We really enjoy their breakfast menu, especially when we head up to Boulder Junction for a nice ride on the BATS bike trail. Â Also love their soup (both the turkey with wild rice and the butternut squash are fantastic- my parents, son, hubby, and I all crave them!) Â If we're there for lunch, I usually order a bowl of soup with a sandwich (grilled cheese is my favorite) and I've always left full and happy. Â If visiting Boulder Junction during the busy summer months, stop in early or late (say 11:00 or 1:30ish) for lunch so you can get taken care of in a speedy manner.
Review Source:On a recent visit here, the food was..ok. Â My husband had the country fried steak, only complaint was the tablespoon of country gravy on top. Â I had eggs Benedict...the portion was quite small for the price and no side was included. Service was ok as well, wasn't too busy when we were there.
Review Source:I didn't want to write this. I tried reaching the owner of the Outdoorsman and chef several times. She was out when I was there and never returned my calls. The Outdoorsman was a real disappointment. The owner/ chef writes on the menu that she is celiac and I thought "Great. She understands." Despite the fact that they advertise the restuarant as expert in gluten-free cooking in the local paper, my hash browns and bacon were burned. I do ask for extra crispy but these were inedible. The waitress told me by way of explanation "that it was very difficult to cook gluten-free". Yet others do just fine. They did try to cook the hash order again. They gave up on the bacon and said they would comp it. There was less than half the second time, so it appeared that they took the burned part off and cooked the rest. The top was crispy, but the bottom was soggy and very greasy. Â Even after I told her that I teach gluten-free cooking and write a blog about the places I try, there was little attempt to communicate or satisfy the customer. This was more that a disappointing breakfast. I don't go out to eat for breakfast that often because there are not that many places that really understand about contamination. But if you are going to claim to be an expert , you need to deliver taste, too. Â Â
Another concern was that when I called the night before, I was told that the there was gluten-free bread and the upcharge was $1.00. I considered that reasonable. However, when I asked for gluten-free bread (toast), I was told that they had GF English muffins. Since I had not had good luck with GF English muffins (usually dry), I hesitated. I decided to order it anyway and try it. The Gf English muffin came and it appeared to be grilled but was gummy inside. It actually tasted fairly good and if it had been properly toasted, I think it would have been a treat. Then I found out that I had been charged $2.00 extra without notice for the underdone english muffin. I later asked what brand the English muffin was because I wanted to try it at home. The cook was too busy to share that with me. I felt that I should let folks know so others aren't disappointed.
Have only had breakfast at the Outdoorsman, but did that more times than I can count as it's conveniently in downtown Boulder off the snowmobile trail and serves a delicious, if pricey, breakfast. Charming interior and welcoming service are trumped only by the gigantic Belgian waffle covered in strawberries, whipped cream, and ice cream. Breakfast of champions and well worth a visit for an artery clogging way to start your day.
Review Source:Visited for lunch, first time.  Once seated, slow to get server who apologized for not knowing we had been seated.  Food was very good.  Returned tonight for dinner about 6:30 p.m., not busy, waited a  few minutes to be seated.  Once seated, 7 minutes before we were acknowledged by a gal who gave us menus and water.  We waited, and waited, and waited and a finally a young man came by our table en route to somewhere else and turned and said he would be with us soon.  Well . . . . . . .  we continued to wait and finally got up and left the restaurant.  Too bad, they do not have the help to run their dining room efficiently.  The meal itself at lunch  was very good today.  It is the reason we  had returned to give dinner a try.  We will not go back again.  Unless they get their dining room managed correctly, anticipate long waits for menus, your waiter/waitress,  and food to arrive.  VERY slow.  Do not recommend.
Review Source:Okay, this is a tough review to write. I mean, I learned to swim and water ski up here as a kid, I love it up here. But there are so many good and not so good things, about The Outdoorsman.
The place itself is architecturally wonderful and charming. Inside, the decor is charming. But it needs a good cleaning. It really does. And the seating could be improved, or better yet; don't seat everyone in a clump. Especially when there is ample room throughout.
As to the menu, if anyone reading this has any tendencies toward vegetarianism, don't eat here. There are, at best, 3 entrees that are options for you. The remainder of the menu contains numerous game offerings.
For example, one evening we ordered a pumpkin soup and the baked veggie lasagna. The soup had no flavor and the veggie lasagna was mostly mushrooms and green peppers with cheese. We were disappointed, especially considering the prices.
Despite that, we tried them for a late brunch one Saturday. My guy had a skillet breakfast with eggs, ham, and spuds. It was better than his evening meal. I got the regular french toast with sugar free syrup and I have to say that my spine tends to stiffen when my servers thumbs are all over my breakfast and plate. The sugar free syrup was handed to me; literally, and it was so loaded with fingerprints that the FBI would have had no problem identifying past handlers.
And even still, our hopes were that the coffee would be great coffee. Nope, we received bitter, stone cold coffee in one of those white plastic servers that looked like it had been passed around the restaurant all morning.
The restaurant hosts and servers are pleasant and seem to want to make your dining experience a nice one, so, if that's the case, as I believe it truly is, read this Yelp review, and consider putting some of it toward constructive change. Please.
Had a late breakfast here today and it was outstanding. Â Wife had the stuffed french toast and loved it. Â i had the Mexican Skillet. Â Everything was very good. Â Service was good, food was terrific, and the ambiance was wonderful. Â Even better was the bill. Â This place was so reasonable to boot. Â I would go back for sure.
Review Source:Restaurants of this caliber in the North Woods are hard to come by- make that impossible to come by. For a Chicago foodie, The Outdoorsman is a shining beacon in a sea of supper clubs. (Not that there's anything wrong with supper clubs... on occasion.)
My family has a lake house in the UP and I've spent half my life running around those woods, but now that I'm a little older and food-wiser I find myself breathing a sigh of relief that there is a restaurant around like the Outdoorsman. The food is simply spectacular.
The menu choices are varied and sophisticated, and it's hard to narrow it down to just one entree. The chef makes good use of local game and elevates it to a gourmet level. The last time I was there I had the elk, and I'm still raving about it (a year later). The ostrich Wellington appetizer is a must eat, and the crostini with candied walnuts, goat cheese and lavender honey is something I've tried many times to recreate at home. It's just never the same. And the wine list! My lord, don't even get me started on their incredible wine list. It's... well, incredible! There is a perfect pairing for everything on the menu and more. Their breakfasts are also out of this world. Perfect carb load if you're planning on riding the bike trail.
This place is so unexpected in its tiny Wisconsin tourist town environment, but if you appreciate fine food you absolutely cannot miss it.
I have eaten at the Outdoorsman at least once every time I visit the Northwoods (usually twice a year). Â The food is excellent and the wine list is great as well. Â The butternut squash soup with blue cheese will be my request for my last meal, should I ever be put on death row. Seriously, it is awesome. Â We have mainly gone there for dinner, but have been there for Breakfast. Â I think I may have eaten both Breakfast and Dinner in the same day there before.
Review Source:My sister and I had lunch here today; good sandwiches arrived quickly. Â Getting a bill, however, was a chore. Â It looked like there were only 2 servers and no bussers for the whole place and the customers kept on comin'. Â After being told 4 times that we'd get our bill, we headed up to the counter and paid the tab. Â Note to management...you need to keep staff on through leaf season. Â Cut back in late October.
Review Source:YUMMY!!!! OMG it smelled soooooo good when we walked in... just like chocolate. They had obvioulsy just baked their pastries & cookies and they were out cooling... but OMG it smelled sooooo yummy!!!!! I don't eat desert but I could have at that moment!!!
Anyway, we stopped in just for quick bite... ok my initial reaction... "WTF, it is almost 90 degrees, and where is the AC?????"
After I got past that... :P
It is small & quaint - the food is quite tasty!!! I was impressed considering my expectation was very low considering, up north, u never can expect to much, cuz nothing is like it is in chicago... Â nothing. But this was REALLY GOOD!!!! Â I had ice tea, and I was little a little disappointed, no splenda, but ok.... i know that i being REALLY PICKY... LOL but anyway... definitely a must eat. Exspecially when u consider the alternatives in Boulder Junction...
oh yes.... just FYI we were here on a Monday - today, and apparently they close early at 3 on Mondays... but everything closes early or seems to be closed on Mondays up here....
