I would also give a negative star rating if I could. Alex the owner / chef is a good cook and the food is OK, BUT Julia, owner / waitress, is a complete bitch. It seems that she tries to be as rude as possible to most customers, weather she is busy or not. She is downright argumentative. It's hard to understand how someone that's obviously so repulsed by serving customers chooses to run a restaurant? We will never go back there.

Yuck! Went to this restaurant for breakfast and the entire experience was disgusting! Wait staff was very slow and food lacked everything.

Crazy prices for food that makes hospital cafeterias seem like 5 star restaurants. Ridiculously rude service too. What a joke.

We stop here for breakfast every summer on our way to raft the Truckee River. The food quality has slipped. I ordered a the breakfast sandwich with bacon. The bacon 'bits' came already cooked into the 'omelette' type egg filling. I had expected a fried egg with slices of bacon and cheese but not so although the menu description really didn't specify. The country potatoes are soggy, i.e., 'steamed'.

Pancakes were ok and my brother inhaled his french toast. Anyways, will try the Fire Sign ? restaurant next year.

We're summer locals. We enjoy going to this breakfast spot at least a couple of times per summer. I read the "rude" reviews and have to say that Julia has always been nice to us. She knows us and takes time to come say hi. Her staff is friendly too, though sometimes a little inexperienced. I'm not one to complain though. I have a nice breakfast here. Their window tables are warm and cozy!

A nice spot for breakfast or lunch near the lake. If you're on a boat, you can dock at Obexer's and walk across the street. There's some bad reviews here for service...all I can say is that my experience was a nice one. The waitress was really friendly and helpful, and the food was good...I had the french toast and they were tasty. Nothing to write home about, but very satisfying...

I agree with the guy who would like to give it a negative five stars. This place appears to be owned and operated by racist bigots. Julia is the most unfriendly, grudge ridden waitress I've ever seen. I've witnessed and received atrocious service by her. She needs meds. The person below that calls her a giant bitch,...ha, that is so true. I can't imagine how her husband chef puts up with her. Julia clearly does not want to be in the food service industry. I don't think I've ever been to a place with worse service. I live close by so I've give them a chance three times and they are consistentlty rude, mean, bitchy, over priced, poor quality and bigoted. I'll never go back.
I really miss the previous owners of this place. They really had it down.

I would never recommend this place. It's too greasy and too expensive and frankly the owners and staff are rude!

I would give them NEGATIVE FIVE STARS if I could. These are homophobic horrible people that don't deserve your business. And to read a couple reviews down, they are also racists. First, the food alone warrants the zero star rating. Really crappy greasy-spoon food at crazy-expensive prices. I mean more expensive than Firesign, which is really awesome, well-prepared and thoughtful food just down the road. (Check out their yelp http://www.yelp.com/biz/…) Anyway, just recently a gay couple attempted to eat a meal here and the owner Julija (who has a raging case of halitosis) literally THREW THINGS AT THEM and shouted homophobic slurs while kicking them out. Unbelievable. They should be shut down.

The Old Tahoe Cafe serves a very good breakfast: Try the oatmeal with raisins, walnuts, brown sugar and milk, or any of the omelet specials. I think there's also a new cook, because the food is better than in the past. On a recent visit, the pancakes were fluffy and my sunny-side up eggs perfectly cooked. The breakfast burritos are HUGE.

Yes, the service can be slow. But hey, this isn't McDonald's! The waitress is friendly; she's been there at least several years. This place can fill up fast, so come early.

The only downside: The coffee is VERY weak. I'd hold off on the coffee and get the fresh squeezed orange juice instead.

This place is a joke. Very bad service and gross over priced food. The locals call it Diarrhea Cafe, and that's exactly what this place will give you. Stay away especially if you have kids or elderly. I'm surprised the health department hasn't shut these guys down.

Best breakfast at Tahoe hands down. The Skileter was fantastic with eggs, potatoes, cheese, and spices. The biscuits and gravy were also excellent. Great service and friendly conversation. Highly recommended.

After reading a couple reviews here, I'm glad to know it just wasn't me!

To sum it up:
- One of the servers was a giant bitch.
- One of the servers was nice.
- We were (barely) seated by the bitchy one, but thankfully served by the nice one.
- Food was decent. Basic diner style, nothing particularly memorable.
- Prices were unreasonably high for breakfast ($10 for eggs and toast?)
- It was strangely quiet inside, perhaps not to upset the bitchy server and have her go on a rampage.

The only things I regret are: 1) not seeing a bear inside attack the bitchy server (as the pictures on the wall prove there was actually a bear that came into the restaurant!) and 2) not ordering a milkshake, they looked tasty.

I experienced the most traumatic moment of my life at this cafe.

On Sunday, my husband and I walked in with another couple to Old Tahoe Cafe and seated ourselves at the counter. The waitress, Julija, who turns out to be the owner, gave the other couple (who sat right next to us) menus and walked passed us. When she returned she took their order and ignored us. As the other couple passed us their menus, she returned and GRABBED the menus from our hands, stating that she could not take our order. When we asked her why, she told us to get up and wait at the door. We were humiliated . . . everyone in the restaurant just stopped and looked at her. The only difference btwn myself and the other couple is that I have darker skin. Customer service and hospitality is HUGE part of what makes an eatery successful. Julija, THE OWNER treated us with such disrespect. I know that prejudice still exists, but I cannot nor should anyone, patronize a business like this one.

The Old Tahoe Cafe is a Tahoe tradition. Having grown up half the year in Homewood, I have so many great memories of coming here for breakfast before hitting the slopes or a day on the lake. I still come here for breakfast or lunch when I'm up in the mountains. Be sure to get the (real!) milkshakes in the summer...they're amazing!

Yes, the service is slow and you may have to wait for a table during peak hours, but it's worth it for a slice of Americana!
