We tried Pub West today for the first time, after driving past numerous times on the way to the ASC range. I honestly didn't expect much based on the look of the place. I was so wrong and am kicking myself for not stopping in sooner. The interior is comfortable and fun and the staff friendly and attentive. The menu is huge; apps, chicken, sandwiches, pizza and probably 30 different burgers. The food is phenomenal, hands down the very best burger I have ever had. I won't pass up an opportunity to stop in every chance I get from now on!
Review Source:After a range session at Aurora Sportsman's Club, I love to stop by Pub West to relax with a couple of beers and some good old fashioned pub grub.
Pub West is an unassuming looking little bar in a small town. Â There is plenty of parking in the gravel parking lot.
Walking in you are immediately immersed in a good old fashioned tavern atmosphere. Â It is dim with lots of wood and a couple of TVs, usually playing some sporting event. Â It reminds me of the bars in the town where I grew up.
I always sit at the horseshoe shaped bar which has about 16 comfy stools that are randomly numbered (I'll come back to that.) Trent always takes good care of me... starting me off with a glass of water because he knows I am coming from the range.
The beer selection is horrendous by my usual standards. Â Bud...check, Miller...check, PBR...check. Â The only saving grace for my taste buds is the Newcastle Brown on tap. Â Not my favorite beer, but it is refreshing enough for me to drink while enjoying this little gem of a bar in the middle of nowhere. Â I understand that the more frequent customers of Pub West are not demanding unique craft brews.
I don't know everything that is on the food menu, but of special note is the list of 50 different burger varieties. Â Sure, it is just a big juicy homemade hamburger with a ton of topping choices, but it is still fun and tasty. Â I have tried several of them. Â Watch out for the Jack Daniels burger. Â It comes with a mini shot of Jack in a plastic condiment cup to be poured over your burger. It is little things like this that I love about Pub West.
Lately, I have been in love with the Broaster Chicken. (<a href="/redir?url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.broaster.com%2Fbbetter.htm&s=f12027d1e35d8f4c81aa280771ebbf1c487e3ff872c89c0b382f596f9f0354bc" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.broaster.com/…</a>)  It comes with potato wedges, sour cream, cole slaw and a dinner roll.  I get the 4 piece mixed dark/white and I don't walk away hungry.  The price is very reasonable as well.  It is nice to get away from Chicagoland sometimes.
Remember the numbered bar stools? Â Well they are part of a mini lottery. Â Pub West is literally located right next to the railroad tracks. Â Whenever a train passes and there are more than 4 people at the bar, Trent will draw from a bucket of numbers until he hits one that matches the stool of a person sitting at the bar. Â That lucky person gets their next drink free! Â I don't necessarily need the free drink, but I really enjoy fun atmosphere that comes with little touches like this.
Another example of the great customer appreciation exhibited by Pub West is that if you come in wearing your ASC membership ID, you get a free beer. Â (You better order more than one! Â They need to stay in business after all.)
Because of the time of day that I come into Pub West it has never been very crowded and that is just fine with me. Â Whether I am talking to Trent or my fellow patrons at the bar, everyone is friendly and I always feel welcome at Pub West even though I only visit a few times a year.
I give this place five stars because it is a perfect example of a good, small town bar. Â I will be back.
They practically pay me to drink here.
If there are at least four people sitting at the bar drinking when a train goes by, the bartender (usually Trent) draws numbers (found on your bar stool) until a winner is called. Winner gets a free drink of whatever they're drinking, so if you're drinking a pitcher, you get another pitcher. It's totally a win-win!
Over 50 different kinds of burgers and Trent is awesome, probably one of the most friendly bartenders I've ever had the pleasure of knowing.
