annnnndddd Now I Know What All the Hullabaloo is All About.

Yes this place is worth the drive.
Yes you must GET TO THIS PLACE if you visit the Joshua Tree area.
Yes the music was awesome and not too loud while eating. We were totes stoked on the band, Chappo, and so was our 3 1/2 month old baby.

Yes the food is delicious and the menu extensive.
Yes the Old West vibe will put you in a good mood.

There is outside dining as well but we wanted to see the music inside. The ginger beer and Maker's Mark I had hit the bullseye as well. I will m-m-m-most definitely return to this desert hotspot of love, art, and deliciousness.

about five miles of windy desert road northwest from Yucca Valley you discover Pappy and Harriet's!

Biker bar with a good mix of locals and tourists. tatted up waitresses that partied a little too hard in their twenties. Barbecue food and beer; old license plates and stuffed elk heads on the wall.

big big place, pool tables, music stage, outdoor area. had the pulled pork sandwich and it was pretty delish.

out back there's a motel, and along side of that there's this little fake ghost town thing, like Frontierland at Disneyland only a little more low-rent. They do a Wild West themed show and then pass around a hat. There's hayrides, gift shop, stuff like that There's a guy who charges a dollar for pictures of this huge-ass parrot. It's all a little weird and slightly smacks of desperation, but it's worth strolling through.

but the restaurant -- cool place. just get there early! don't make the mistake we did and get there at 10pm expecting food. they will have already stopped serving.

Um, my mouth is starting to water as I recall our last meal there.

Stopped here for lunch on the way back from the Integratron in Landers. Hands down one of the best rack of ribs I've ever had. The meat on the baby back ribs was literally falling off the bone. The ice tea came in huge mason jars. The cheese fries definitely clogged my arteries but in the most satisfying way possible.

(The only not so good thing we tried were the mac and cheese - it was un-flavorful and frankly, inedible)

It's a bit pricey and some may say a little tacky in atmosphere, but when you're in the desert and you have the primal desire to eat and eat well, this joint definitely satisfies all of that.

Keep an eye out for big acts playing there on the sly.

Great place for dinner and drinks. Staff was fast and attentive. Strong drinks and two billiard tables in the back. Would recommend the porterhouse and short ribs for sure. Polish off with a "Cadillac Summer" cocktail. Plenty of space to roam around and the bands are loud and fun. 5 Stars.

    I'm a big fan of Pappy & Harriet's.

I traveled out there to listen to one of my favorite surf bands: Pollo Del Mar.

    It was a great gig!

A very cool western dude ranch sort of atmosphere out in the wilds of Johua Tree country.

You'll see the stars and have a great time at this cowpoke dive out in the boonies.

Fun place. We came before opening which was cool because I hate crowds. Some decent places to eat and take pics but it is a tourist trap.

    RV parking is plentiful.

Super cute place with an awesome check in offer, pretty decent customer service and a lot of campiness to make this girl smile. I hope I can make a trip back out there again to catch the amazing concerts they play host to. If my honky-tonk radar is right, this place should be pretty darn awesome at night.

Unfortunately when I went, it was in the daytime, but we did have a chance to sit and eat. The food here is okay. I ordered the Catfish and while it does not touch a typical Southern recipe, they did manage to get a meaty cut and cook it half decently. I'm just not sure why they felt that they had to slice it the way they did. Catfish has natural lines of its own that helps it cook all the way through easily and does not need any extra help. Also, I was not too elated when I was brought a burnt piece of fish. I had them send that mess back. What annoyed me a bit was that the waitress seemed annoyed that I would not eat it. I know they were really busy, but that is no reason to give anyone burnt food or expect them to eat it.

All-in-all, I hope to give Pappy and Harriet's another chance because it really is a cool little place with a lot of charm... and I really dig the big moose head. Next time though, I think I'll come after dark for a bit of honky-tonk fun.

Yes this place has bikers, cowboys, and German tourists.  You might even spot the occasional pirate looking person if you stay long enough. It's also located in a quaint authentic western town that was used to film cowboy movies.  Some of the locals actually came to the area as gold prospectors and never left. It reminds me of that ride at Disneyland called Big Thunder Mountain.  If they would have had a cafe at the end of the ride, this would be it,

The food is not bad, but who comes here for the food? there is usually a great local artist playing music and plenty of interesting things to check out while you sip your drink from a mason jar.

This is a must see if you're in the area visiting.  Bring your six shooter and ten gallon hat. Pioneer town is cool.  It's like the land that time forgot.  Just don't stick around after dark.  I think the hills there have eyes :0

this place very cool! from moment walk inside, have very fun!

very nice lady come and seat us right away, and we sit in table beneath mounted moose head and other animal head. lot of picture on walls too. recognize one of willie nelson who play near neanderthal cave back in July of 28987 BCE. had very good time that night and also introduce to beer tusk! But I digress.

food very good, but so big! had biker chili burger with cheese fry. ate whole thing and thought that i might actually explode. fortunate i did not. drank sweet tea with food, also very good. music play very enjoy. listen to neil young while eat. another classic.

after eat lunch, go to bar and play new modern man game call Pool. very interest, and  find out that Pool and Swimming Pool two different thing, and can no swim in pool table. very confuse.

overall, very great. reason give four star instead of five star is because waitress not very attentive and only time she smile was when i suffer after eat too much. why people so enjoy when neaderthal in misery???

will definite come back when in area again!

So I showed up for St. Patrick's Day with a buddy of mine.  Got the chili which I thought was fantastic.  Additionally i got the ribs to eat there and take some back for lunch the next day.  The ribs are why this place got 4 stars, everything else about this place is great with a unique atmosphere to boot, but I just wasn't feeling the ribs.  I'm sure others have had different experiences, but I can't review those now can I?  I'll definitely be back, but I'll probably mix it up and get something else after I get another bowl of chili of course.

Take one Patrick Swayze movie, mix in a dash of True Blood and a sprinkle of Easy Rider and you have Pappy's.

We were in Palm Springs and decided to make a trip out to Joshua Tree.  A lady at our hotel said that we needed to make a stop at this place on our way home.  We got there too early for the evening festivities (Kenny Loggins) but we had a late lunch, which consisted of margaritas in mason jars, chicken sandwiches and cheese fries (potato skins.)  The food was pretty rocking for a roadhouse bar.

We were a little nervous hitting this place in cutesy hiking outfits, but it is not as divey as my friend made it out to be.  There were motorcycle groups, but also musicians, families, kids, baby boomers and random bar wenches.  I felt completely comfortable and the staff was super sweet.

After lunch, we walked around the old western city that is set up on the back of the property.  Apparently, they still film western type movies here.  For some random reason, I also encountered a parrot in a cage and a pig that was dying for a good petting.  I'm not sure how any of this stuff goes together, but I was not bored.

If you get a chance to visit this part of town, pappy's needs to be on your radar.  It is wakadoo, but in a good way!

Well, I've been here several times, but this review is strictly for last night. We went up to see Kenny Loggins perform with his new band. It was set up outside in the back. The venue is great. The problem was the sound. I heard they rented the equipment from somewhere, well, it absolutely sucked. After four songs, fans were complaining, even yelling out that we couldn't hear them sing and the bass was w a y to loud!  It was just awful, and none of the P&H staff did anything to try and rectify the situation. A ten minute break would have appreciated to see if the staff could try and do something, but, instead the band just kept on playing and people started leaving.
--The hamburgers were ordered from the outside grill were disgusting. The meat was warm to cold and the buns hard and cold.  Gross.

I went here on a Saturday night...what a fun place right in the middle of nowhere! It's definitely a quaint little gem in the desert.

The food was good. I had the steak, as suggested by our server, Chris (thank you!!!) and we all shared a few plates of parmesan fries...OMG, yes! I don't remember what the rest of my friends had, as we slammed a few beers and alcoholic libations so my memory is a bit of a blur.

What I DO remember is our server! It was a busy night and there were 4 of us there ready to party. Not only was Chris attentive but he was so helpful and SOO hilarious! He definitely made an impression on us and made the whole experience at Pappy & Harriet's THAT much better. Thank you, Chris!

Thank you, bartender. And thanks for the memories! :)

any restaurant on my bucket list is doomed to disappoint but this one fell shorter than most. still, I have to assume some of the responsibility since the wife and i strolled into this yuppified, wanna be tourist-trap-biker-bar (yeah, struck me as kind of an odd aspiration too) and ordered fish -- stray too far from burgers and you're probably asking for trouble.

on the way out the little woman said she expected blackened catfish (see photo) to be spicier.  it was nearly an hour later when we got back to our room (we were weekending in PALM DESERT) before i jumped on the net and showed her the menu.  here's what it says :

CATFISH SANDWICH -- fluffy white catfish rolled in cornmeal batter, lightly fried, with lettuce, tomato and chipotle mayonnaise on french bread.

pretty sure ours was heavily fried, probably in some very old motor oil judging by the color.  the spuds were nasty.

turned out it was a truly bad idea to eat at  PAPPY & HARRIET's sober.

This place is amazing. Only a few hours outside of LA and I felt like I was in a whole other world. Live county music and cowboy boots. Really nice people and a great atmosphere. I got a beer (which comes in a mason jar) and the catfish sandwich which was awesome. The live band was cool and I think someone was having a wedding out back. If I ever decide to drive out to the desert again, I will definitely be stopping here again.

Pappy & Harriets, what a spot!
For desert folks who drink a lot!
    Live music, pool, and BBQ,
banjos, drums, and more it's true!
Don't go if you are in a rush,
Wait for a table most nights, you must!
But oh, what a rare find this is
So hop on a horse with your missus,
Sip a beer, then cut a rug
the twist, the hop and jitterbug,
Hipsters, cowboys, meth heads, and vets,
all gather here without a fret
to sing and dance and eat some food,
what a bunch of lovely dudes,
in the middle of a pile of sand
like a time warp old west coyote wasteland
this place is haunted by ghosts
Billy the Kid and Harriet toast
beneath the full moon out in the back
whenever you eat a big full rack
of BBQ ribs, then twist and shout
all the ghosts of the desert come out,
don't be scared, no please don't cry
just go to this place for a good old time!

Tried to go last Tuesday. Umm, don't do that. They're CLOSED! Wednesday too. You've been warned. Went back on a Monday and not only were they open but they were PACKED! Seems everybody goes the Pappy and Harriets. Young, old, jet setters and hippies.. Nice decor and appropriately themed bricabrac adorn the walls and ceiling. Nice big bar area with pool tables in the front and seating for a lot of peeps in the dining area. There's a giant stage in the back and it just happened to be Open Mic night with "Ted" as your host. Both Ted and his delivery are a little off but it actually works for him and I enjoyed his Schtick. We only stayed for the first two performers (after Ted the M.C.) and had to go because it's a little ways back and we had to be up before 5 for work. Damn work always getting in the way of a good time.

Dinner and a show!!!!! That was the show, now about the dinner!!

Out waitress comes up in her cute little glasses with chips (generic) and salsa and the salsa is REALLY good!! I settle on a diet coke for my beverage since it's a long-ish drive back "Home". No cell service prompts a check for WiFi and DIng theres free Wifi so I can check in on Yelp! Upon checking in I find a bonus for doing so (Thanks P&H).
While the entire menu looks fantastic I decide to order big and throw caution to the wind. The Cowboy Combo it is. 1/2 a rack of Baby Backs and Santa Maria Style tri tip. Served tonight with steamed broccoli and garlic mash with gravy. (see pic)

Broccoli... slight hint of lemon. Quite good!

Garlic Mash.. fantastic! Needed no salt and the gravy was definitely not from a jar.

RIbs.. Perfectly cooked!! Comes off the bone easily but doesn't fall off into your lap! Sauced perfectly and I'd have to say the highlight of the meal!

Tri tip.. delivered rare as ordered and had good flavor and was pretty darn good but didn't really wow me. Maybe I was spoiled from the ribs.

My buddy got the Pork Chop and raved about it. It looked great and was the size of softball.

His kid got the burger and said it was "Awesome" and was just slightly smaller than a Volkswagon.

These people are NOT afraid to put some food on a plate! Go get some!

    Recap:

Fantastic food and lots of it.
Live entertainment (which I hear makes for a BUSY Sunday afternoon)
    My waitress was HOT!
Did I mention the salsa was really good?!

If you get a chance to go here and don't go. Make sure to kick yourself!

such a gem in the middle of the desert! had a blast here - good music and good drinks, and mostly good food. Holy crap their chili is out of this world! You have to try it even if you're not a fan of chili. It's chili on a whole other level. We also got the baby back ribs which were also incredibly tasty.

The only downside to our experience is that the hostess was sooooo bitchy. Her name is Marisa. If management is reading this you should fire her. But of course, not enough for me to leave a bad review because the restaurant as a whole is amazing!

Our Elite Tours tour guide highly recommended Pioneertown for dinner so away we went.  We arrived on President's Day, 30 minutes past our reservation but they still seated us right away even though others were standing in line (I called ahead to let them know we were running late).  That was about the end of our excellent service.

Most of the food was really terrific and the atmosphere is super cool -- (made me feel like it was a scene out of Urban Cowboy or something). If the service by our server had been better, I would have given the restaurant five stars.

    THE GOOD:
My husband and son ordered the top sirloin and they loved it. The kids' chicken fingers were yummy and the ribs were very tasty according to my 8 year-old son who is thin as can be but took down a half-rack of ribs. Chili is very meaty.

Veggie of the night was broccoli with lemon-butter and it was divine - perfectly cooked and seasoned.  Broccoli was second only to the fantastic garlic mashed potatoes and gravy. Seriously, I'd go back just for the mashed potatoes and give the service another shot. The cheese fries were good but the mashed potatoes were the clear winner at our table.

Note, I'm pretty picky about red meat. I like it very lean and tender (e.g., tenderloin or flank steak and lean tri tip).  I ordered the Santa Maria try-tip based on the description of thinly sliced meat. I received three thick slabs of meat. The flavor was yummy, and thank god it was lean, but the texture/cut did not match the description.  Just saying.

We were seated at the back of the restaurant with a partial view of the stage. It was open mike night.  As you might expect, the musical numbers ranged from mediocre to excellent (steel string artist and vocalist were incredible). In my opinion, live music is always a treat and all of us really enjoyed "the show" as we waited for our food and enjoyed our meal.

    THE MEH:
Service was just so-so to poor --due solely to our server. Our server seemed irritated/annoyed from the start and then she appeared to go on a break when we were finished...we waited forever for her to show up with our check.  She did apologize for "disappearing" on us but still...And, I have to give kudos to the other servers for picking up the slack -- they offered us fresh chips and packed up our extra food very nicely.

Food took a really long time to come (we expected this based on other reviews and a big sign at the front desk that says something to the effect that "food cooked on premises takes time". If you have young kids (I do), plan to bring something to entertain them. They do not have coloring placemats or whatnot (at least they weren't offered to us) so unless your kids are good at just sitting and listening to whatever is on stage, you might want to bring something to keep them occupied.

We won't go out of our way again (this is about a 40 minute drive from Palm Springs) to visit this restaurant but if I were ever remotely in the area (e.g., visiting Joshua Tree), I'd go again in a heartbeat...for the mashed potatoes.

We had to wait 2 hours for our table but it didn't matter -- we had some drinks and got to listen to great live music. There's a pretty patio and pool tables as well. You can also walk around Pioneertown while you wait. Originally built as a movie set for Western films and the actors lived in the buildings. Now it's semi-inhabited by artists.

Really good feel to this place. We had a blast. Especially loved seeing the diversity of people (ages, cultures). The food was pretty good, not amazing. But all things considered, definitely a 5 star rating.

Fun and vibrant spot to punctuate a peaceful and relaxing weekend in the desert.

Pappy and Harriets is one of those genuinely cool places people should make the drive towards the middle of nowhere for. Its a dive bar and restaurant with two stages, in doors and out, for live music of all genres, but mostly hipster indie rock and blue grass or country. Of course, the live music is the biggest draw, but its a great place to drop into for a burger and beer, and enjoy the desert landscape.

If you do stay late into the hours and drink your heart's desire, I implore you not to drive the stretch of desert highways, but instead rent a room in their tiny retro motel and sleep it off. If there's no more vacancies, bust out your tent and camp in the parking lot!

But really, the live MUSIC, the Old West aesthetic and the BIKER crews that roll in are the great attractions to Pappy's. Fewer places make me giddy with excitement at the prospect of visiting.

We came here back in October for our wedding anniversary. I'm just now getting around to writing a review because I have honestly been thinking about that steak for the last 5 months. All other steak has been ruined for me. Thanks alot Pappy & Harriet's! I can never fully enjoy a steak again because it will always be a lesser steak. Pappy & Harriet's makes a magical steak: perfectly cooked, tender, wood fired & I believe possibly sprinkled with crack.
Also the ambiance is great, we came back later for some stiff cocktails ( we stayed across the way at the Pioneertown Inn-( that name might be wrong)), friendly locals & out of towners, great band- they're regulars there, and a Rockabilly wedding happening on the same night as our stay which means everyone was dressed appropriately & to the nines- oh, except me since I didn't get the memo.

But seriously, go for the steak, everything else is just a bonus. Or you know what? If you like steak, maybe don't go, because it will never be the same again.

Such an awesome bar and restaurant located in the middle of the Mojave desert.  P&H is more than just locals. People from all over the US come here when their in J-Tree or LA.  Even Kenney Chesney and Charlie Robison sing a song about "Pionertown People!"

I usually go on Friday night with my friends and we'll get a hotel room right there on the premises, stumbling distance out the back of the bar.  The place is all wood, with  a large dance floor, pool table rooms, a large bar and plenty of seating.  It's dark and smoky without the smoke.  There is western decor and flare all over the place and there is a great mix of country music,  Most nights you can find live music until 1 or 2 AM.

The green chili burger is a MUST and their chili is great too - NO BEANS!  All the draft beer is served out of mason jars as well giving it more of a western feel.  There is a large beer garden out back as well, reminding me of places I would frequent back in Texas.

This place is awesome! A must stop if you are in Joshua Tree.

The food is delicious. We had the cowboy combo and shared the ribs (OMG), chicken, Mac n' cheese, and mashed potatoes. Everything was great, though the ribs were especially tasty.

Not only is the food excellent, but it is a great atmosphere. From 5-7 they have a local bluegrass band. They were awesome! Starting at 8 they had a fun band from LA. It was great free live music. Also, the people watching is fantastic.

I am only giving 4 stars because while we were still enjoying our meal, our server abruptly asked us to leave because the table was reserved for a 8pm party. We hadn't even had a chance to look at the dessert menu.

We stopped in Pappy and Harriet's on our way out to Joshua Tree for a drink and a snack.  Like most of the people in the place (I assume), I had heard about Pappy and Harriet's on No Reservations.

We arrived around 1:00 PM on a Saturday and the place was packed.  We took a seat at the bar and shortly had drinks in hand.  I was a bit disappointed in their beer selection, macro-brews mostly.  They did have Lagunitas IPA on tap though, so that was good for me.  My companions all went with bloody marys.  They all thought they were way too spicy and I don't believe any of them finished their drink.  The bartender mentioned the person who made the bloody marys often uses too much horseradish, so if you don't like your bloody mary spicy, be aware of that.

Along with our drinks we shared an order of their chili nachos which were absolutely outstanding.  The nacho chips were huge and crispy (homemade?) and the chili was delicious with big chunks of mesquite smoked beef.

All in all, Pappy and Harriet's seems like a pretty fun place.  I'd like to return some time in the evening to see some live music, seems like that would be a blast.

Great place! Its a very unique restaurant, with great food and amazing ambience.
Pappy & Harriet's is located in Pioneertown, about 10mins drive from Yucca Valley. Pioneertown use to be a movie set for a lot of western movies. Although, no movies are filmed there anymore there are western-style festival and its great.
The restaurant is rustic from top to bottom and always packed, so make sure you make a reservation!
Their menu is very much Southwestern cuisine and its amazing! (try their nachos!)
They always have live music and if you are keen on dancing head on over to the dance floor.
If you live in this area or you're just passing by, make sure to check out Pappy and Harriets!

It's worth the drive from the Valley for the steaks.

I've been here a few times, and the food was good--WAY better than I expected. Since it's the only game in town, they could easily get away with less. But the steaks are good. I enjoyed the meaty chili--a lot. The burger was one of the best I've had in the area. I think cooking it outside on the flame has a lot to do with it.

They have some good shows, and I've seen a couple. Get there early, though, if you want to be near the stage. Only some of the dining room has a view of the performers. But you can hear it from anywhere, and there are screens  showing you the stage if you are eating out of view.

I recommend coming just for dinner. Sit outside and enjoy the amazing starry skies of Joshua Tree.

A seriously down-to-earth stop on a desert road in the middle of nowhere.
Strong musical heritage presents a stage in the middle of a multi-room and patio complex.

Yes the food is good and the drinks are real; but you can get that plenty of places.
Three things set Pappy & Harriets apart from the usual roadhouse:

    1) The hospitality. We felt truly welcome. Start to finish.

2)The Place: Would love to be able to see a show here on a hot sprawling full house night.

    3) Truly a local spot. People knew one another and were happy about that. Great mix of old, young, hipster, hippies, bikers and just plain folks.

I'll be back next time in the high desert

    Ambiance:
Cool old west theme bar in a middle of nowhere.

    Service:
Came at 1pm on a Saturday. There are several areas you can sit - bar, dining area and outside. We chose to sit inside and even though it was crowded, our server was nice and both our drinks and food came out fast.

    Food:
I ordered Chili Cheese Fries and BF ordered Catfish sandwich. It was way too much food for us two. Their Chili Cheese Fries could easily feed 3 people, their Catfish sandwich 2. I really liked the Chili Cheese Fries. It had big chunks of grilled Tri Tip and perfect amount of cheese and ranch. BF's Catfish sandwich came with Mac & Cheese on the side so I kept stealing that and had it Chili Mac & Cheese style. So decadent, so fattening and ridiculously good.

    Cost Performance:
About $35 (including tax and tip) for both meal plus a beer and an iced tea. Considering the quantity and taste, I think the prices are reasonable.

We drove out to this ghost town call the "Pioneertown". It felt like we were in the Wild Wild West movie! This town was made in the 1940's, now it's meant for tourist to take pictures.

Who drinks in the middle of nowhere?! We do! Boyfriend and I got invited to hang out with a couple of friends in the desert since her family owns a property in Landers. We happen to find this place opened and still serving food and drinks. I guess most tourist come here to eat their famous food. Alcoholic drinks were served in small jars as soft drinks and teas were served in a bigger jar. The bartender is very sweet and nice. She knew we were all from out of town by the way we were dressed haha...and for the boyfriend and I being the only Asians (boy did we feel like we did not belong there, lol)

We experienced their alcoholic drinks only since we are all on our mini vacay and we had a lot of food back the house to cook. Got to try their yummy tequila sunrise. Way better than their Whiskey Sour because it was a bit more stronger. Cheapest snack on their menus is their Chips and Salsa! Oh yeah! You cannot go wrong with that when you are buzzin' it. :)

There are pool tables, a random piano and a disc player! Disc player! Now that's old school!!! This is a pretty cool place to chill, explore and talk to people who are not from where you are from. You get to know their lifestyle here and how different it is living in the desert.

I recommend tourist to check this place out if you are hungry or just thirsty, that is...if you don't mind the hot weather. By the way, it's pretty cool inside :)
