Â Theirs are too pointy. Â Brush off the seasoning as well. Â The salt tearing up my lips has stopped me from eating more several times.
I know beer and crabs go together like peas and carrots, but stay away from the beer because you won't be able to eat as much. Â It's expensive (duh) and carbonated as hell.
The setting is a little spartan for some. Â It's just your group, the food, some paper towels, your drinks, squeeze butter, and brown paper on the table.
Shoot to go on weeknights and chow down!
Warning: The ONLY thing worth getting here is the all-you-can-eat crab. If you get a platter or crabcakes you will be paying way too much for way too little. And the platters aren't anything special.
But if you get the all-you-can-eat crab, you will love this place. My family had great service with constant offers for more crab. Great price and value if you come here hungry.
I'm not sure how the platters are but if you're going for all-u-can-eat crabs I was pleased with this place. Â The extras that come with the crabs (chicken, corn, etc.) were good as well. Â Go early because there was a line to get in prior to opening. Â It got very crowded however they were able to keep up on drinks and food. Â This is clearly a place that is catering to Eastern Shore residents and does not fall into the tourist trap mode. Â It was a bit pricey but if you're hungry you can get your money's worth. Â All and all I would recommend. Â It clearly is better for groups than it is for couples unless you're a crab fanatic.
Review Source:This place was a bit hard to find, in addition to the gps acting up. Â The establishment was located at a Y intersection so we found it driving around the area. Â As soon as we got out of the car, you can smell the seafood spices permeating the parking lot, had we been driving with the windows down, we would have probably found it by scent.
There were quite a few patrons in the establishment but we were seated immediately for a party of 6, it was around dinnertime on a Sunday afternoon. Â We were seated in a booth that comfortably sat 4 so we asked to be seated somewhere else. Â The server moved us to the table adjacent to the booths with a little reluctance; kinda weird especially since one of the guys in our party of six is 5'7" and about 270. Â No way he would fit in a booth with 2 others.
Our drinks came immediately after we were seated and within ten minutes, my friend's all you can eat platter came out. Â (We each ordered individual platters except for my bud who ordered the all you can eat shrimp, fried chicken and hush puppies). Â We waited almost 35 minutes for our individual platters, and our friend who started eating was nearly done with his first round before we even started. Â I guess the all you can eat people get to eat first because everything is already pre-prepared. Â As we sat there longing for food, we watched our server continue to serve the table next to us, twice filling their tables with extra crabs, corn, and hush puppies. Â She checked on us once after that but didn't bother to ask if we needed refills for our drinks. Â I guess I have a lot to say about the service because there wasn't really any.
Our food came eventually and I asked for some hot sauce. Â Minutes later, I was dismayed to receive 4 tear packets of hot sauce instead of a bottle or small container. Â What a major fail. Â Placing the 4 packets of sauce in a french-fry paper boat didn't make up for the fail. Â You always have to have some kind of hot sauce. Â The only reason I am rating this place with 3 stars is because the food was flavorful. Â Not good, or delicious, but flavorful. Â Our platters were highly overpriced (all over 22), my buddy's all you can eat chicken was almost 20 bucks! Â 40 bucks for all you can eat crabs is a bit much especially since you can buy a bushel for almost that. Â As an establishment that uses paper boats for their hush puppies and clam strips and fries, a cardboard table cloth as a serving area for the crabs (they were just heaped on there), and a garbage can to the side, one would think the savings on utensils, plates and cups would offset the cost of their food. Â Not so. Â
I will need to add that my ribs and crab cake were tasty but unfortunately, I won't be going back there again. Â Not unless it's the last place in the east coast that serves all you can eat blue claws.
Oh and by the way, there are no options for blueclaws in the shell. Â They didn't serve us blueclaws a la carte, it was all or nothing. Â They said they don't do that.
Actually, I changed my mind and am gonna give it 2 stars for our 185 dollar dinner bill for 6 people, and none of us except one had all you can eat chicken.
Hard to find if you're not an eastern shore expert, the Old Mill Crab House is the best of the best of Maryland seafood. It's a family style restaurant where they put brown paper down on the table and bring you steamed crabs by the platter. There are no plates. Most order the All You Can Eat special, which is probably around $30 - $35 per person by now, but is definitely worth it and actually, a really good deal considering what crab costs at all other restaurants. It's all you can eat steamed Maryland crabs with Old Bay, along with friend chicken, fried shrimp, corn on the cob, hush puppies, clam strips and more. There is a regular menu you can order off of if that's not what you want, but if you're not going to get the crabs, it's probably not worth the wait/hassle, although the chicken is pretty good if you are bringing along non-seafood-lovers. There's also lots of cheap beer. On the brown paper, they give you all the tools (and bibs) you need to crack into those delicious, fresh, succulent crabs that have traveled such a short way from their watery home nearby to your table.
Maybe I'm nostalgic since I grew up on the eastern shore of Maryland, but I can't think of anything more delicious than steamed seafood with lots of Old Bay. I have seriously contemplated driving the 6 or 7 hours from my current home in North Carolina to eat there. It's a must-visit. If you are anywhere near it, seriously, go find it.
It's only open seasonally (March - November I think), and it's in the middle of nowhere, but expect a long wait any evening because it's always packed and they don't take reservations. Check the website for info: http://www.oldmillcrabho…
The 2 stars are for the last time I was there... Â I've been to this Old Mill 3 or 4 times. Â The first few times were fine, but the last was bad... Â The last time I was there was in March, before crab season, so perhaps that's why we had such a bad experience.
In short, the crabs were awful. Â They were small, and several of them were overdone. Â Let's put it this way -- I made most of my meal out of the fried shrimp that come with the dinner. Â Even though my first few times going to Old Mill were pretty good, I will think twice about going there again based on how bad this visit was.
This is not your typical Ocean City crab house. Over the years, I think I've gotten used to the small crabs that populate the touristy all-you-can-eat places that line the Maryland and Delaware shores. So when our waitress at Old Mill dumped the first load of crabs onto our table, I assumed that we make quick work of them. I was wrong.
The crabs were meaty and delicious. The seasoning was great--just the right amount. The staff was friendly, and despite what others have said, there was no wait (5 p.m. on a Sunday night in late August), but I'm sure this varies greatly. The other accoutrement was fine--corn, fried shrimp, fried chicken, etc.--and the price was reasonable at $32.95/person (not to mention $2 domestic draft beers). This is a bit more than the going rate on the shore, and it's a 45-minute drive away, but it was well worth it.
Dang.
Just seeing these photos makes my mouth water.
The Old Mill Crab House is the quintessential gathering place for anyone who wants FRESH seafood on the Eastern Shore.
It's a must-visit for every family. The cost can get a little high... but that's what you should expect with an all-you-can-eat crab house.
Roll out that brown butcher paper, hand me a wooden mallet, pull up a yellow-lined trash can... and let me get to work. It's crab-pickin' time!
TIP: The all-you-can-eat Snow Crab Legs are phenomenal... and don't get too stuffed on all the amazing fixins that they bring out first... IT'S A TRICK! hahaa...
Best place on the shore for crabs and local people! Excellent service & food! It doesn't get much better than this! Pleasant and attentive waitresses. Bathrooms were bright & spotless. Food was plentiful and no wait for them to bring out the crabs. (you didn't have to fill up on chicken, shrimp and corn... Although that was great). Our table was always full of crabs. See my great pictures I added on yelp! Loved it!
Review Source:I'm shocked the Old Mill doesn't have a review yet, as they are always packed when I've been. Â The Old Mill is a classic all-you-can-eat crabhouse with trashcans next to each table and all the fresh blue crab, snow crab and steamed shrimp you want. Â The 'fillers' are quite good, as well, consisting of fried chicken, hush puppies (with powdered sugar), corn in the husk (delicious), fried shrimp bites and clam strips. Â The Old Mill has nice decor and family atmosphere compared to some of the crab dives I've been to. Â The giant crab sculpture and icecream stand are nice touches. Â They are a bit pricey, but this seems to be a trend with all my favorites lately.
