Breweries are often nestled in the oddest of places. For beer drinkers who just fresh moved from a landlocked state this location is pretty odd. The brewery is in an area of Port Townsend where it is a mix of industrial manufacturing and fishing boats. Parking in the area is terribly confusing in this area but the brewery does have it's own parking.
We got the Amber Ale and the Bitter End IPA. Â The amber was good. It was relatively complex and had a good aftertaste to it. The Bitter End IPA was good as well and lived right up to it's namesake with ease.
The lady was extremely friendly that worked there but listening to the locals gossip there  reminded me of some small town dive bar where eavesdropping or getting caught up in awkward and uninteresting subjects are impossible to avoid. Still despite the salty talk the brewery has class and rises above all that.
I planned a last minute weekend getaway to Port Townsend this last weekend to celebrate my husbands and my 4 year wedding anniversary! Since we are so into beer, I decided on Port Townsend so we could come to this brewery! It was stumbling distance to our hotel, BONUS!
This place was pretty well packed at 5pm. We found a seat at the bar and were greeted by the bartender. She was great! We decided to sample everything on tap! At only $1 per taster (About the size of a shot glass) why not?! $11 for all 11 beers on tap!
My favorites were; Reel Amber, Strait Stout & the PT Brown Porter. Chet's Golden Ale was a strong runner up!
The only bad thing about this place, closing time was 7pm on a Saturday! We probably would've shut the place down had it stayed open! But I guess we saved ourselves some money! It was awesome though, the bartender did not rush us, she even offered us another beer at 7. There were several locals in there too chatting with her and she said, "Take your time, I have to clean this place anyways!" She was fantastic! She gave us some tips on what to do with our evening, and she hooked us up with FREE stickers (that looked to be labels from their brews!) We also bought a growler for $5, and a pint glass for $5. Thats a cheap growler and a pricey pint glass, but it is a cool glass!
I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! It's a shame it's so far from home!! :( But regardless of the distance, we will definitely be back!!!
4.5 Stars.
You have a small tasting room -- pretty bare bones/no frills. Tall tables, tall chairs, and a row of taps to choose from. Â No food, just plenty of peanuts to shell and keep you from toppling over if you spend a good amount of time here. The girl running the tap was quick and friendly, and full of suggestions for those of us who had questions. Â The room itself was clean with bright wood, and lots of light. Basic but comfortable -- especially when you settle in with the brew of your choice.
I sampled several on my trip -- PTB's Scotch Ale being my clear favorite. Bold, not tooooooooooo malty, and just strong enough for me to feel it halfway through my pint. Their special barely wine with sriracha was a delicious slow drinker, and their winter ale crisp, refreshing, and on the somewhat strong side.
Before this visit I had never had Port Townsend Brewing beers before, and I have to say I was rightly impressed. Everything was good. I'll make it a point to look for from here on out, and always a visit if im in Pt. Townsend again.
Solid, no frills tasting room on the edge of town. The server was happy to let me taste as many of the beers as I wanted before ordering. Their scotch ale is probably their best and most widely available. They had a small-batch imperial scotch that was just amazing! Not available for growler fill though, which was a big shame. Their other brews are good but not amazing, pretty average on their several IPAs.
I was happy to sit and enjoy a pint or two while writing up some postcards and letters, but I wouldn't necessarily go here to hang out with friends. Reasonable price on the growler fills though, and I always appreciate having a nice backup option where I know I can go and enjoy a beer without the noise, crowd and hassle of a busy bar sometimes.
In the maritime town of Port Townsend this relaxing brewery captures the surrounding area perfectly in their beer.
An amazing 10+ brews are on tap. They have a good Amber, several good IPAs and the most notable a Scotch Ale.
The brews are not stellar, but consistently good. Â I am a fan of IPAs and they offer several here.
Overall, this is a great place to capture the spirit of PT.
I've been a fan of Port Townsend ever since i had their stout on Nitro (soooo tasty) I finally made it to the tasting room for a tasting event and the place looks beautiful. Â The bar and surrounding walls are all wood and looks as if you're on a boat. Â The brewery is somewhat visible from the outside so you might even catch them brewing! Â Unfortunatly no food on site but there are a couple places within walking distance. Â Even if you're not in the area its a perfect jumping off point to explore Port Townsend, just ask the bartenders where to go next!
Review Source:Normally I love local breweries, but this one was just ok. The beers were decent, although way too many IPAs, but the bartender was not friendly and it was super loud. We actually tried to go twice, but the first time it was WAY too full and there was no room to even get to the bar to order. My biggest complaint about this place is that they don't serve food. It is a beer/wine bar only and if you want peanuts, they are $1.50.
If you want the beer, I suggest just buying it on tap at any number of local spots. It will cost the same and give you a better environment
We had the sampler. Â Every single beer was good and most were excellent. Â I loved the Pale Ale and I don't even generally like Pale Ale. Â Two truly excellent IPAs. Â Simple room with barstools lining the walls and a large bar down the center with chairs on either side. Â The set-up of the room encourages conversations with other patrons. Very, very impressed with the quality of the beer and friendly crowd.
Review Source:I didn't know that I liked Scottish Ales (actually thought I really dis-liked them) until had PTB's Peeping Peater. I'd died and gone to heaven, which apparently looks a lot like Port Townsend.
The space is an unpretentious and strait-forward no frills tasting room - the highlight is the beer and there's no mistake about that.  I'm not a local, but I'm lucky/smart enough to've picked one to be in a go-home-for-holidays-long-term relationship with one. We go here every time we visit his folks, and  they bring a growler of PTBC every time they come to town!
 I love this place!
This place is awesome. MUST STOP BY here if going to Port Townsend or in the area. Placed on this small shipyard with other small little cafes and eatery's nearby. Inside looks like a wine-tasting room. Spacious- but most people are congregating near the bar. Local Brewery with a small selection of wine. They serve peanuts and chips and brats and beer. They had their own beer garden outside w/ plenty of lawn chair seating and such. I felt like I was sitting outside in someones yard, listening to music, soaking in the sun- and drinking cold tasty beer/ cup of wine. PRICELESS
Review Source:$1 samplers! A great variety of beers: gold, pale ale, ipa, stout, porter, scotch ale, and an extra special bitter. Many breweries offer samplers as a taster six, but here you can custom order your samplers $1 at a time! There is no food offered, except for peanuts. The brewery will let you bring food from outside to eat with their beer.
Review Source:PT Brewery captures the deeply nautical essence of Port Townsend in every brew.
The pub itself is a reflection of the maritime community within which it resides--right down to the rope pulley system that closes the door. The densely wooded tasting room creates a warm atmosphere, which is heightened when it fills with locals after five; it's not uncommon to find the windows completely fogged upon arrival.
The quality of the beer goes without saying, you'll just have to try them all to find your favorite. And the servers behind the counter are always pleasant and generous. PT Brewery is one of the highlights of Port Townsend.
This place is simply great. The beer is amazing, of course. Strictly beer--no food. The crowd is always fun. You'll find hipsters sitting next to ancient boat builders, mill workers sharing pints with artists. Everyone is always friendly. The beer garden cannot be beat, especially for live music. The wife and I visit Port Townsend a couple times each year. No visit would be complete without hitting the brewpub.
Review Source:I'd drive all the way to Port Townsend for their beer but thankfully the in-laws have a condo there so I don't have to. Â I love their IPA's and their amber ales. Â Utilitarian atmosphere outside but warm cozy environment inside. Â Great little outdoor area when the weather is agreeable. Â Don't forget to bring your glass half gallon refill bottle when you come back...
Review Source:Great local spot that's friendly to tourists as well. Comfortable tasting room with plenty of taps and quite a few bottles of wine on offer. No kitchen, but they do have no shortage of peanuts in the shell, roasted locally. Lots of solid brawny ales on offer, with friendly service and the bewitching aromas of a working brewery just down the hall.
The setting is utilitarian at first glance--gravel parking lot, corrugated metal boat warehouses. But the vibe inside and good-to-great beers. Always a great little seaside getaway in PT.
Port Townsend Brewery has damn fine beer at reasonable prices. It is in an industrial part of town and not in the historic district, but it does have a beautiful beer garden. Its a shame its hard to find PT beer on the other side of the sound as it is much better than alot of the breweries in the North Sound Area.
Review Source:A brewery in a laid back town with an outdoor beer garden, in addition to the bar and seating room indoors....and they don't allow you to sit with your dog, even outside???? It's OUTSIDE. Â They don't even serve food, so what's the concern?
My guess is that previous inconsiderate patrons probably ruined it for everyone of us who is a good, respectful dog owner. Â "Allergies" are just a ridiculous excuse. Â
So we were forced to limit our visit to a quick growler fill-up. Â Service certainly not warm and fuzzy. Â When our growler settled, the beer came to almost an inch BELOW the fill line. Â Got the feeling that "outsiders" aren't welcome here.
Hop-Diggity Don't.
Port Townsend Brewery is, in my opinion, the best brewery on this side of the Puget Sound. I'm an IPA guy, and Port Townsend does many of them, and does them extremely well. The tasting room at the brewery offers an extremely pleasant experience. I've been twice now and have really enjoyed myself. The patrons are friendly, the employees knowledgeable, and the atmosphere quaint and comforting.
Hitting up the brewery for a pint or two in the late afternoon is the perfect ending for someone like me who likes to spend the occasional day off in Port Townsend.
While the live music can be annoying sometimes, this is a great early spot (it's just a tasting room & closes around 8pm) with some of the best beer I have tasted. It's the best small, local brewery, that's for sure. The Scotch Ale is truly a superior brew.
In the summer, it really is nice to be able to sit out in the grass area and soak in all that is the boatyard and talk with the folks that work in that port paradise. The folks that hang out there really do make the place -what am I saying, it's the beer; really amazingly good beer :)
Take home a "growler" and you'll be happy to return for a refill (and ring the bar's bell for a "surprise").
I go to the PT brewing company every time I visit PT. The bartenders have always been nice, and there is often a golden retriever hanging out! The beers are fantastic, especially the Hop Diggidy and the Rye IPA. This time around I bought a growler of Rye IPA to go, which made us almost miss the ferry but it would have been worth it even if we had missed the boat.
Review Source:Based on just one visit, by an out-of-towner:
Atmosphere is pretty boring, but the bartender and locals having a a beer were all friendly and eager to help us with suggestions for lunch, favorite beers, etc. Â
Every beer we tried (13!) was well-crafted. Â Especially appealing was the Chet's Gold -- not my normal style of beer, but really, really well done. Â They have quite the range of styles and I will definitely order their beers when dining out in Washington.
PT Brewery is an institution in Port Townsend. Â For many years the tasting room was a musty corner at the other end of the building containing the brewery. Â Often one could not squeeze in to cop a brew. Â A couple of years ago they built the expansive new shiny place they have now.
The Beer Garden is open during nice weather, and often on Fridays, Saturdays and so forth they have local talent making noise on a tented stage.
The make a range of beers from light to dark. Â I like the Scotch Ale myself; it is smooth and dark, not hoppie or bubbly. Â I stop in to refill my growler from time to time, and have been known to linger over a pint as well. Â
Whether you arrive at 12:01 pm when they open, like some of the guys from the boatyard, or come in for a beer and peanuts on a Friday evening in the beer Garden, you will find friendly people and good beer.
Meh. Â
So I've been finding Port Townsend Brewery (especially the Hop Diggity) everywhere lately. Â I've had quite a few of their beers as well as their barley wine. Â I've alway thought their beers were, okay- but not really all that good. Â Meh. Â So nevertheless while we were in Port Townsend we wanted to stop by the brewery itself. Â It was, about the same as the beer- pretty meh.
The beer was okay, but not spectacular or even good. Â The location itself was fine but the decor was generic and the atmosphere was downright annoying, insulting and for Port Townsend, a little ignorant! Â Maybe that was just the people that were there that day though. Â
Also, we were the only people it seemed in the whole place (it was a little busy) that were born after 1970. Â Nothing wrong with the older crowd- but something to note, if you are looking to be 20-something and a little annoying... this isn't the place!
Overall, not worth going back.
The brewery was near our hotel and there's not much to do in Port Townsend, so we paid a visit. It's right next to the boatyard. It's only a tasting room but they do serve bar snacks. They had all the beers on tap ranging in price between $4-$4.50. I ordered a pint of the Boathouse Bitter and my lady ordered the Winter Ale. Both were great, wish I had more time to try them all.
Review Source:Great little brewing company near the harbor. They have live music in the summer in their little biergarten off the back. Their tasting room is nice with beers on tap and the room is very cozy with games to play while you taste. Locals come in here after sailing or work. Their Brown Porter is pretty good. Reasonable prices too. Love their logo.
