I used to love the Brown Trout back in the day--Hey Lynda! Of course those days are gone. After a change of ownership the place is now called the River Rock Grille. The new owners have spend some dough upgrading the lighting and seating. The whole place seems brighter and cleaner. Â
The menu is a nice mix of fancy appetizers and entrees and more standard bar fare. Everyone can find something to like.
I had the brie en croute appetizer which was fantastic. Really great. The pastry was light and fluffy and the brie was melted to perfection. I will definitely have it again when I go back.
For an entree I had the perch basket. Huge portion of fish and hot fries for a cheap price. Everyone in my party was impressed by the portion sizes and the reasonable prices. The poppy seed coleslaw that came with my perch was really great as well.
The old place looks great and the food is good. Congrats to the owners.
BTW: all the weird dance club lighting is gone, as is that weird, dark stage. I was there once when a guy sang the Wreck of Edmund Fitzgerald in total darkness on the stage, as he strummed a guitar. Spooky.
We went there last night with friends. I read the reviews for the River Rock Grille and the Italian restaurant a few hundred feet north. What we found was a pricey menu that was not exceptional. The beer was good and reasonably priced. Service was spotty. As far as the food - there was nothing to make me come back. The Italian restaurant north of the Grille had more cars in the lot - I should have taken that as a sign.
Review Source:We used to frequent this restaurant when it was under previous management, but we like it even more now. The food was delicious, well-prepared, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the prices were reasonable. It has a very varied menu much more so than the previous company. If you're in Indian River Michigan like this restaurant.
