Great place with amazing customer service. In town from Alabama visiting family and they take me out to this very cool place. Food and atmosphere was awesome, run by sweet family that I got to meet as I placed my order. The best service came when I got choked on a chip and the heroic owner saved my life with the heimlich maneuver! I struggled and was getting no air till he calmly took care of me. You are the man! Best wishes with your new restaurant I owe y'all big time!!!
Review Source:Feb 2013 update -- Good news! Rio Grande Grill has reopened under new ownership, but basically THE SAME GREAT MENU. Former owner Ben Rushing is still very involved for a while, which should help the new owners rebuild the business. tHE New owners are trying to extend the hours beyond 11-2 lunch (to Friday and Sat dinner with live music), but I don't know if that's working. We will continue to enjoy the enchiladas suiza, fish and brisket tacos, and BBQ ... and run into friends still seeking more good lunch places in Harlingen. We wish the new owners luck  overcoming their challenging location (on Van Buren next to Gutierrez Park). Once you discover Rio Grande Grill, YOU WILL RETURN.   John & Janice
Review Source:Wonderful smells as you walk in the door. Went to a special event with a special menu. Lovely meal. Fabulous friendly service. All was very good. Tomato corn soup was yummy. Greens, goat cheese, beets and grapefruit salad was tasty. Chipotle spaghetti with mesquite smoked meatball was pleasantly spicy. Smoked meatball was surprisingly unique and well seasoned. Dessert of chocolate semifreddo with chocolate chile sauce was a decadent ice cream dream. Â Only imperfect thing was the spaghetti was a bit over done for my taste. Â Will definitely be back to try the regulr menu.
Review Source:Oh my goodness, what wonderful BBQ. If you come in early or late ask if you can see the smoke house. It's just out back and it is seriously delicious smelling. The pulled pork and chopped brisket are yummy. The fish tacos are divine. The tortilla soup is scrumptious. Enjoy lunch but don't plan on supper, Ben is home then with his feet up for a well deserved rest.
Review Source:Jason is correct. Â I will just list my favorites.
Fish tacos. Grilled on wood fire. Outstanding. Comes with homemade mango salsa.
Chicken enchiladas poblanos. Smoked chicken or pulled pork or brisket. Â
Best I have ever had in 45 years of Tex Mex in the area.
Wife says the iced tea is good and I like the hand squeezed limeaid.
Pulled pork sandwich.
If you can make it on Friday, fried shrimp or fish.
Owners Ben and Sherry are great hosts. Â Call you by name on about visit number 3. Â
Only potatoe salad I like. Â Beans a la charra is more like a soup with bits of bbq brisket in it. Great.
My son gets the brisket. Â Oh, and pork ribs are verry nice.
***Dont leave without trying the tortilla soup!
We are so lucky to have this place in our small town.
This little gem of a restaurant is not easy to find, but when you do, you'll be delighted. The menu is limited to BBQ and Tex Mex but they do their own smoking right out back and the home made coleslaw is amazing. Â
My favorite dish is the brisket enchiladas made with shredded brisket rolled in the thinnest lightest flour tortillas I've ever experienced. It's almost like a brisket blini. These smokey, savory enchiladas are bathed in a mild but very flavorful salsa verde. Served with a side of the amazing coleslaw and some of the best Charro beans in town, it's a memorable meal. The price for this dish, a canned soda and a free sample of rice pudding was under $10.
Their beverage policy is very liberal with free refills even on canned soda. There is no alcohol. It's very busy at lunch time and you might have to share part of the red-checkered plastic covered picnic table with friendly strangers, but it's part of the fun and charm of the place.
From Harrison turn right on "D" Street then right on Van Buren which is one way.  It's on the right  before La Placita.
I can not believe this place has not been reviewed.
After literally crossing the entire country from coast to coast, this place has stood out as the best mexican food experience hands down. The unfortunate thing is that I live over a thousand miles away from this place.
However next time I find myself in San Antonio, I will literally drive down for another meal at this place.
Wow what a truly amazing experience, the smoked meat with the authentic mexican style meat.
I have never had better.
