I finally got to try the Pik N Pig this weekend when I was in the area visiting family. Â They've been talking about it for quite a while. Â We called in an order of 4 bbq plates, and when we went to pick it up, I was totally bummed out that we weren't eating there! Â The atmosphere of the place is great. Â Right before we got there, I laughed at the "Low Flying Planes" sign, then, low and behold a plane flew right in front of us and nearly scared me to death. Â There is a landing strip adjacent to the Pik N Pig. Â The restaurant is actually an old post office, and they still have some of the original decor inside. Â I loved it. Â Plus they have a huge, covered, outside sitting area with fans, where you can watch the planes come and go. Â
For lunch, I had the pork, cole slaw, fries, and corn muffin. Â The pork was really good, coarsely chopped and moist. Â Their bbq sauce was pretty good. Â We actually got extra because we all like our bbq spicy and saucy. Â Kudos on the jalapeno butter for the corn muffin! Â The slaw was very fresh, but it was mayo based, which is not my preference, but it was otherwise good, and the fries were fries. Â I can't wait to actually eat in and try their chicken or ribs. Â I hear they are just as good or even better!
This place is great! I had the pulled pork plate that was delicious, son had pp&j and other son had a hot dog that he absolutely loved!
By far the best feature was that they left a whole pitcher of tea on the table so I could refill my own glass! That right there is an indication that they are isolated from the Yankee influence plaguing the urban areas around here!
The airstrip and P-40 replica were icing on the cake!
Family drove over 90 minutes to meet us at the restaurant last week only to find out it was closed for the entire week - not cool.
We had checked their Facebook page and their website and there was no mention that the restaurant would be closed for a week. Â Many other PO'd customers in the parking lot with the same story.
The owners clearly dont give a crap about their patrons. Â Good BBQ does not make-up for being disrespectful to your customers. Â We won't be returning anytime soon.
Visiting NC.  Didn't realize restaurant was on an airport until we turned in off the road.  I've probably been in over 100 airport cafes, flying in to most of them, and this one has got to be in the top 5 of the ones  I've visited over the years.  I had the brisket; son and hubbie had the pulled pork.  I thought mine was the better choice.  Nice smoke ring and flavor although not up to Texas standard on the texture.  We all had the baked sweet potato which was yummy with the butter and brown sugar on the side.  Hush puppies come with and I recommend you say yes to the jalapeno butter, which has just the right amount of heat but not too much.  Cole slaw a little bland for my taste.  The BBQ sauces weren't to my taste either, but that's so personal.  I thought the pork was on the dry side and needed some sauce.  A busy day but the service was as good as one could expect with the crowd and certainly cheerful.  Lots of action on the airstrip provided great entertainment.  Did I say you need to sit outside?  Well worth searching this place out if the weather is good and you're anywhere in the area.
Review Source:I don't have tons of experience with southern bar-b-cue, but this place is certainly a gem worth checking out. It's a bit out of the way, but the location is part of the novelty.
The menu is fairly simple, but supplemented by daily specials. Our food was fantastic and the choices for sides extensive, though several in our party couldn't order what they wanted because we were told they were almost out of brisket (when one of your three major menu items is running low, you might need to reevaluate your priorities...)
My only complaint is that our service was less than stellar. Several times our server forgot a drink for one of the members of our party, and was generally slower than we'd expect. Although, since we were there for a lazy lunch, it wasn't that big of a deal.
After years of enjoying Pik N Pig I will not return as my last experience was that bad. Â I took an out of town relative and was so excited for her to experience the food. Â We were told the item we wanted to order was for take out only and we would need to leave to eat that item. Â Â The staff was rude.
Review Source:This place is truly awesome. Located next to a county airstrip with some monuments to the Flying Tigers and local aviation heroes, it's one of the most unique places I've ever come for the 'cue.
My wife and I opted for the pulled pork plate, me with cole slaw and baked beans, her with vegetable of the day and sweet potato. The food was fantastic.
The meat was tender and suculent with just the barest hint of smoke. While I normally go for spicier sauces, I found myself prefering the sweet sauce which had a honey and sweet-onion flavor. The spicy sauce was good, but nothing of particular note. I actually think that the meat was so good it might be better without any sauce at all!
Our sides were also good, although the cole slaw was not quite to my taste. We also had the nanner pudding for desert (a rarity for me) and were both impressed. One of the features we liked very much was the pitcher of sweet tea set on the table since it allowed us to refill on our own.
Service was friendly although a little slow, but we got there at what appeared to be a rush. We also liked the decor which was country 'cue joint with a nice view of the airfield.
The Pik N Pig will become, I believe, a regular stop for us.
Beside the tiny airstrip in Carthage, this little shack draws all kinds of folks and can get quite busy on a Sunday afternoon (it is open then, unlike many restaurants in nearby Pinehurst). Â We found the pulled pork to be tender and succulent. Â The only problem was the sauce. Â The "spicy" was too much zing, not enough depth. Â The "sweet" was just weird. Â The cabbage was good enough and the nanner pudding was mediocre. Â The cornbread was bone dry. Â If I come again, I'd just as soon get some dry pulled pork to go and put my own eastern NC-vingar sauce on it at home. Â The waitresses here were pleasant and attentive. Â Everything came out speedily and with a smile. It is a family friendly, down-home atmosphere.
Review Source:Not a review of the restaurant, but instead a review of their representation at the NC State Fair 2012. Â After being to the fair for so many years, I certainly have found a new favorite.
I grabbed a BBQ plate and got a side cup of the spicy vinegar sauce. Â The pork itself with the dry rub was absolutely awesome. Â Tender and moist and perfect smokey taste. Â The sauce was killer as well. I had to fight off my son picking at my plate and he never eats BBQ around Raleigh.
My wife went back for the BBQ Sundae (likely just a fair based serving) which was the BBQ in a large cup with beans on top and slaw on top of that - easy to walk and eat. Â She was proud to hear she was the first to ask for it "upside down" so she could enjoy the BBQ without it being covered with the beans and slaw. Â She agreed that this was some of the best BBQ we've had in a long time.
I am also adding this review to my yelp history as I must get out to Carthage to try the food at it's source. Â The atmosphere with picnic tables on the community runway seems like it would be worth the drive down from Raleigh.
Good job guys. Â Keep coming back to the fair!
Amazing little place with great service. Â Closes at 8pm! Â We went with a bunch of guys from NY and LA and we were impressed with the bbq place. Â They do sell beer and they are known for the briskets and chicken. Â The wings though were a surprise for all of us. Â I will go back to this place anytime.
Review Source:Brought some northern golfing buddies here and they wanted to come back every dinner they were in town. Â Great BBQ, fried pickles and deserts. Â Service is exceptional and the food is great. Â Located right next to a small airport landing strip with inside and outside seating. Â Not easy to find but worth the effort
Review Source:Great BBQ with a homey southern flair. The place is very rustic, busy, and loud with loads of great food. Don't come here if you are stuffy and expecting restaurant chain food. The menu is simple and short, pork or chicken! We all had the large pulled pork with baked beans and slaw. The hush puppies were fresh and excellent. Service was quick and charming. If you want ribs they serve them one night a week and you need to pre order.
Review Source:Being born and raised in Chicago, I grew up thinking that barbecue meant slathering whatever meat you were grilling with tons of ketchup based, spicy, sauce. So when my boyfriend and I drove down to visit his aunt in North Carolina, and was told we'd be dining at a barbecue joint...I was dying inside. I just kept flashing back to the sloppy sauce in Chicago that I'd grown to hate.
I bit my tongue, and braced myself for the experience. Everyone was ordering the pulled pork, which I strayed away from anticipating a mess on a bun.So, I went with the spicy pulled chicken sandwich.
I don't want to forget to mention the fried pickle appetizer...DO NOT pass it up! It's amazing.
When all our meals arrived imagine my surprise, and joy when everything was barbecued with a DRY rub!
North Carolina BBQ for the win!
It was the best barbecue I'd ever had, in a comfortable, family style setting, with pretty decent service and GREAT prices.
Don't miss out on this hidden gem located on a landing strip!
Fantastic place. Â Walking up on a Friday night, there was a band playing outside and the picnic tables were full and people having a good time. Â We ended up inside, but the AC felt nice.
Pulled pork was fantastic. Â Tried all the sauces and liked the vinegar based one the best, but all were excellent. Â If you want ribs, they were only doing them on Saturday night when we were there.
Cash or Check ONLY!!! Â That means NO Credit Cards!!!
Barbecue on a Landing Strip! Â The pulled pork was good, the service was good (the waitress seemed to keep trying to give us the bill and I kept ordering food). Â The fries were OK, not A -OK, just OK (they will not make my fry list - NO WAY - still better than most), the Sweet Sauce was not good, though the Spicy sauce was very good. Â Fried pickles were very good!
For Dessert, the so called "Better Than Sex" cake was good, not real good and definitely not better than sex, not even bad sex, not even better than ex, nor even x.
This rustic, rambling restaurant is right beside the small airport's grass runway. The exterior is indeed rustic, the interior homey, cluttered, funk, with lots of wood showing. Ceiling is low so the noise level is noticeable, tables are a little close together.
They pit cook their pig here, and it comes out of the kitchen, more pulled than chopped, with a nice flavor of smoke - it is also tender, moist, and has very little sauce, if any. There are three sauces on the table - a house mild, a house hot, and Texas Pete. The house hot is a tomato based sauce with only a little heat, the mild is barely noticeable.
This is very, very good barbecue, but it is not truly Eastern NC barbecue - it lacks a nice vinegar & pepper sauce twang, so it is more of a platform, than a great finished pig product. Here if you combine some of the house "hot" sauce with the Texas Pete you get a good effect.
The hot dog is only so-so - although they do carve the wiener into a human shape, which is neat for a child, a little bewildering and disturbing on several levels for an adult. The pork chop sandwich is a piece of smoked loin, and the smokiness dominates the sandwich, wouldn't order it or the dog again.
The fries were outstanding - hot, crisp, with enough oil to hold the salt. The slaw is white, slightly sweet, with some bits of carrot - doesn't do much for the chopped pork sandwich. The hush puppies are very good.
The desserts are homemade - today it was Better Than Sex Cake and Coke Cola Cake. The Coke cake has both coke abd chocolate, and is rich, and very good. Â The Better Than Sex Cake is also very good, but the name lies, a little - opinions will probably vary.
Service was quick and efficient - drink glasses never got near empty, ask often if anything was need - these ladies are good, and a pleasure to be around. Time out of the kitchen was very good, especially when you consider how long it must have taken to carve the wiener into a human.
It's a great day, clear, cool and little wind. Â Let's fly to Carthage for BBQ. Â
What?
And off we went to the Monroe Community Airport southeast of Charlotte to check out an airplane and fly the 45 minutes northeast.
Pik N Pig has been around for years and has a simple yet wonderful menu: Â pulled pork, pork chops and chicken. Â OK...they also have Deli sandwiches, but why confuse the situation? Â
You land on a fairly short asphalt strip after calling out your intentions on the radio because the airstrip is not towered or manned. Â We overflew the strip and went into a landing pattern. Â Once on the ground we parked in the grass strip between the runway and taxiway amongst a half dozen other aircraft.
The shacky-like building offers a big patio and lots of seats indoors. Â Outdoors you can watch the planes land and take off, so that was our choice and our recommendation if you fly or drive there.
The pork is wonderful. Â Soft and moist and smoky, but in contrast to other BBQ one can actually taste the pork. Â What a treat. Â Fries were OK, a little underdone, but the hush puppyies were finger-sized globs of delicious, lightly saged sweet dough, which went perfectly with the pork.
Yum, yum. Â They also have catering goodies and vary the menu with specials, like ribs, so you could call them to check out what is what.
Cars packed the dirt parking lot, there is a golf driving range and, of course, the planes.
Well, after a very relaxing lunch watching a couple of guys driving buckets of golf balls and kids playing catch and all variety of airplane landing and taking off, we ourselves took off for our Charlotte return.
Next time I will buy a butt rub T-shirt, but that is another story.
How great it was to spend $20 for a lunch and only $225 to get there and back? Â I am sure the men in white coats are coming...
If you find yourself in Carthage, the Pik N Pig is a must stop destination for dining. Located on an airstrip, it is a popular place to fly to for lunch. There is outdoor seating so you can enjoy the planes taking off and landing. Inside are all sizes of tables. It was packed on Saturday at 1:30 so I was seated at a large table with others for the community effect.
I had a pulled pork sandwich w/slaw and a baked sweet potato with brown sugar and butter. They serve two types of sauce: a sweet, tomato based and a hot, vinegar based. I tried both and they were delicious.
The only thing that could make this place better is an area to take a nap in a lazy boy recliner before making the flight back to Raleigh.
"Here's your sweet tea, darlin'" my server said as she went off to fill my order. This restaurant is located on the town's lone airport/airstrip/landing strip? I don't know exactly what it's called. But, it's a nice place to stop in for some BBQ. I had the Janie today, a pork loin sandwich with sweet BBQ sauce. It came with fries, cole slaw and a pickle.
The Pik N Pig has a variety of sandwiches, as well as dinners and whole racks of ribs on the weekends (but get there early, because once they sell out, they're done). And because I wasn't sure that the sweet tea was going to give me a cavity, I had the lady throw in a piece of Co-Cola Cake (which I was reading about in a review on the wall as I waited for my order--it's supposed to be better than sex; I don't know about all that, but the cake is good, ya'll). I actually just remembered that cake and bumped up my rating from three stars to four because the cake is GOOD!
My sandwich was good, not great. I would have preferred it with a lot more sauce and some cole slaw that had a little more flavor. (And it's my fault because last time I was in, I asked about the sauce and the owner hooked me up with some extra and some different kinds of sauces; yup, I like it saucy).
I like this place because it's quick, convienient, and you can watch planes take off and land while waiting for your order. Not a bad way to while away an afternoon...with another slice of cake, of course!
FYI: CASH ONLY
