My sister recently graduated from Oneonta and we decided to eat her for dinner after the ceremony.
The food was delicious to say the least. Â
I ordered the French onion soup to start, which could not have been better.
My main dish was the Seared Ahi Tuna with Seaweed salad and ginger risotto. Â Normally, I would want the Ahi tuna less cooked. But everything was perfect.
I took a bite of the Key Lime Pie for dessert and it was whipped with pieces of Lime. Â
The locals think this is an expensive restaurant, but the locals don't have jobs. Â They are students.
The average price of each dish is around 25 dollars. Â For the amount of food they serve and the quality, this is a steal. Â However, it might be a little too much for the average student who is eating Ramen.
When parents come up to school to visit their kids, this is the place to go. Â Your kid will be fed for the rest of the week.
It was exciting to get a new place here in Oneonta. Â I'm new here from California and I've been to many high end steak houses. Â I only gave three stars because as the three different cuts of beef we ordered were all very good, I was disappointed at the side dish selections and the quality as to which they were presented. Â Not much to choose or originality. Â Since you have to order all sides separate, it's a bit pricey for the quantity they give you. Â The only side I would order again would be the Roasted Beet Salad
Service was not great and the beer selection was not only limited for having so many breweries around the area but, they had ran out of a lot that we had chose. Â
Make reservations, since it's very small and the second decent restaurant in the area. Â I will go back for when I am craving Prime Rib or Filet.
Three stars because Prime 289 is a COMPLETE hit or miss (and I couldn't give it a 2 1/2 star rating). All in the same dinner. Â Hit and Miss. Â
The prices are high, but my family and I are willing to pay for ambience and really great food. Prime 289 has both... until... they come by with the roll selection and you choose ONE roll and the leave a table of 4 with ONE very small plate of dipping oil for your one roll each.
And then you get the calamari and it's the best you've ever had (and you've had a LOT!). Â Happy again. Â And you find a pretty decent glass of wine on the wine list for $5. Â Great. Â
And then your 18-year-old son orders a prime rib done medium rare...and the waitresss brings it to you and it is VERY well done. At a "steak house." Â The spectrum between medium rare and overly-well done is quite large, and even places where we don't hold much hope of the "chefs" getting it right seem to manage to hit it closer than they did at Prime 289, where ~ yes ~ we EXPECTED them to know how to fulfill an medium-rare order. Â
Since there are other new restaurants opening in Oneonta, we probably won't be returning to Prime. Â It's just too much to pay for a piece of beef to have it served so ignorantly to you completely the opposite of how you ordered it. Â Nice try...but there needs to be major improvements here.
The prices for such a restaurant seem to be out of place in a town such as Oneonta. Â I am originally from new york city and it seems as though Prime has the prices of a city steak place, but not so much on the quality side. Â As a college student, eating at this place would be a bit out of my budget, but i was curious of this new restaurant and was willing to spend the money. Â However the staff made it quite clear that college students are not welcome at this place of business. Â I encountered an unpleasant employee that did not even seem completely sure of the information she was giving me regarding their takeout menu and regular menu. Â The management also seemed to hide in the back and was not helpful either. Â Being a college student does not make me ignorant of what good food is. Â And it's probably not smart for a business like this to treat students in such a way either; we do make up about half of the towns population.
Review Source:I went here with SUPER high excited expectations ..and sadly was disappointed !
the atmosphere is really nice, and i felt like this was just what oneonta needed .
this is about all i can say in the +'s category.
Our waitress was alright, she was attentive but got my order wrong... and when there is only like 25 selections on the menu, it shouldn't be hard.
and i would blame the kitchen for this as well, but she seemed to know that my salad was wrong and brought it to me anyway ..and then almost smiled when i told her it was wrong ?!
the steak on the salad was just ok .. not super tender ...nor really flavorful.. and with the hefty price tag i would hope it would be better....and served right the first time.
i don't mind spending decent money to go out to eat, cause i love food and finding new spots to frequent... but the catty white-blond haired waitress and the average food ..mixed with the high price tag just turned me off.
I say go to Jay's Place on west end .. its always good there and the staff is friendly ...not to mention its less pricey ...
