A dry goods shop that's been around since America's Antebellum Era. There are only so many things in California that old still up and running.

The old counter sits under all sorts of odds and ends with an old stove in the center of the room. The shelves are stacked high with canned goods. Prices were a bit high on just about everything.

Everywhere you walk in the shop signs insist that photography is prohibited and will get you thrown out.

The Onyx Store is one of the few places we could stop going through Walker Pass from Ridgecrest to Kernville, which of course means "bathroom break."  While making purchases, some of the folks in my group inquired about the bathroom and told there's a portable toilet down the road. Every person in my group complained of the porta-john's grossness with no place to wash up. Kind of a bummer if you're ordering sandwiches.

In short, it's worth stopping just to pop through the screen door, stretch your legs, take a turn about the room, staring at the tiled ceiling, and maybe pick up a couple drinks before getting back on the road.

I live up here close to the Onyx Store and have never witnessed cranky women. The have both been nice. Also, you have to understand, these businesses have to pump their water from a well and have their septic tank dug up and pumped out. Flushing the toilet takes 5 gallons of water and if the had every Tom, Dick and Harry using their toilet, the septic tank would have to be pumped every other month and it isn't cheap. About a mile up the road are toilets in the campground.

I love this place! It is super cute and I'm so happy it is open again. I would have said 5 stars but they no longer have public restrooms. Is it even legal to have a restaurant without restrooms?

After purchasing pricey cookies and treats we asked if our child could use the restroom. Cranky lady said no, that had we bought a sandwich it would've been ok. Also, she kept letting us know that there were bushes all around. Oh, thanks?

Talk about a diamond.. ok, maybe not a diamond.. but definitely a gem-of-some-sort - in the rough.  Definitely worth stopping in if you're Hungry and on your way to Kern.  Historical, too!

The historic setting, combined with the friendly service and fresh, delicious food make this deli a winner! We had the turkey on light rye, which included a delicious macaroni salad and fresh homemade cookie. Price was reasonable, and everything was delicious! I highly recommend this spot during a trip to Isabella Lake or Kern River!

Stopped in this historical store looking for a cup of coffee and we were extremely delighted by the eclectic shoppe. Sitting at the one table were two cowboys and a woman eating the delicious smelling soup made there.  (We didn't eat here)

The owner was very friendly, used to own a catering business and has a lot of tea cup sets and goods for sale. I certainly was not expecting to add to my collection of tea cups here but she had a beautiful set I couldn't refuse.

The place is a small piece of history in a beautiful setting and well worth stopping in.

As you drive down Hwy 178, taking in the scenic green rolling hills nearby the Sequoia National Park, one might just expect to find a place like this.

The building was built in 1861, making it one of the oldest stores in California.

As you enter the store, you're greeted by antique copper pots and pans (not for sale says Ms. Honeycutt - I assumed).  A cast iron fireplace sits in the middle of the store.  A big round table to enjoy a sandwich or a cup of tea.  You can cozy up with a good book (from the expansive book shelf) and a nice beverage from your choice of a wide selection of mugs (for store use only - not for sale).

This general store is like your grandma's kitchen meet antique store meet cozy coffee shop.

Ms. Honeycutt has been collecting teas for about 10 years now.  If you ask for tea she might just give you a teabag (she's a little busy at times) but ask her about her loose leaf teas.  Her cookies are out of this world for only 50 cents each.  Wish I lived closer so I can sample her sandwiches and other foods.

Below is an article and links to some pictures of the store.  Ms. Honeycutt has (and still is) worked really hard to get this historic store going.
