$134 for nearly no food?
Don't let this place rip you off. Â They obviously rely on a fresh supply of suckers every night to stay in business, because no discerning person would eat here twice. Â That is real disrespect of people, to serve overpriced crap just because they can get away with it.
I love Ragged Point Inn. Â I do not like, nor recommend their restaurant under any circumstances!!! Â Terrible food, ridiculously high prices! Â We spent $134 for our family of four and all left hungry!
Eat in Cambria instead, at Robin's (American Fusion) or Las Cambritas (Mexican).
Details about Ragged Point Inn Restaurant:
Our family of four ate there last night. Â We ordered the steak tacos for an appetizer. Â Bland. Â TINY. Â Have they never heard of Mexican food? Â Just a flour tortilla with three small bites of tough, flavorless, overcooked mystery meat.
My son ordered the Salmon ($27) It was a TINY portion, not even enough for a 13 year old. Â He left hungry. Â My wife ordered the Sea Bass ($28). Â Dry, overcooked, flavorless. Â Literally one tablespoon of flavorless mashed potatoes, and about 8 green beans. Â My daughter ordered the chicken ($25). Â HOLY CRAP! Â It was....can you guess? Â TINY portion, approx 1/3 of a breast, and flavorless. Â I ordered the Ahi plate. Â So terrible it's not worth mentioning.
We are not big portion eaters at all, but we all left angry and hungry and $134 poorer. Â Don't make our mistake. Â The negative reviews are all true.
Hilariously bad. Service was awful, food was even worse. They apparently just hired a new chef and redid the menu, but maybe they should try again, because its hard to imagine this being much worse. Unfortunately, they have a captive audience and so it seems they really don't care. Would highly recommend eating further North or South.
Review Source:I got a BLTA. It was delicious. The prices, however, were outrageous. Although, a place like this, with no other food around, can afford to charge that much. Daniel recommends that you eat before you get to San Simeon.
The view from the restaurant was AMAZING! The service was mediocre.
At first I was going to give this place a pass because we were there on the 4th of July. But, then we got the food and since we were paying more than regular fare for this our expectations were higher. This place is so far our that they do have you over a barrel, you'd have to drive an hour either way up highway 1 to see anything else resembling a restaurant.
Service was mediocre, but perhaps overworked on the holiday (so they get a pass since they were friendly and apologetic). It took 20 minutes to get a glass of wine.
We had the calamari appetizer. There was hardly any meat in the dish, mostly greasy burnt breading.
When the food arrived the portions were absurd. The kids meals were huge, way too much for a 9 year old, let alone my 3 year old. 5 giant chicken strips and a plate full of fries. My wife and oldest ordered the chicken, one with lobster ravioli which was very good, the other with the lobster mac which was gross. The chicken however was well cooked and well seasoned. Over all those two entrees were worth almost worth the price ($25). I ordered the rack of lamb ($30). This was another absurdity. I have posted a photo to the page. Literally 4 bites of over cooked tough lamb from the bones. Again they were very accommodating and comped me my meal, if you could call it that.
Maybe we will give it another try. Also they leave the doors open and birds fly in and out of the dining area, could be a health hazard.
The food was VERY overpriced for portion sizes, quality, and taste. Â We spent a lot of money, but weren't knocked out with the dishes here (as we usually are with most other Big Sur restaurants). Â I would definitely stay at the Ragged Point Inn again, but would definitely opt to make the drive for better eats elsewhere!
Review Source:My kids took me here for Mother's Day. The brunch was mediocre at best. I had a crab cake benedict and I would swear they use frozen crab cakes. The potatoes were definitely frozen. My daughter had a frittata that was just gross. First of all, they should serve it with toast. Secondly, it was mushy, kinda runny, but not undercooked. Either the artichokes made it that way or it had too much cheese. Just yuck. The clam chowder, BLTA and fish and chips were good. Not spectacular, but safe to order if you come up here. Don't get your hopes up for good service, though. The host was weird, only way to describe him. My husband had made the reservation and he could recognize the guy he talked to on the phone, but they didn't have our name down. The waitress was completely uninterested. She had attitude. I wish I could be more specific, she just didn't try to connect with our party. Like another reviewer said, she probably just had us pegged for tourists (we're not, we live here).
In short, what you are really paying for is the lovely setting. If you really want to have a sit down meal, go for the clam chowder and BLT. It's not expensive, but it's not very good either. I think next time we will just go for the snack bar.
Why does a restaurant out in the middle on nowhere, who is dependent  on tourist traffic, treat that tourist like the plague? Poor service, timing, attitude and food slopped out because they think you are just passing through, so just deliver a meal and get the check paid? Well, I am not a tourist, I have a home here and this is my third visit with the common experience thread of "who cares". I love the ambience and setting which is hard to beat. I'd say pack your lunch, find a picnic bench so you can enjoy the food and the experience.
Review Source:This place has good food and outstanding service in a beautiful location. I especially recommend this place compared to other establishments along Hwy 1.
We had dinner and breakfast here. I was an extremely difficult guest, seeing as I couldn't find anything on the menu that was vegetarian, not spicy and not containing any garlic. I actually ended up asking the waitress if she could ask the kitchen whether it would be possible to whip up some pasta dish that would meet those criteria!
And they did! And it was the perfect dish: Pasta with huge chunks of vegetables, parmesan cheese, and a light wine sauce. I got a great dish that wasn't even on the menu!
I really appreciated this outstanding service -- I asked for way more than a restaurant should provide.
Concerning the other food we got - the burger wasn't as great as the service, so it may not be consistent quality in food. I wasn't too impressed with their house potatoes either, which seemed to be baked or microwaved and strangely lacking in consistency.
Breakfast in the morning was delicious. Service was friendly, albeit a bit slow (we had to walk inside to get our own refill on coffee). The strawberry pancakes were great.
This place gets 4 stars foremostly for the great service. The food was good too but comes in only secondary for me.
My wife and I spent one of the days of our honeymoon at the Ragged Point resort as we drove up the coast, and had both dinner and breakfast the next day there. Â
First of all, in the name of honesty, the main reason we - or most people - were there was to stay at the resort and take in the beautiful, sweeping views. Â That said, we found the restaurant to be a delightful, quaint, and unexpectedly casual treat.
Our dinner - served as we watched the sun set into the horizon - was good and satisfying. Â The menu was a bit truncated, but I had the Western Rib-Eye and Stuffed Mushrooms. Â The mushrooms were delicious, if a little on the overly oily side, and the steak was cooked to perfection as requested. Â It could have used a better seasoning, however. Â Our servers treated us very well, and we thoroughly enjoyed the hospitality.
The next morning we returned bright and early for breakfast, and sat outside. Â It was particularly charming that we were visited by an outdoor cat that the waiter informed us was named "Bishop" who ate his meal next to us. Â Everything about it was easy and comfortable. Â The food - eggs and sausage for me, fruit pancakes for my wife - was prepared nicely, and again the environment was amazing.
I would not call Ragged Point Inn Restaurant one of my best dining experiences, but I would call the entire time - Inn, Dinner, Breakfast, Hiking Trails and amazing views - one of my best life experiences. Â And for that, and it's feeling of comfort, I give the restaurant four stars.
Service was awful. I'm fairly certain we coerced the cleaning staff to get us our bill after waiting to see ANYONE for about 30 minutes. There were more than a few birds flying around the inside of the restaurant as well...with no staff members attempting to remove them at all. The steak sandwich and fries were yummy. Fish tacos were just alright. They have a beautiful view and a great patio. If you're on PCH and are extremely hungry at this point in the road, it won't ruin your day to stop by. Otherwise, go find something more delicious with some waiters!!
Review Source:We stopped by in the area to get some gas and needed some food for dinner. We ate junk foods all day and felt like needed some real food. My man asked if I wanted to check this place out, he came back with a menu in his hand. We both decided to get hamburgers and our friend some pasta. We had it to go so we can eat them in the RV.
My boyfriend got me a little surprise, a cup of clam chowder. It was very meaty (with bacon bits),clammy and creamy! Really delicious. I ate half of my burger as I was already half full, it was good as well. Our friend loved his pasta, they were very generous with the shrimps they put in it. Yep, he ate it all.
I so wanted to like this place. Â It has the potential to be a really great place. Â I mean just look at the location!
But alas, it fell short. Â The service was slow and just bad all round. My brother in law ended up getting us all our condiments. Â And they never quite came back around to get our drink order and when they did, they forgot one drink which I find hard to understand because there were only two people who wanted anything other than water. Â The service was just....basically I felt like nobody cared that we were there. Â
The scallop sliders were over cooked. Â
the seafood salad had potential but just seemed so plain. Â just slightly over cooked scallops and shrimp with calamari on nothing fancy lettuce and just ok dressing.
The crab melt was good but with it being so rich, it would have been great to have other choices than fries or potato salad. Â I just ended up feeling greasy and slightly queasy from the oil and the mayo from the potato salad. Â
The clam chowder was really good and the butternut squash soup was really outstanding. Â
The BF loved his bleu cheese burger. Â The fries were ok. Â not crispy. Â but ok.
Maybe the trick is to just eat from the stand they have outside? Â It seemed really popular. Â I dunno.
Appears to be a restaurant where management no longer cares. When we arrived, 3 parties were waiting at the host station, with no one really paying attention to any of us. As we were shown to a table, stacks of milk crates and silverware were piled on one table in the central seating area, as if this was a middle school cafeteria.
Food arrived and was very mediocre, not what I would expect for a $28 dollar steak. Dressings were watery, very little flavor in anything. One bright spot was the clam chowder, rich and tasty, quite good.
Service was good, bus boys and wait staff kept things flowing and tried their best. All this place would take is a decent head chef and a little attention to be a 4 star restaurant. Avoid.
RUDE HOST NAMED KYLE!
We were driving the PCH and decided to stop here for dinner. We walked in not long after sunset and asked the host, Kyle, if we could sit closer to the water side of the EMPTY restaurant. He asked if we were "on the list". When we said no, he told us it was to be used for other guests. Huh?
We were led to a seat at the front of the restaurant overlooking the highway. I ordered the sirloin; my husband a bacon burger. Both pretty decent, actually. At some point while we were eating we were given a check. Actually, it was unceremoniously tossed at our table. Not ours, and with someone else's credit card in it. We gave it back to Kyle who didn't even acknowledge the mistake or say thanks or even nod. My husband pointed this out to him and he actually sneered at us when he said "Whaddaya want me to say?"
This was all very odd since our waitress, as well as pretty much everyone else working here, was quite pleasant and accommodating. We even got our blueberry pie for free since our waitress was apparently feeling our pain about dear Kyle.
That section of the restaurant was still not full of their "preferred" guests as we were leaving. And as we were leaving Kyle sneered at us again as he VERY sarcastically told us to have a good evening.
My advice is that this restaurant, even though it's hooked up with an inn, gets a sign for the door that says "WELCOME...UNLESS YOU'RE A TOURIST"
Or better yet, get rid of Kyle!
We stayed at the hotel for one night for our honeymoon and so naturally, we dined here. I have to say, we had a great experience! Not sure why the bad reviews...
Anyhow, our server was very  nice. Did not seem busy or rushed whenever he came by, even though it was pretty busy; it was a Saturday night. He was always very attentive whenever he came over he answered all of our questions, accommodated our modification requests without issue, and even engaged in  a little small talk with us. This was nice because lately my husband and I have had some awful service experiences, being ignored, rushed, treated like we were inconveniencing the server. But not here. He was great.
The food was delicious!! We started with the stuffed mushrooms, oh my god! So good!! creamy and cheesy, yum! Next we split an apple and blue cheese salad. It was big, and full of blue cheese crumbles and apples. Alot of times when you order this type of salad the blue cheese in sparse and the apples too, but this salad was not lacking at all! I had the cilantro lime scallops with rice and vegetables. They were cooked perfectly and the flavor was wonderful! Mmmm....I want some more just remembering them. My husband had the bacon wrapped steak with potatoes and vegetables. He said it was very good ( I don't eat red meat so I did not get to try it). He was very happy and impressed with his dinner.
We were too full for dessert but from what we experienced I'm sure it had to be good. Overall, we were very impressed and happy with our dinner here. I would suggest stopping in for dinner if you're staying at the hotel or passing through.
Eew. Bad food, bad service.
Unfortunately i was served rotten apples soaked in sprite on my salad, with no apology, and that is why I'm giving this place 1-star!
The only positive things about this place were the views of the California coastline if you are outside and the warm bread.
The service here stinks as much as their outdoor bathrooms! Â My family recently attempted to eat here after a lengthy drive down the coast. Â We were famished and extremely excited to give this place our business. Â The scenery was beautiful and so was the restaurant.
We stood by the "Wait to be seated" sign for a while. Â Noticed a sign that mentioned the kitchen closes at 4:30. Â It was barely after 4:00 so we waited patiently. Â We saw a waitress walk by once, then twice. Â Gave her the benefit of the doubt that she simply didn't notice us. Â Then she looked directly at us and looked away and continued to pretend we didn't exist. Â Eventually we flagged down a table busser and asked if we could be seated. Â He said "sure, I'll go get the waitress." Â The same one who'd been ignoring us finally approached us (20 minutes after 4:00 at this point) and told us the kitchen closed down early and if we are hungry there is a snack bar outside." Â she wasn't kind nor apologetic about it - just rude.
Now if the waitress had approached us earlier with that information and still offered to seat us and maybe give us drinks to tide us over till the kitchen re-opened (the sign said 5:00) we would have happily sat down and enjoyed the scenery and patiently waited even though we were all ravenous. Â But at this point we were all so frusterated at the waitress's vile behavior that we chose to get a tiny snack from the snack bar and get an actual meal at our destination. Â This snotty waitress should be fired - she will lose the place business with her attitude.
By the way, the food at the snack bar was awful. Â The "homemade" chili tasted like it was straight out of a can and the tacos each came with a slice of American cheese - gross! Â Next time I take a trip down the coast I'll avoid this place like the plague.
Did I mention that the bathrooms were gross?
I will never know how the food is here. When I walked in I waited while the hostess carried on a lengthy conversation with a customer about which national parks were good and why they were being close. After waiting for her to finish her personal conversation I left. She apparently didn't want or care about our business.
If anyone is interested she was in her 50's with short brown/grey hair and overweight.
Review for indoor restaurant.
Waiter friendly and polite
Food quality equal to a Denny's
Lunch for three adults, no alcohol , no desserts $60.
A smart move, order  sandwiches (6.99) from there food stand and sit at one of there outside tables or chairs, and enjoy the views!
Restaurant clean
Restrooms clean
Ragged Point is a great place to stop on the 1. This was our second time here, once going North and once going South on the 1.
The views are breathtaking on the property and staff are friendly. We only had a bagel and espresso as we were driving but it was a great break.
If you are driving North this is a recommend spot to stop and fuel up or snack before you get to your next stop.
Had a nice breakfast.... pricey, but no surprise. Service was a little slow, but they had an unexpected large group. And half of their staff live on the North side of slide, so they can't get to work. Â The host was very friendly and helping out in every way. It is a beautiful location.
Review Source:What a great place to stop and eat along California's scenic Highway 1! Â The scenery is magnificent, the people there are very friendly, and their baked goods are amazing! Â I had some home-made muffins and a chocolate-mint latte there on my way from San Francisco to San Diego and it was definitely worth the stop. Â I will definitely be back if ever I am in that part of the state!
Review Source:My standards might be low, but there are an awful lot of people panning this place. Â Here's the deal:
* The scenery makes this place. Â Seriously, I've been to few restaurants that let you witness unspoiled California coastline the way this one affords. Â The clean air alone wins this place high marks.
* The food is around a B+. Â Which is pretty good, in my opinion. Â If you drove 250 miles from a city and you expected "Spago Point Ragged," your expectation might be a bigger problem than this restaurant.
* For a "captive restaurant," the prices aren't terrible. Â (If you think these prices are bad, try a Hyatt...)
* Service was good, on a Sunday. Â At least it was for us.
What's more, this place has a rather convenient price-discrimination policy:
1.) If you are passing through and want to spend some money and enjoy a nice view, dine-in.
2.) If you're on a budget, they have some "value eats" in the area near the gas-station.
If you're staying here, and getting to Cambria is impractical, then I see how this would be a problem. Â (The hotel is not recommended, in that case.)
PS - There's no "yelp about a gas pump" feature, but I do want to say -0.5 stars for charging $1.20 more per gallon than they should at this place. Â Gougers!
So, it's unfortunate that this beautifully located restaurant is not managed better. Â I've been here on several occasions. Â Several years ago when I lived in San Luis Obispo, my mom and I would come on Xmas or Thanksgiving for a yummy holiday meal. Â BACK THEN, this restaurant had fabulous food, which is why we returned several years in a row. Â
Several years passed before we returned again. Â Then over Thanksgiving weekend of 2010 (few months ago), my fiancee surprised me by making an overnight reservation there (had never stayed at the Inn). Â So we had dinner there in the evening. Â Server was lacking in personality and in skill. Â I ordered the pork loin with house potatoes...but first asked what the house potatoes were. Â He said they were red potatoes cut up, a bit like breakfast potatoes. Â That sounded good. Â But, what he brought me was pork loin with mashed potatoes. Â Um, huh? Â So I asked why these were mashed potatoes and not the house potatoes. Â He took my plate back to the kitchen, came back with it, still with the mashed potatoes, set it down, said they didn't have house potatoes, and walked off. Â Um, what? Â I would've expected him to one, let me know before serving me, and two, after serving me something I didn't order, give me other options, so I am still the one ordering my dinner. Â I waited a while before he came back around, and asked if I could have rice instead (had too many mashed potatoes during Thanksgiving!). Â He said he could do that and brought me a side of rice (which tasted like boxed rice). Â That was the snaffoo of the evening. Â Oh, the pork was really good, btw.
We also ate there for breakfast. Â Our waitress was friendlier than our waiter the night before, but again, it seemed as if she could use more training. Â Both servers had a habit of not stopping completely at our table when asking us something or talking to us. Â I have to say, I don't think I have ever experienced that at a restaurant before, so it took me a while to put my finger on what seemed off. Â Anyway, so there was that, then there was the overpriced breakfast, and then there were the over-cooked omelets. Â Yes, this review makes me seem like a complainer, but that's because there were things to complain about. Â Both my fiancee's omelet and mine were overcooked. Â
SO, after all that, we were still willing to give them another chance (shame on us!). Â We actually got engaged there Thanksgiving weekend, so over Christmas my fiancee's parents and brother flew from Canada to California to meet my mom. Â We thought it would be sentimental if we took them to Ragged Point so they could see where we got engaged (gorgeous views). Â I called ahead to make a reservation and express my concern regarding our previous experiences. Â I was told that they were trying to iron things out. Â So we took our (last) chance and the 6 of us went to dinner there to celebrate our engagement. Â Luckily, we got a very friendly waiter. Â (The waiter we previously had was there, and we were happy not to have him.) Â But the kitchen didn't seem to have it together. Â It took a forever for our appetizers to come out. Â And they couldn't seem to get the specials right (if there were specials, then what they were, then they changed, then my mom ordered the fish special, then there was only one order of it left and someone else already ordered it, then she ordered something else, then they did have the fish after all). Â It took almost three hours to eat there because of the slow service. Â At this point I don't even remember the food! Â
So, let me tell you, I will not be going back to Ragged Point Restaurant any time soon! Â I am planning on having my wedding there - only because the event coordinator has an entirely separate staff and chef - because of how absolutely gorgeous it is there. Â But for dinner the night before the wedding, we'll be eating somewhere else!
The three stars are based upon the meal itself and the convenience in terms of location near Hearst Castle, but that is about it. Â The prices were steep ($13 for ham and eggs), at least for breakfast and the server was a little out of it but the meal was served quickly and was very tasty.
We had the ham and eggs which came with coin shaped potatoes with onions and a choice of toast or muffin. Â I ordered the sourdough toast but received a cranberry muffin instead (common mistake due to the extreme similarity). Â The ham was actual ham steak, was extremely flavorful, and definitely the best part of the meal. Â The potatoes and onions were fantastic. Â We also ordered a Denver omelet which was rich and gooey. Â Again, the meal was great but the prices were ridiculous.
Since this place is only 15 miles from Hearst Castle, I guess they get enough desperate business to charge those prices. Â They also had a snack shop that supposedly had breakfast sandwiches but it didn't open until 10am (why wouldn't the quick and convenient snack shop serve breakfast hours after the restaurant opened its doors and right before lunch?).
This restaurant serves up pedestrian food at pretty high prices. At dinner, no one in my party of six was satisfied with their meal. The fish was dry, and the vegetarian pasta was very unimaginative. (Speaking of which, there were very few vegetarian selections for dinner, and zero good ones.) On the upside, the breakfast was better than the dinner: this places can make a decent omelette. And our servers were generally friendly and helpful.
Review Source:I don't normally frequent obvious tourist traps, but we were hungry and I didn't know what was ahead so we stopped here. Â Food was good, prices weren't great, but if you factor in what they were charging at the walk up next door, and prices they were charging for the hamburgers in the restaurant for a nicer sit down experience, they were almost the same.
Service was ok, ok as in eh.. at the end the waitress completely forgot about us, to the point where we had to walk up to get the bill. Â Seems to be a consistent theme here, I'm guessing the manager doesn't treat his employees so well. Â
Nice place to look at the views, a little trail down the way.
UPS: Â
Great view, scenery, location
DOWNS: Â
We ordered a latte, a regular coffee and the "top for two" (sirloin steak with potatos for two people). Â It was very pricy but it was supposed to be from hearst ranch (I doubt it and plan to contact Hearst ranch to let them know).
The latte had a very strange taste to it. Â The regular coffee did also. Â We traded and agreed that both tasted like 'burnt' coffee (the taste coffee gets when its made in a pot and sits on a warmer for hours). Â The food looked ok but wasn't. Â The potatos were obviously re-heated in a fryer, the top sirloin was very tough and very poor quality. Â
The service was bad...I'm not surprised others have said the same. Â I don't expect much but teh most basics from a restaurant when it comes to service and they failed.
Since I love to travel, I would recommend this place FOR DRINKS ONLY!!! Drinks LIKE PEPSI or if its alcoholic, something that comes bottled. Â If it wasn't for the view from the patio, I'd give this place a one star. Â Actually, I just can't do it...too many stupid kids with stupid reviews and I actually see a 5 star rating here...this place is very over-priced, poor service and poor quality foods that are poorly cooked. Â 1 star at best.
Worst part? Â It wasn't even that busy, despite it being 6pm on a Friday...not much of a local hangout I suppose.
Lunch time was fast approaching and after missing the exits for Cambria and San Simeon, we turned off at the Ragged Point exit, not knowing what we'd find - if anything. Â The first thing we spotted was the Ragged Point Inn and its dining room. Â Eureka! Â Anything looked good at this point since we were famished. Â This turned out to be a gem of a find. Â The grounds of the inn are beautiful, and the outdoor dining area sports a magnificent view of the cliffs and ocean. Â It was a nice respite to enjoy lunch, which was very tasty, next to a small waterfall and pretty garden. Â Also, our waitress was super nice and went out of her way to take photos for us. Â The inn looks like a nice relaxing place to stay, especially for a family with kids. Â Would recommend this place for a solid meal with a beautiful backdrop.
Review Source:This was really hard to rate because the food was absolutely excellent but the service was absolutely horrible. After my friend and I spent the day at Hearst Castle we stopped here for dinner last Saturday night. We walked in, and there was another couple waiting in front of us to be seated. I noticed there was no hostess. Someone did stop by and sat the couple in front of us. I thought they would come back for us, but they never did. Instead the waiters would walk pass us.
I should have left right there and then, but I didn't know what else was around.
Finally the guy from the cafe part said he doesn't know what's going on and sat us after 10 mins of waiting. (The restaurant wasn't that busy).
After we sat service was a little better. We ordered the stuffed mushrooms, chicken and vegetable soup, stuffed chicken and steak. The steak was ok nothing special, but everything else was to die for. I timed from the minute we walked in to the minute we left. We were there for a good 1 hour and 40 mins. The food took a little long but I didn't care.
I would go back here, and recommend my friends to come here, because of the food. Hopefully the service would be better next time.
We needed this stop after driving through Big Sur. Â It's about 20 miles north of Hearst Castle and the beach with all the elephant seals. Â Â The best part about this stop is it has big clean bathrooms, large parking lot, space for kids to runaround, tables and chairs if you want to spread out your own picnic, small convenient store, cafe to get your espresso, and a fast food counter to get hamburgers, fries or ice cream.
Review Source:I think the success of this place has more to do with LOCATION than anything. Â Hey, captive audiences are good for business!
We stopped in since this is one of the very few glimmers of civilization along this stretch of PCH. Â It was about 7pm and a good time to refuel. Â We went in and ordered a couple of coffees and a carrot cake. Â The coffee was alright. Â The carrot cake was tasty but not mind-blowingly delicious, but at $7 it was pretty steep (again... captive audience effect). Â
The servers were nice and welcoming, so it's not a bad place to stop in.
What's in a name?
The restaurant at the Ragged Point Inn is simply called 'Ragged Point Restaurant'. Â What a boring name for a restaurant in such a spectacular place.
Located about 30 minutes north of Hearst Castle on HWY 1 is Ragged Point CA home of the Ragged Point Inn and Resort. Â Now words like 'resort' are used differently when you are so far removed from civilization. Â In these remote locations 'resort' typically means there is more to do than rent a room. Â In this case, there are dining options.
With floor to ceiling windows and  perfectly situated to take advantage of incredible ocean views as well as the resort grounds is the Ragged Point Restaurant.  If the weather is nice, skip the windows and sit outside.  Open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner this is your ONLY dining option within about 20 minutes distance in either direction.  Yes, there is a burger stand on the grounds as well but it is only open til 6pm. Â
During my 4 day/3 night stay at the Ragged Point Inn I dined at the restaurant for breakfast and dinner. Â In both instances I was thoroughly pleased with my experience. Â For breakfast the granola is just what you would expect from such a rugged locale. Â I don't know for certain, but I suspect they make their granola fresh in the oven each morning. Â There was such a consistent and sweet honey like texture that I can't imagine it came out of a box...delicious.
Likewise, the standard bacon and egg breakfast lived up to its iconic status. Â I take mine scrambled and they delivered them hot and fluffy. Â Thick ass bacon strips and delicious sourdough bread completed the plate. Â One thing that doesn't disappoint in Big Sur is the quality of bread. Â Everywhere I went and at every meal the bread was top notch...better than anything that comes to mind in So. Cal. Â Last but not least, they take their coffee seriously in these parts. Â No basket filter brews here, piping hot, robust, bold espresso (add some hot water and you got a good ass Americano).
My dinner experiences were a bit different. Â One night I didn't have much of an appetite and went the 'salad' route. Â My seafood salad was full of so much seafood I couldn't finish it; fresh calamari, shrimp, and scallops were in far too much abundance for me to handle. Â I tried, but I was so stuffed afterwards that I thought I would split open like a harpooned mammal of some sort. Â Gluttony won out on that night. Â On another night we raced back from Big Sur proper and pulled into the parking lot just as the restaurant was scheduled to close. Â As the staff quickly become familiar with anyone staying longer than 1 night they told me not too worry and offered up a huge and delicious chicken salad (not on the menu) for a measly $5 dollars along with a super tasty hamburger dinner plate complete with curly fries and delicious cole slaw. Â
When I told them I wanted to take it all back to my room (no room service at the Ragged Point Hotel) they packed it all up in a manner you would receive your room service order at any standard hotel...they even walked me around to the coffee counter so I could pick out some cheesecake for dessert. Â
Service was fair and consistent. Â The staff tended to be a bit more casual than you would find at similarly priced restaurants elsewhere. Â The vibe was more homely than upscale, definitely nothing worth a point deduction.
On the one hand you don't really have options on where you can eat, on the other hand you really don't need'em. Â But if you happen to be a guest at the hotel, they'll make you feel like a friend in no time.
All things considered, you really can't ask for much more.
