Love this place. Amazing BBQ, friendly staff. Great for kids. Can't beat it in the area.

I came into this place with high expectations.  So my review may be a little jaded.

My very first experience with their BBQ was at Wingapalooza in Springfield a few years back.  Their wings were outstanding!  With that in mind, my buddies and I made it a point to plan a golf outing in Aurora so that we could come here.

I'll start with the service.  I can't remember the name of the lady who served us, but she was great.  She clearly had been there for a while, because I enquired about the wings and she said that they haven't had them for some time because they did not sell well.  She was prompt, kept our drinks full, and we all really enjoyed her company.  For this, they get one extra star, and I will probably be back to give the bbq another shot.

One of my companions and I both went with the burnt ends.  I chose the potato salad and baked beans for sides.  He went with cole slaw instead of the potato salad.  The other two went with the buffet.

The burnt ends  really disappointed me.  They came out covered in sauce and still ended up being pretty dry.  If I had known they were served with sauce, I would have passed, or just asked to get them dry.

The potato salad is made in house and is clearly mayo based.  I like mayo, but they took it to the next level.  It was still pretty good, but just looking at my cup of mayo with pieces of potato made me feel guilty, so I couldn't finish it.

The baked beans are really pretty fantastic.  They had a great spicy tangy flavor.  I'm a fan and I recommend them!

As we were leaving, I asked for the opinions of the others in my group and each responded the same.  "Meh, it's ok."

Maybe I can be wowed like I was on my next visit.  I'll keep you posted.

Omg! I have driven past this place at least a million times and had never stopped. Why? Oh Why had I never stopped?

We ordered the Memphis Combo with pulled pork and brisket and coleslaw on top. We had the slaw on the side and beans. We also ordered some ham to go.

The pulled pork & brisket are hands down the best I have ever had. Brown sugar based sauce with a hint of vinegar. The pulled pork were big chucks with right amount of sauce and the brisket thin and tender.

The side of beans had enormous chucks of meat in them and were slap your momma good. I literally grabbed the side if beans and devoured them. My hubby said "That is new you have never grabbed baked beans and eaten them". I said "Oh Sorry. Here try them." He then polished off the last couple of bites.

The ham he had to go was cold that is how it is severed to go. We open the package and took a couple bites. Very good smoke on it.

This will be a must stop from now on.

Nice local bbq favorite. Old rustic southern decor is neat and fits in with the surrounding area.  I am glad they expanded a couple years ago - so it's not always such a chore to find a place to sit.

I've only had pulled pork sandwich and bbq nachos - both were great!

Two things I don't really care for.... one is the super bright fluorescent lights in the lobby - really kills the atmosphere since the dining rooms are rustic wood with incandescent lighting.  The other thing I don't care for is the buffet. Something about the presence of a buffet knocks any restaurant down a few pegs in my book. They should put a sign on their buffet and call it "the hog trough".  I'm sure the people who like to eat from the buffet would think it was funny and the people who don't would find it fitting.

I definitely recommend this place.  It's not too expensive either!

We stopped here during a 2 week road trip and decided we would definitely recommend you stopping here and giving them a try. We had the dinner buffet and were able to sample smoked chicken, briskett, pulled pork, pulled beef, smoked sausage, beans, slaw and more. The food was very flavorful and the meat was really  good.  The place is a small town establishment where everyone seems to know everyone else - very friendly and welcoming.

Richard's boasts small town feel and awesome service. I ordered the Richards style beef brisket jumbo sandwich. I would have liked to taste the meat a little more, but the sauce was great. I also had a side of baked beans. They were tangy and delicious with bits of pork. If I lived in Missouri, I would surely eat here again.

I'm very down on Midwestern food, but this place is an oasis.  The BBQ nachos in this joint are a religious experience. I've been going there for years, it's the only thing I order. Why do they have menus? They should just ask customers how they want their BBQ nachos made up. The size of the nachos is eye-boggling. None of that "stuff on the top, nachos underneath" crap here - they layer it. Cheese, awesome hickory BBQ sauce, and pulled pork or beef. Over and over, and over. The full order double meat is probably 4000 calories, and enough to give anyone a heart attack. Order and share. Intense!

Each time we visit family in the area, we try to hit Hawg Wild. Good BBQ. Had a pulled pork sandwich with fries. Tasty. And I love that they have extra sauce right there on the table.

Very kid friendly, with crayons at the table.

Get the tea with half sweet, half un. Perfect.

We went around lunchtime and it was busy, but not too crowded. It's definitely a favorite with the locals.

I found this place while researching for a trip to MO with my sister and mom.  We made sure that our route took us right past Richard's Hawg Wild.  We were not disappointed.  Even their small meal was plenty to fill us up.  The food was so tasty.  We would definately visit here again if in the area.

On Christmas eve, my parents and I went to Aurora to dine out on our way to Christmas Eve service at the church in Marionville. I had expressed a desire to go to Hawg Wild, in keeping with my personal mission to review every barbecue place I can. (There's a reason that my tag line is "OMG, BBQ FTW!")

Prices were good, service was friendly, and Richard himself was standing near the next table, conversing with a large family seated there. He seemed to be a very jovial and friendly fellow, and from what I heard of his conversation it would have been interesting to get to talk to him a while myself.

One black mark against the service: the waitress forgot to leave straws with us after she brought our drinks, and we had to wait until she brought the food back to get them from her.

I took photos of our food and uploaded them to this review; we seemed to get quite a lot for the money we spent. My parents were satisfied with their senior platters (It's funny; back before he turned sixty, my Dad swore up and down he would never take advantage of senior discounts, as they seemed a little too much like welfare to him--but now watch him. :) and I had the brisket in sauce.

In retrospect, I should probably just have had the sliced brisket, so I could put the sauce I wanted to on it. It was good, and more than I could eat, but I think I would have preferred the meat "naked "so I could put the spicier barbecue sauce on it. It was served not with buns, but with Texas Toast the way barbecue SHOULD be.

Their beans were good--not too sweet, the way a some places have them, but tangy.

Although we were here for dinner, it's interesting to note that unlike a lot of lunch/dinner restaurants, Hawg Wild is also open for breakfast.

HALF order, CHILD size chicken nachos with everything. That's me, I'll be stuffed. I'll admit, when I first thought of BBQ chicken with Memphis style sauce, plus cheese....well, I was conflicted. Since I've figured this out,, though, this is my order every time. The beans here are to die for (I'll have a bite of yours), the brisket is out of this world. No one complains about eating here, not even pennypinchers or hungry teenagers. Watch for music and specials in the summertime, the restaurant is right on the route to the lake. It is casual but not icky, fun and quirky but not overdone. Very local, you will see real live local people (I mean that in a good way) eating here, cooking, serving...and oh yeah, SWEETTEA. If you've been down south you know what I mean. You won't go away hungry. They do catering, too.
