For the past two summer's I've driven past the Sand's Edge on the way to Lake Mac. It's always looked closed or maybe even abandoned. No one on the deck and no cars within sight. On our last trip out to the lake however, one of the park attendants mentioned it as a dinner place. Sure enough as we drove by we could see a neon sign lit up indicating that at the least they supported a particular beer.
We rolled up into the back and see that the parking lot is indeed obscured from the main road driving by. Lots of cars as well; a good sign! My buddy and I opened the small screen door (no signs indicating it's the main entrance... looks more like the cook's entrance) and start talking about how this place looks good and that there are lots of people.
We seat ourselves and a waitress comes up to us and tells us it's going to be an hour for food. Fine. We order a hamburger and a chicken finger basket. Pretty standard fare right? We also order a can of budweiser and a mountain dew. 20 minutes later, not a sign of food nor beverage. We flag down our waitress and she says she completely forgot.
Refills were treated the same way. Completely ignored for the most part. We actually got another waitress to come help us. They have a popcorn machine sitting there - the smallest gesture to apologize for taking far too long for any kind of "real" food.
The food arrived 45 minutes after ordering. Under promise, over deliver. They succeed in one aspect at least. My buddy ordered the hamburger and described it as a hockey puck. It was charred, far above well done, and tiny. He ate half and couldn't do the rest. My chicken fingers were oily and didn't have any real flavor to them aside from oil and salt... not even a good oil & salt flavor. The fries were greasy but good.
The check never came, after 20 minutes of being "done" so I went up to the counter to get it. Then no one came to pick up our payment, so again I had to go up and take care of it myself.
Let me also add that a big draw to this establishment is the game of Keno (lottery/bingo game) they run above the bar.
Ridiculously bad service and bad food. Stay away if you're visiting. The locals seem to like it just fine.
