Wings just aren't what they used to be. Maybe its cause I order when its not thursday when its their official wing night but when I spend more than $12 for wings and they are chewy and tough to eat I get very disappointed. Hard to find a good wing place around here but I have to say Pizza Hut and Dominos wings have been better lately which is a shame.
Review Source:If you're a local college student, I'm certain this spot is tailor made for you. Â That is, unfortunately, exactly the reason it isn't my scene. Â The food is mediocre at best, but that's only assuming you actually get what's listed on the menu (apparently the wait staff either don't know the menu or they have made changes to their offerings since the menus were printed -- either way, I don't appreciate being charged extra for a salad when the menu clearly says the salad is included with the entree.) Â Even more unfortunate, this place appears to be the only place you can get something besides fast food after about 9 p.m. in this town. Â Given my three experiences there at this point, I think I'd just as soon patronize the Wendy's down the street -- less money for better food.
Review Source:Omalleys has the BEST wings in WNC. I was a wing night regular during my college days and always had a blast there. I never really liked much else on the menu but my friend swears by the blackened chicken sandwich.
This is a crowded bar with lots of college kids. If that's not your thing then you may want to consider Bogarts or Nick and Nates. Also, the waitresses are tough so don't scrutinize your service too much. They are most likely full time students that deal with dirty old men, drunk college kids, and Sylva locals on a daily basis so take it easy on them.
You're not going to have great food here, but it's good, solid bar food. Â Add a surprisingly good beer selection, put the game on and it's a pleasant evening. Â I don't like to go here on Thursday, Friday or Saturday when school's in session, but I don't begrudge O'Malley's (or the students) for that. Â Just know what you're going to get.
Review Source:This place is one of the worst places that I have ever been to. The servers are great, but the management is horrendous. If you ever have a receipt with the wrong amount, your better off not saying anything. The owner's wife is a very rude women so going to the top to get a problem fixed is worthless. Bone Shack has better wings and much better service. Save your money/time and go to a business that cares about its customers
Review Source:Well, I haven't been to O'Malley's in a couple of years so maybe I'm not qualified to write this review. Â But...memories. Â This place has been around a long time -- I walked in '99 and it was there the entire time I was at WCU (the memories are a little hazy, but I think that's right). Â I never thought of it as a dive bar -- just a good bar. Â Always had great wings. Â Sounds like they still do. Â
I went in there once after the "magic hour" that one chick talks about in her review, and the kitchen was closed. Â So I offered the waitress $100 to open the kitchen back up and make me some wings. Â She made it happen, then only charged me the regular cost of a dozen wings, so I gave her the difference between that and the $100 as a tip. Â Money talks!
My mom got a cat, asked me what she should call it, so I named it O'Malley. Â
I guess I liked this place a lot. Â Glad to see it's still around.
Best place to go eat for college students in Sylva period. Especially on wing night. They have quite a few flavors and most all of them are great. I ate there nearly every thursday in college. 40 cent wings on Thursday night. It gets crowded realllll early. If you're not there by 530 it's a pretty good wait. Parking has gotten better with the extended gravel lot. Fries are hit and miss, as is the service but, it's always packed on Thursday nights. Awesome wings though!
Review Source:O'Malley's has been in business in Sylva for a long time, and my friends at WCU commit to "wing night" on a weekly basis, with an almost fanatical devotion. Â I take this to mean that they must be doing something right. Â
Unfortunately, I don't share this devotion, and it's not a place I care to frequent. Â They stop serving a significant portion of their menu after a certain time - I want to say that 9 or 10 P.M. is the "magic hour," but it's been almost a year since my last visit, so I could be wrong. Â The last time I visited, the magic hour had passed and we were limited to bar appetizers. Â We had wings that I considered sub-par. Â The mozzarella sticks we ordered were passable, but then again, how hard is it to screw up deep-fried cheese?
I might have a different opinion of O'Malley's if I made it a point to get inebriated on their property. Â I also have never visited when the live shows were going on, and for all I know, those could be very good! Â
Until the day I do those things, I'll say that if you're looking for amazing food, go elsewhere. Â If you're looking for a crowded dive bar, come on over and try it for yourself. Â Just be sure you don't hit the drunk college students stumbling around the middle of the wee parking lot, because I assure you, you'll encounter them every night of the week.
Wether you will like O'Mally's of Sylva or not really depends on why you are thinking of going and who you are.
First, if you think this O'Mally's is the same as the one in Waynesville, it is NOT. The one is Waynesville is for adults looking to have a good time and a nice evening hanging out with friends. Perhaps some good pub food with an Irish flavor. This O'Mally's is more of a sports bar / local hangout / college hangout bar. I guess, if I was still a student at WCU, I would like the place more. But, I am not.
Atmosphere: The establishment is not very clean, it is very loud, smoky...and these issue get worse on the weekend when there is a big game on. This will probably improve when smoking is prohibited in North Carolina restaurants and bars after Jan 1, 2010.
Service: About what you would expect. Pretty nice and polite. Attentive.
Food: Bar food...and not the best at that. It is ok, about what you would expect from a place like this. Probably better after a few beers and if your team is winning.
Bottom line: Sylva is a college and blue collar, working town. O'Malley's reflects this. If this is what you are looking for, O'Malley's will be for you. If not, keep looking...
if your looking for a dirty bar where the old men stare at you as u walk by then o'malley's pub and grill is the place for you! dirty atmosphere...crowded dining and bar area. Â i guess its a good locals bar but since im not from nc im not familiar on how the residents here enjoy dining out cause i ordered a tri-tip sandwich and all i got was a pathetic hoagie roll (not toasted) with one slice of dry tri-tip on my sandwich. no bbq sauce or anything at all just a dry tri-tip sandwich with 9 french fries and a dam pickle!!!! the meal was definitely not worth the price!
Review Source:My all-time favorite restaurant/bar during days of WCU. Â You couldn't ask for better service. Â They always booked decent bands, too. Â It was such an excellent spot to go out after a stressful day of class (ha-ha), hang with friends, drink, appreciate the live music, and kick butt on a pool game or two.
