We have been to Ponca City several times over the last few years on our way to Bike Rallies, and usually stay overnight. Â We are always looking for somewhere to get a decent meal that isn't fast food.
I have read very useful review on Yelp before and decided to see what reviews were available for Ponca City. Â Wow, was I glad I did. Â In all the trips we have made through Ponca City I never saw or even heard about the Rusty Barrell Supper Club, even though we have passed close by it on every trip!
It is hard for me to get my husband to try new places, but, we had a friend riding with us and so he was willing to give it a try. Â The reviews on Yelp where great and very, very helpful! Â If you just pull into the parking lot you get the impression the place is closed down.
My husband tried the door, which was locked, I told him you "have to ring the doorbell". Â The door was opened almost immediately by a very friendly lady who didn't seem to mind that the three of us were in "biker gear". Â
The place is exactly how it has been described in other reviews and the waitstaff was very friendly. The salad bar is wonderful! Â Not huge, but, it had a lot of different options and was well stocked and everything was fresh even though we were there past nine o'clock. Â Our steaks were all cooked exactly right and very tasty! Â The baked potatoes and little loaf of bread were good also. Â A perfect baked potato, even at the late hour! Â I have gone to other places where they have run out of baked potatoes or the one you get is so over-baked and dry that you wished they had been sold out! Â We were the last patrons to leave and didn't even really realize it until we got up to leave. Â We were seated on the upper level, which we really liked. Â No one had said a word to us about needing to close. Â We apologized for being the last the leave and the hostess was very friendly and told us no problem, they would all be there for quite awhile cleaning up. Â Very nice! Â Especially since we looked pretty rough in our "biker" clothes!!
The Rusty Barrell Supper Club is a true hidden gem in Ponca City! Â We had a great meal, with great service and will most definitely go back soon!!
This was one of the most interesting restaurant experiences I've had in a while.
You park and can immediately smell the steaks. And they do smell good. You enter through a back alleyway of a shopping center and the door isn't even unlocked. You have to ring a doorbell to get inside? Okay.
You enter and within about two feet of you is the hostess stand, a salad bar, and a big open char pit full of sizzling meat. Yum. Looks great. A narrow staircase takes you upstairs to a loft type area that overlooks the bottom floor. Up there is a waiting area, more tables, and a tiny bar. The décor is very rustic.
The menu is very basic: go on the right night of the week and you can get Buffalo, Prime Rib, and some other random stuff. But I did not go on the right night. But that was okay, because you can still have a variety of steaks, swordfish, chicken, and some other chop (pork or lamb, it escapes me). Everything comes with the salad bar, a baked potato, and a little loaf of bread.
The salad bar was a classic steakhouse style salad bar. Ice cold plates on the side, take one and go. And go back as many times as you want. Basic lettuce, basic dressing, and lots of the routine condiments: olives, kidney beans, garbanzo beans, dried bacon bits, hard boiled eggs, shredded cheddar, and a whole lot more. There were also a couple pasta salads, potato salad, beets, etc. Nice salad bar, excellent salad.
The steaks come out on very hot plates and do not disappoint. Nice generous sized cuts, tasty, cooked just right, juicy, and really good. Seasoning wasn't spread as evenly as it could be, but still just excellent steak. The baked potato came pre cut with butter; no other toppings were offered though there was some sour cream on the table. The baked potato was great, very tasty, very good.
I do suggest however to stick to the basics here. Enjoy your meat seasoned, potato as it comes, and salad as you like. As other reviewers note, if you ask for sautéed mushrooms, you get a bowl full of what are clearly canned button mushrooms. Hardly worth it. The cheesecake looked straight from a freezer, defrosted. This is not a gourmet place. Trying to turn your meal up a few bits into being "gourmet" will likely result in disappointment. If you want gourmet in Ponca City, well, I don't know what to tell you. Wichita, Tulsa, and Oklahoma City are all within about an hour...
Overall had a great meal at this place. Neat atmosphere and really good food. Definitely a place I'd recommend to others and definitely a place I'd return to eagerly. A unique experience with an interesting atmosphere, good service, great food.
A unique one-of-a-kind steakhouse. It is oddly located on the backside of a Ponca City strip-mall and up a short alley like sidewalk from the parking lot. Once your in the first door, you still need to ring a bell and are then let in to the restaurant through a second door.
The decor is a lot of wood and the restaurant has two levels each with its own salad bar. There is a full bar in the upstairs section. The upper section over looks the main floor where a circular fire fit is in the middle of the room for all to see--this is where all the beef magic takes place.
I guess when the place originally opened it truly was a supper club and you basically brought your own meat and used the communal grill.
My rib-eye was cooked to perfection, tender and juicy, complemented with an excellent baked potato, salad bar and fresh bread.
I will definitely return on my next trip to the Ponca City area.
Finding this place can be like finding some trendy club in NYC I imagine. It's basically behind a strip mall down this little sidewalk right up to the door. No real way of knowing where you are headed until you're right there. This place must be a part time casino because you have to be buzzed in to get through the front door. Inside it's pretty cool, rustic looking decor, lots or barrels of course. Not a big selection for the menu because this is a steak and potatoes kind of place. Order your meat which they cook on this cool grill near the entrance and hit up the salad bar while you wait.
The staff is always really nice and friendly here so if you're in town for some reason check out one of the only really good dinner places around.
