I came to pappy's last night for the pride event. I take out my ID, which is a military ID, because I do not drive, hence no drivers license. The door man stares at it and continues to stare, looking confused. Most people don't see them regularly I guess, so I told him to flip it over, my birthdate is on the back.
He thens asks me if I have another ID he can see. I tell him I don't. He says he needs to see another ID......... -.-
I told him its a military ID, issued by the military, and that he shouldn't need to see another form of ID.
His exact words were, "we'll you know this is just one of the ID's..."
Then I cut him off and said no this is not "one of those ID's" this is a card issued by the federal government, the United States military.
Most people would take my ID and thank me for serving for their country. Not tell me I can't come in.
Pappy's should learn to hire people with more respect for their service members and for their country. Not hire some uneducated asshole and put him in the doorway.
I was visiting SLO for a conference and our company sponsored meal was at Pappy McGregor's. Â You know what that means, right? Â Free beer and free food! Â Woo hoo!
We were automatically provided two very delicious appetizers. Â The garlic fries were your standard issue minced garlic French fries served nice and hot the way fries should be. Â The other, a piled high plate of the Pub Nachos with carnitas. Â Yum! Since we all had to share with a huge table, there was just enough to go around and make our tummies rage with hunger.
Â
Time to drink! Â They were all out of Firestone DBA so I opted for the server's next recommendation - Hurricane Deck Double IPA. Â Holy crap this is some damn good beer! Â Smooth, refreshing and strong as heck!
The structure of our meal was timed so we'd all have to order at the same time. Â Although the wait was a little long, it gave us some valuable networking time with The Bobs. Â I didn't go crazy and try to order the most expensive thing on the menu. And I didn't get shit faced drunk and make an ass of myself. Â Yay! Â But I did enjoy a few ice cold beers and had a freakin' awesome Mushroom Black n Blue burger.
Â
The mushroom black & bleu burger was perfectly cooked medium well and seasoned with Cajun spices, topped with delicious bleu cheese crumbles, with the usual lettuce, tomatoes, and onion sitting on top of a fluffy brioche bun. Â Mmm..this one fine burger!
Our group's waitress was very friendly and very helpful. Â She took our orders and drink refills like a champ. Â She definitely kicked butt for having a deal with such a large group. Â Overall, Pappy McGregor's was a great experience and will definitely come here again next time I'm in town.
Cheers!
Stopped here for a quick bite before headed to the PAC for a show with the a husband. What a find! Got a very disappointing beer but more than made up for it with the burgers. I got the Blarney burger, and the Husband got the Blue burger, both served with garlic fries. Hearst ranch beef cooked medium and served on a toasted brioche bun, they were both perfect. Can't wait to come back and try the lobster Mac and cheese.
Review Source:All in all it isn't a bad Irish Pub. The food was better than I expected and way above average for bar food. The place is well decorated, although not really sure about the whole scottish kilt/irish theme. We went with a group of about 25 and they didn't have a table big enough for all of us but they did everything they could to make us comfortable. Â If you are staying at the Holiday Inn across the street this would be a great bar to visit.
Review Source:We were really excited to (finally!) try out Pappy's after all the glowing reviews on yelp.
FAIL #1. Waited 30-40 minutes before ordering at the bar- never got table service.
FAIL #2. A word about jalapeños to the cook. Remove the seeds, then use. Repeat after me, remove the seeds, then use. Too hot to enjoy.
FAIL #3. Nachos tasted like they were made with room temp. campbells cream of mushroom. WTF, Pappy?
Beers: Excellent.
Recommend to others? Not after this experience.
There was a live band playing but no room for dancing. Zero- we saw some women trying to dance standing next to their tabe- and we had to dance in the aisle/hallway leading to the tables.
Word to those thinking of going? Vote with your dollars, guys. If it sucks, save your bucks. I really hope this was an off day for them (Friday Night, 8:30pm), but, Really?
That's the best you can do?
I've been here a few times, it's right next to my house. Â They have $3 beers, well drinks and fireballs for students all, day every day, enough said! or at least they did in 2012. Â good beer selection, locals and a few Irish ones, smithicks, magners cider, Guinness mixes. Â food is good I had the ribs first and they were pretty good, first time I've had ribs in awhile. Â we had garlic fries once too they were pretty good, heavy on the garlic. Â and a good size. Â great atmosphere. Â I haven't been there late night but I reckon it'd be a great alternative to creekside. Â they are going to start having live music thur-sunday or something like that tue-sunday, idk. but if they have $3 drinks for students, that's a winner right there. No pitchers though. Â we watched the super bowl there, i've been there a few times to watch a game since I only have antenna tv.
Review Source:MUCH better than I ever would have guessed! I had the hot wings and boy were they SPICY! I think they may have been some of the hottest wings I have ever tried. After two wings I had to take a breather and the spice was more bearable after they cooled down a bit. Good thing I am such a big fan of really spicy wings! I also had a salad and got steak in it. The steak was out of this world!
Review Source:Best veggie burger I have ever had. Hands down. Jalapeno burger with veg patty. Perfect balance of spice. Amazing choice of cheese. Not to mention it is gigantic. Enjoy. Thank me later. Drink with Firestone DBA. Awesome, friendly staff as well. The girls wear cute school-girl uniforms.
Review Source:This is a very nice pub. The atmosphere is great. Very nice looking inside and out. The happy hour specials are cheap and there are deals if you have a student ID. I had the pub nachos which were very tasty and filing. Also had a few beers. Very good selection. The service was great. Can not wait to return. Can't believe I have not been here before.
Review Source:Awesome place - good food, friendly staff, and conveniently located across the street from the Holiday Inn Express. Which means stumbling distance! Â The wait for a table wasn't very long and they have two cool bar areas to hang out in while you wait. (it was a little too cold for the outside fire pit!)
Their oysters are really fresh. I got the Lobster Mac & Cheese ($18.95) which was really delicious. There were huge claw pieces of lobster and it comes with some tasty pesto bread. Â I could barely make a dent in the mac & cheese - it was a really generous portion and it was super rich. Â I recommend you get an order for the table and share it. We will definitely be back next time we're in town!
Not a bad place to stop over for a drink or food. Prices are a bit high, but they have specials that usually cut the prices in half depending on the day. The pub tacos are good, I enjoyed the shrimp ones in specific. They don't do blended drinks so be aware, but they have most everything else. Not bad, worth a stop to try it out and see the awesome interior and patio.
Review Source:We came in late on a Tuesday night after driving 5 1/2 hours to get to Santa Margarita. Â We were famished, and this amazing option was close by and still open. We ordered the crispy ahi tuna roll to start as we perused through the menu. I absolutely loved it. The tuna was fresh and the wrapper crispy but not oily like so many other crispy rolls. For dinner I ordered the Lobster Mac N' Cheese. It was extraordinary! Usually when you order Lobster Mac and Cheese you get minuscule amounts of lobster just for flavor. Here you get CHUNKS! The cheese crust was executed wonderfully. Â Our waitress was so attentive despite the late hour. I highly highly recommend the lobster Mac n cheese. Â Stop by if you're in the area, and you won't be disappointed!
Review Source:Very good food, bar or otherwise. Â Large portions and tasty, well made dishes. Â Lobster pot pie was full of large pieces of the tasty crustacean, while the Philly cheese steak was big and juicy, and the fish & chips were solid. Â The potato skin appetizer was the best thing we ordered. Â The service was prompt to start, but disappeared after a while and I had to hunt down someone to figure out our check, which was wrong, but fixed eventually. Â A 3 star end to an otherwise 4 star experience.
Review Source:This place was a great find at ten steps away from my hotel! The bartender was really friendly, my friend and I made great conversation with a few of the other patrons, and I only paid $15 for 3 gin drinks, and it wasn't even happy hour. Bonus points that the bartender was wearing a sport kilt!
Review Source:Pappy McGregors really brings it to the table. With an all around awesome ambiance and great food, you can't go wrong. Good for family, groups, and  drinks. They have 2 for 1 drink specials on Sundays and if you check in you can get 1/2 off an appetizer. The nachos are enough for 2 people for a meal. The service is really hit or miss though. I have had some awesome servers and have had probably the worst server ever there. So, maybe just try and go for a waitress. ;)
Review Source:Regarding the Trivia/ "Bar Flies/Ringer" comment
This happens to be a group of highly educated
Individuals that enjoy challenging others and having fun while doing so.
Sorry for you that you're clearly not up for the challenge...
It's a little sad that a friendly game has to be turned into name calling session.
BTW: Ron Jeremy doesn't tolerate cheating
And insulted by your implication.
On another note; the staff and service are outstanding.
Chef Chris is wonderful! (hence the reason why we are "bar flies"...
This place is just ok for me. The food is inconsistent at best - sometimes great but other times it is soggy and tastes old. The wait staff can be attentive or terrible depending on the day (or their moods??)
Tuesday trivia is fun if you DO NOT care about winning AT ALL. The same group of bar flies/ ringers wins every week. The management seems to think people don't notice, but a group that doesn't turn in trivia answer sheets seems to keep winning... seems suspicious.
Two stars for the few times my food has arrived hot and my drinks arrived in a timely fashion.
If you're looking for a place to grab a drink and escape the downtown crowd, Pappy McGregor's is the place. I love the patio with the fireplace, and the service is always friendly and attentive.
The best time is mid afternoon, while it's still a little warm outside, but anytime of day or night is great! If you like live music, I heard a violin player here the other day that was phenomenal!
Also, the Thai Wrap is amazing. Give this place a try!
We were in town for 10 days and came here twice.
Great atmosphere, pub/cabin feel with the place nestled up against the hills.
Came here because some other reviewers said it was a locals place.
We sat outside by the fire both times.
First time we moved into eat.
I got the prime rib chili. It is FANTASTIC.
Wife got the Buffalo Chicken sandwich which was also good.
Lots of specials, although one night we were there I ordered a Captain and Diet and it was $7. Maybe at the beach, but in SLO that is a bit high don't you think?
Would be great to be upstairs on the couches with a larger group.
Very good service.
I went there last Sunday and my party of 7 walked out extremely unsatisfied. We got there around 7 PM and waited for 30 minutes for a table. Fine. Then the waiter came 20 minutes later to "take our ourders" Fine. Afterwards, she told us that we could sit inside as it was starting to clear out. It's now 8:25 PM and we still haven't received our waters yet. I ordered a lb of Garlic fries and it came with the entrees at 8:45 P.M. People ordered burgers, I ordered a prime rib. Everything was extremely cold, the waitresses seemed uninterested, and I will admit that no one left tip.
Out of all my dining experiences, this had to have been the worst.
Afterwards, I was curious to ask what happened that night. Two waitresses said they were "understaffed that night", yet they were near the bars the whole time.
Best bar in SLO. Â
Has a Vermont ski cabin feel to it... Â Upstairs lounge effect, you know what I mean...
Comfortable couches to sit in, tastefully decorated, the place is built really well, tight.
It's local, and off the beat and path away from the norm and tourist people.
Great place to have a couple pops.
My co-workers and I have made it a point to come here every Thursday after work.
They have an excellent kitchen - I highly recommend the fish tacos (especially at happy hour), the calamari strips, and the Frank's buffalo wings. The burgers and the sandwiches are also very good; I've tried most of the items on the menu and never really had a bad experience.
This place is also built to support a large number of people (parties both big and small), and I've rarely had an issue with finding a place to sit. They have two bars downstairs to cater to your drinking needs, and an excellent spot upstairs to chill, complete with comfy couches.
The atmosphere is rock solid: well dimmed lighting, fireplace on the patio, and of course complete with classic Celtic homage (bag-pipes on the walls, servers in kilts...)
Lastly, I've been more than happy with their typical music selection -- it gets into party mode a bit late in the evening, but if you're here before 9pm you'll usually get a healthy dose of 90s and today indie/alternative tunes: Shins, Vampire Weekend, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Modest Mouse, etc.. They also do a good job of blending that in with classics from the 60s and 70s.
This is a review about the food I ordered via <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2FMenu.Com&s=84bad82476d7b274da2f7212c1ffbef8ba0b0a6097ca3609fa319cdd50c75057" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://Menu.Com</a>. Â (This is Julie without Jenn...) Â
I ordered takeout twice from Pappy's. Â I had the steak salad as a wrap, which if you order it this way comes with sweet potato fries. Â They also have this peanut based sauce that they serve to go with the fries. Â It is slightly sweet with a nice spicy kick to it and it kind of had a nice hint of sesame oil in it. Â It was awesome. Â The sweet potato fries had a nice crispiness to it. Â The wrap was tasty and the steak inside were chopped into bite-sized pieces. Â I could see that the steak was cooked medium rare, which was awesome. Overall, the serving size was huge and worth the price! Â
Also, on another night, I ordered the Chicken Salad. Â The chicken was moist and well-seasoned. Â (The waiter/cook separated the hot elements from the cold ones. Â Nice touch!) Â The salad was awesome. Â (I wish it came with a side of sweet potato fries, but I was trying to be good.
The hostess and the waiter who helped me when I went to pick up the orders were both very friendly and accommodating. Â Overall, I would definitely come back to this place and perhaps get dinner with an Imperial pint of Guinness!
P.S. - <a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.menu.com&s=e1b1d058cbd9d6c19b444c1443b8a98578728770b6479220634b69e890cd32e3" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.menu.com</a> is an awesome tool for those visiting SLO! Â Lots of good grub available like Paddy's via online ordering tool!
I will never come here again. This place is soooo racist! After my cousin in laws wedding which ended at 10pm, we came here to start an after party. She walked in with her wedding dress and the groom in his tux! :)
As the night went on they security guards kept starring at us because we we  were the only mexican group in there. BIG DEAL! My fiance went to order some drinks and noticed that everything was cleaned up and people were no longer at the bar. He politely asked if they were still serving and the customers behind him and the bartenders laughed at him in a rude and disrespectful way and turned around to ignore him! REALLY?!?!?
His cousin who was with him at the time and asked what was so funny with no disrespecting tone. The lame as security guard grabbed him and said you gotta go, get out of here. We all left with no problem.
It seems as though I am not the only one who thinks this way!(look at pepe r. review!) Â
LESSON: IF YOU'RE NOT A LOCAL DON'T COME HERE AND EXPECT RESPECTFUL OR EVEN GOOD SERVICE AT ALL!
We go there every year for a east bay hospice golf tourney and stay at qualioty suites and we have made the Kilt/Pappy McGregor's our Friday Night dinner of choice. It was amazing and our server was top notch. We had a party of 15 and she handled everything very fast and professional and the food and drinks were all great.
I would reccomend putting Harp back on your beers on tap. Look forward to seeing you again next Sept and thanks for another wonderful experience.
First time here... we ordered the mac and cheese and one of their burgers. Â The burger came with fries. Â The fries were the highlight of the meal. Â Burger for the meat tasted different... Â Mac and cheese was yummy! Â And it came with garlic pesto spread bread. Â That was a hit too!
I thing pub food is the way to go... and not be disappointed in the quality and quantity.
Two thumbs up! Â I would come again...
Ahhh I love it here!! I've been here 3 times now just 'cause I love it so much. It's definitely one of my favorite places to eat in SLO :)
So far I've always gotten the Frisco burger ($10) which is served on sourdough bread instead of the regular burger buns. It reminds me of the burgers at In n' Out except way better. You also get super yummy garlic fries with it! (but they're not that garlicky) I've also gotten the calamari strips during happy hour (3-5pm) which were really crispy and tasty!
My most recent visit was on my birthday which meant free tshirt! YAY I love free tshirts :D I had to wear a kilt throughout my whole dinner in order to get one but it was totally worth it :) Since it was my 21st birthday, my friends bought me some drinks. The first one was the Kiltlifter (I think) which was a little too sweet for me. The second one was long island iced tea which was either too strong for me or I was just feeling too sick from the night before to like it.
The Kilt has a fun pub atmosphere, serves delicious food, and isn't too expensive. It's a great place to eat and drink with friends so try it out! Next time I want to try going to the couches in the upstairs loft :)
Happy hours 3-5pm on Friday! woo hoo! 1/2 off appetitizers like calamari ($7), garlic fries ($4), onion rings ($4), etc.
It's a very friendly atmosphere, good for groups to hang out. They have a fire pit as well a couches and long tables. I've been here twice and loved it! It's cheap and delicious. A burger with fries is around $10, and drinks aren't that expensive. I would recommend this place if you're looking for dinner and drink.
If it's your birthday, you can receive a free tshirt if you were a kilt all dinner.
Easy parking, and it's close to hotels, if you're a guest, or a Cal Poly student. I definitely enjoy eating here with good company.
Pretty good pub atmosphere away from downtown SLO, but very close to campus and the hotel strip on Monterey street. Â We were staying at a hotel nearby, so we stopped in for a drink while waiting to meet up with my sister. Â
Cute little college girls hostess and serve in short kilts! Â Cute! Â The space is huge, it's kind of a terribly designed space, not Irish pub in anyway, more like an 80's monolith dance cub or something, but high ceilings are cool, right? Â Huge parking lot.
There are even 2 patios to choose from, and they let us sit out on one all by ourselves so we could see the sunset near San Luis 'Mountain'. Nice way to chat and snack and drink with such a pretty view. Â
The servings of fries are truly 1 lb servings, and pretty damn tasty with some Ranch type dip, which I normally hate, but enjoyed in this case, and BBQ sauce. Â We had to ask for ketchup. Â
The service was actually better than I expected for SLO, I was only here once for a couple of drinks and a snack, but I wish them the best- they seem to have a formula for success in a college town.
Fun place, but I don't think I'd ever make a special trip off the "main strip" in SLO to visit this place. Â Sadly, I think The Kilt has everything going for it except the beer.
Came here for the obligatory new-bar-in-town visit this past year and was pleasantly surprised by the size and food. Â The place is huge- with a couple bars around the building and decor typically of an Irish pub. Â I also applaud being served beer by a man in a kilt. Â The pub food is great- try the potato skins. Â I can safely say the chef at this place knows what's up. Â
I was a bit disappointed with the beer selection, however. Â I'm not a Guiness fan, and I was surprised to see only about 8 taps on at the main bar. Â Definitely a strike. Â And who makes a night time trip to a bar just for the decor and food?
I had:
3$ margarita (strong) x2
5$ long island (medium but very tasty) x2
14$ calamari and chips
Maybe there was one bad piece of calamari, but it was still good - and who knows, maybe I got sick from the alcohol instead. The fries were delicious, and the portion was so large that my boyfriend and I shared just one meal and spent our money on happy hour instead.
Speaking of happy hour - this is the real reason they get 5 stars. Happy hour is from 4-6 and then... AGAIN... from 10-12! So my suggestion is to go upstairs, which is very well appointed with a relaxing lounge feel, find a couch (yep, a couch) or a recliner and chill out for dinner, and then make your way back down at 10:00. It's as good as second breakfast.
You can sit outside, but there aren't heat lamps available. There is a fire pit, but it's sure to be crowded with skanks and their chihuahuas.
GREAT atmosphere - loved this place
Great food, great people, good service, wonderful decorations and surroundings. And I love the location - it's in walking distance from my apartment and not overcrowded with downtown crazies
Only thing keeping this from being 5 stars is that it's expensive!
Happy hour looks promising though =)
