Typically I wouldn't be recommending a hotel bar next to the freeway in the very town I live in, but Poppe's has done a few special things to deserve a 5 star rating. Â Along with their very nice remodel of the outdoor seating area with firepits and heat lamps, they have added an open mic night that features popular local musicians. Â A wide variety of sounds can be heard on otherwise uneventful Tuesdays. Â I defnintely recommend taking a couple of friends to check it out.
Review Source:We used to go here all the time in college. Happy hour was great. You could get a great deal on food and a martini. They give you the whole shaker too!
We had dinner there for the first time in awhile and I was disappointed. They no longer offer happy hour snacks! The menu has changed as well. Bummer :(
Regardless, the food IS good and the drinks are well priced. But I was hoping for more tonight and I just didn't get that.
I ordered the steak bites and Jake had a burger and fries. I had a glass of wine for $4 and Jake had a couple of beers for $7. Our bill was around $30.
I was surprised to realize that this is a hot spot in Bellingham. Â On a Friday or Saturday night this place is jamming. Â Why? I don't know why people are drinking at a hotel bar in a Fred Meyer parking lot, but they do. Â
The food is great and drinks are great. Â Go for happy hour and you won't feel too bad about the drink prices and food. Â
The one thing I do love about this place is how they give you the drink and the remainder in the shaker...just like an old timey milkshake, but with alcohol. Â YES!
Came in on Saturday night with a party of 22. Â Alicia was our server, she was very attentive and friendly. Â We stayed till last call which was 12 but the sign in the elevator said it was 1...whatever. Â Tried the shaker drink last time we were in so I didn't fall for the juice and ice trick like before. Â We stuck to shots, well drinks and beer....all were just what we expected. The DJ played our request and a lot of songs we liked. Â The calamari we ordered at the end of the night was good but not much to it, most of it seemed to be the breading at the end of the bag. Â The flavor and toppings were good, would try it again. Â We'll be back....probably won't drop $130 between the two of us again, but we will come back. Â Oh! and the outdoor area looks really cool...just too cold out to sit there this time.
Review Source:Joined to the hip with the Best Western Lakeway Inn, this restaurant/lounge is trying to be better than the Inn that it shares its space with. The beer selection is descent, they have some typical draft beers along with some local breweries on tap which made for a nice combo.
They lost me at the food, why would you try to do a Blackened Salmon Salad without fresh ingredients?? There is no way the food I ate was remotely fresh and the fish knows it! Sorry Poppes but you are trying too hard. You have nice outdoor seating and the ambiance is sleek but you can't fake being cool, that just comes naturally.
I used to love this place! They have great drinks and HH.
Unfortunately I am very loyal and when I don't receive the same treatment I lose interest. I won a trip to Hawaii there like 2 months ago. I booked the flight no problem. But the accommodation part of the trip is still up in the air. I have tried calling the agent (in Bonney Lake, WA) numerous times and sent emails. Recently I decided to call Poppe's to see if they could help me reach them in some way. I have left 2 voicemails with the Sales/ Marketing Manager and still have yet not received a phone call. At this point I am frustrated. When you win a trip you shouldn't have to struggle with it. If someone could please just call me back I'd be a happy camper!
This place is pretty swanky for a motel bar, but it's still a motel bar.
Since I was staying at the Best Western Lakeway Inn that this establishment is connected to, my companions and I decided to try out Poppes' happy hour. Â The outdoor patio area is pretty cool with lots of seating and a few gas fireplaces, but the view from the patio is the hotel parking lot-- and the flank of huge tour bus (which was noisily idling and spewing diesel exhaust for at least 10 minutes) during our visit. Â
Our server was quite nice, but it seemed like it took longer than necessary to return with the goods each time she took a drink order, and the wait for food was RIDICULOUS! Â When we were all ordering appetizers off the limited (8 item?) happy hour menu, it seems way out of whack to be sitting and waiting a full hour for said appetizers to arrive at the table. Â One of the dishes we requested wasn't available (making the limited menu that much more limited), so we settled on calamari, loaded cheesy fries, and hot wings. Â Once they finally did show up, the food was pretty damn good and serving size surprising generous (especially the calamari) for $6 each-- but by that time we were so hungry a can of cat food would have been a treat.
With so many other drinking and dining options in Bellingham, I won't bother with this one again.
They have nice booths that offer privacy and class. The martinis are served well and in a shaker on your table. If you are out on a date and plan on having cocktails this is great place to go while dressed nicely.
Their happy hour stands out with the calamari being one of my favorites. The live jazz on the weekends should be on your agenda if you haven't had chance to chill in this swanky spot yet.
This is a little hard to review, because the drinks and service were outstanding. Â The food, however, was not good. Â We have been coming here for years and have always enjoyed the food, especially the happy hour appetizers. Â The menu had changed and nothing we tried really stood out as good, let alone great. Â I hope they turn around the food because it's a great place for drinks.
Review Source:Last night (New Years Eve) we went to Poppes to ring in the new year.  We sat down and ordered a drink.  There were no signs saying anything about there being a cover charge and no one greeted us at the door to say anything.  After a couple of drinks (he drank, I had nothing) we decided to go somewhere else because there was no entertainment and it was crammed with people.  We asked for our bill and it was  $42.00 (for 2 drinks).  We call the waitress over and she explains that there's a $20.00 cover charge for the two of us.  We were shocked by this because there was absolutely nothing like a band or comedy act or anything that would justify a cover charge.  Fortunately the waitress offered to take the charge off but we are still disappointed in Poppes for this.  I am sure that a lot of people were surprised at their bill...or maybe Poppes figured that by midnight everyone would be too wasted to notice an extra $10.00 tacked on.....pretty sneaky!!
Review Source:The best martini in Bellingham, for $10-12 I think it's worth it to pay more for a tasty, well-done drink. Â The bartender I had for one visit was friendly and attentive - but then I've never had bad service here. Â It never gets very loud, so it's a great place to converse and hang out with your friends and have a nice drink.
Review Source:For $10-12 per shaker we would have expected something a little stiffer.... mostly they were comprised of ice and juice. And the atmosphere is not its redeeming quality.
I'm not sure what the appeal of this place is, actually. I agree with the other review, it feels and looks a lot like what it is, a cheesy hotel bar. There are dozens of great joints with more character and originality only blocks away where you'll get a little more bang for your buck.
I used to love taking my girlfriends or a date here for a Martini and appetizers. Â However, I went here last week with a group of girlfriends and I received very poor customer service from the Waitress who turned out to be the Manager. Â When I politely expressed my unhappiness with her snotty attitude, she didn't even apologize and she continued being rude. Â This was very disappointing to me. Â I used to waitress myself for 8 years and every waitress knows that when a customer is dissatisfied, Â you do everything you can to make the customer happy and try to get them to come back. Â I will not be going back to Poppe's or recommending this bistro to anyone until the woman who is currently Manager is gone.
Review Source:The service, food and atmosphere were top notch. We especially enjoyed the service of our waitress, Sam. We've alreay raved to friends about the 3 dish sampler: the crab and humus were addicting and the portions were huge! The atmosphere is friendly, the decore is modern and comfortable. A DJ spins tunes several nights a week and there is a small dance floor for those who are inclined.
Review Source:Nestled in the rather bland Best Western Hotel , deep at the back of a parking lot behind a Fred Meyer's is the unlikely location of this fun and spunky Belligham night spot.
The crowd is a mix of middle agers and college kids all out to enjoy the live music. We saw a surprising good RandB style three singer group singing disco to hip-hop with passion and aplomb.
The food and drinks were excellent (try the scallops). My wife gushed over the mojitos which come in 12 different flavors.
No cover charge the night we were here, just lot of fun!
If you are after HUGE fruity martinis, then you have found your own personal Garden Of Eden. Â I like the vibe in this place most nights and the martinis are very good, despite the attempted witty names. Â Drinks are about $10-$12 each which is a lot for a college town, except they serve a full shaker with each drink, so you are really getting about 3 drinks for that price. Â A deal to be sure!
Skip the food here, it isn't very good, and there are better places to eat in the area.
Service is about what you'd expect from a hotel bar such as this, so plan on waiting to place your next drink order.
Anytime I'm in Bellingham, my routine is the same, dinner at Mambo's and martinis here. Â A can't miss combo for sure!
Want cheesy hotel bar? Want large martinis with a shaker for about 10 bucks? Want some serious cougars? go to poppes!
I lived close by and wandered that way more then one friday evening for drinks with friends or dates and never left walking as straight on the way home. The drinks are tasty and not overly weak (not overly strong either but good). And yes the outdoor seating is nice.
The food was basic at best, the atmosphere is your usual cheesy hotel bar, the service staff are less then attentive but not amazing, and oh dear the the clientelle can be quite amusing.
I'll go back if i'm in town for a meeting but not many other reasons.
I LOVE Poppes, and I give it 5 stars because I ONLY go there for Happy Hour (everyday 4-7). Â Any other time of the week it's just waay to expensive (especially as a college student). Â Poppes has some of the best happy hour prices in town, especially for how classy it sets out to be. Â I always receive good service and it's the perfect place for a date or girls night or whatever. Â They usually have good live music, usually "loungy" type. Â Definitely go to Poppes for Happy Hour! Â It gets packed on the weekends so I prefer to go during the week when I can relax more.
Review Source:I have been here a few times. Â There martini concepts are really great, but they underpour them. Â I feel like I am paying 10 dollars for juice. Â Martinis are not supposed to have alot of juice/mixer in them....
The atmosphere is really nice and I love the seating. Â I have not been there for the live bands, but I am not sure if I will return to check it out.
The barstaff is nice, but the waitresses are a little rude.
me and my boyfriend go here all the time now for happy hour. Â it's half classy half looks like a strip club. Â happy hour rocks and i love a $4 dirty martini! Â kind of weird that its in the best western but i have no complaints, good cheap drinks and food till 7pm in a nice atmosphere
Review Source:I love the martini's here! Although some people say there spendy, you also get the shaker with it. In Seattle you could pay $10 for just the martini alone, so I am not complaining. The atmosphere is nice, and I have always had really great service there too. My biggest complaint is that its a little dark, especially if you sit in one of the booths. I can barely read the menu in some of the booths. But other then that, the atmosphere is nice, its really lovely when there are people there playing live music. Its a nice place to relax after a long day, and have a drink with some friends. Their calamari is really good, and so is there garlic bread, if you go during happy hour. I am young (23) but I prefer going to places where I can actually talk to my friends and hang out, rather then most of the loud places downtown, so I really enjoy going to Poppes.
Review Source:Over-priced, Â juiced up martinis, which is why they seem so big...lots of mixer with a splash of alcohol. Great, Â if you are just embarking on a drinking career, which seems to be the crowd now. College kids with ma and pop's credit cards.
For adults over 30, an alright happy hour and there is no way I am paying $10 for any martini, esp when you can get a good bottle for $30. The food is okay and so is the service, tho the manager there rocks!!!
A just right ,slightly laid back , swanky drink bar with yummy concoctions! with names like School Girl & Gummi Bear*
There is fruit based, liquor based, & texture based (think creamy*) drink. There is beer but... it is in a bottle and... that is not why you would come here. This is a great spot for a date, girl get together, or to unwind.
They have a happy hour. I really don't remember anything about the food- unremarkable.
It is located in a Bestwestern- who would have thought?!
The drinks here are pretty good. Â You get a medium sized shakers worth for the mixed martini specials they have. Â The service I get here tends to be worth it no matter how bad it might get.
It can get crowded and loud some nights since it's not too large of a venue. Â They often have live music playing on Fridays and the Weekends. Â
I'm a dirty martini fan, and it was pretty good here!
I second Mallory's comments. One of the great things about this place is their drinks. They give you plenty of martini for your money. If you smoke, there is an fenced outside where you can take your drink. they have lots of booths surrounding the bar so you can come with your friends and have a great time. You don't have to get too dolled up but I would recommend putting on something 'nice.' A few times I have been here they have been playing some great music. I remember hearing about a few new groups from asking the staff what they were playing. At least on Friday nights they have live Jazz, and it might be Saturday also.
Review Source:This is a great martini bar located in the lobby of the Best Western, just off the freeway. Â Tons of people come here on Fridays and Saturdays for the more charming, less abrasive night out on the town. Â It's a good contrast from the downtown bar scene. Â Dress on the classy side (most do) and bring your friends.
