As someone who lived in Bluefield for a few years and comes back to visit at least once a year, I'm pretty familiar with what this town has to offer in terms of nightlife, and I have to say that The Ramsey School is just about your best bet. Right up a block from downtown Bluefield, this five-story brick elementary school operated for about 60 years before closing in 1987. Now it operates as a restaurant/nightclub/coffeehouse. I dropped by recently to sing some karaoke, and I felt right at home. When you walk through the lowest entrance, you'll find a little sports bar atmosphere that includes a couple of pool tables and comfortable seating; it attracts a slighty older local crowd. You might think that's all there is, but through a set of doors, past some VERY clean and modern bathrooms and up the stairway is ANOTHER somewhat trendier looking bar, a dance area, and a restaurant space. The upstairs bar gets a slightly younger crowd late at night. Be advised that as of this writing, bars in this particular county allow smoking, but The Ramsey School is remarkably well-ventilated. Check out their website (theramseyschool-dot-com) to find out more.
Review Source:This place rocks! Â The atmosphere is fantastic, from the decorating in the bar (gorgeous and modern funky) Â to the music the people and the food. The owner actually refurbished an old elementary school that was built in 1927 and turned the main floor into a two level bar and on the other side a coffee shop, they also have a HUGE banquet facility in the old theater/auditorium, absolutely amazing! Right now they are only open from Wed-Sat in the bar and have something fun going on every night. I was there when they had Karaoke and I have never seen anything like it, there were people singing while others danced and the owner was there all night greeting people it was just such a great atmosphere. I can't say enough good things about it!
