This is kind of why I hate Yelp. People with all different kinds of tastes/palates rating a place and how can you know if it's really compatible with yours? These high star ratings for this place must be from fast-food lovers. Â There is not much on the menu that is not DEEP FRIED. Â Sometimes twice, just for good measure. Â If KFC is your idea of good food, then you'll love this place. Â The eclectic ambience of the place which is like being in the American Pickers warehouse and the good selection of beer almost made up for the disgusting food.
Review Source:When I'm in the mood for something really greasy, I love to go hit up Sanford's and get their chicken and biscuits plate. The food is tasty and hits the spot but, being the beer snob that I am, I find it a little ridiculous that they serve craft draft beers in frozen pint glasses. Any beer connoisseur will tell you that delicious beer shouldn't be served so cold that you can't taste it!
Review Source:A cursory Yelp search for a quick lunch option yielded somewhat lame results, so my friend and I settled on Sanford's Grub & Pub since it seemed promising. One thing to mention is that this restaurant is actually pretty difficult to find... You have to go around the corner at the light and then kind of look between buildings and trees to see it since it's actually behind another restaurant (Shoot The Bull Steakhouse). Once you get over the possible navigational difficulties of finding it, Sanford's is a solid option for a good meal.
My friend and I popped in around 3pm on a Tuesday and were one of only two parties in the huge restaurant. The restaurant itself is decorated in a kind of mind-boggling way with memorabilia, license plates, signs, etc. all posted on every surface. The menu is both literally and figuratively enormous, and the options for food are dizzying. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich which was served with "Freddies" which are essentially battered, fried potato wedges (delicious).
My friend remarked that she felt like she was "in level 4 of Super Mario Brothers" which she clarified "is the big world," and I totally agree. Everything at Sanford's, from the menu, to the portions to the glasses the beverages are served in is over-sized (America!). At a very attractive price point, with friendly and accommodating service (though that could also be because it was not crowded at all), Sanford's Grub and Pub is a great choice in Spearfish for a fun lunch or dinner.
Love the junkyard feel. I actually had a couple of the vinyl LPs I saw on the ceiling above our table. The menu is huge, so if you're like me and have a hard time making a decision, be prepared to spend some time reading through it. I ended up having a burger, and unfortunately, it was overcooked and a bit dry, hence the three-star rating. Our waiter was friendly, but I think he may have been stretched a bit thin because once our food was served we never saw him again until we received the check. Overall, I'd go back if only for those onion rings!
Review Source:Solid roadtrip choice! Â We enjoy experiencing the local flavor while traveling and yelp reviews did not disappoint! Â Lots of great brews on tap served in mason jars. Â Unique junk yard theme that is fun to look at!
As previously mentioned, it's a bit off the beaten path but still convenient to the freeway. Â Hidden directly behind Killians Steakhouse. Â
Onion rings are out of this world. Â Our party had three different sandwiches, all of which were great!
The food is generally quite good and the service is great, however you'd best plan an extra hour into your lunch, as speed isn't in their vocabulary. Regardless of if the resteraunt is full or empty, they take their share of time to bring out your order. That said again, the staff is friendly and the food is quality, just plan on waiting to get it.
Review Source:This place if great!  I've never been to the south so Cajon food is really a novelty to me.  The sides are great as are the sandwiches.  Try the Fat Tuesday!  Very yummy!  DON'T order a steak or ribs here.  You will be very disappointed.  Meat is not their specially but hey... they are good what their good at.  Like the mountain oysters.  Try them before you ask what there are.  ;-)  As far as the décor:  You can spend hours just looking at the junk on the walls.  Great conversation starters.  And $1 beers!  Who can beat that!  Like on reviewer said: everything is fried and nothing is good for you.  So don't come to this place if you have any type of diet or nutrition in mind.
Review Source:My two favorite things about this delicious-yet-deepfried restaurant are:
1. The best onion rings I have EVER had. They come in a giant basket, and are super thin and savory.
2. Beer is cheap! For example, Crow Peak beer is even cheaper than at the brewery itself.
Everything is fried, and nothing is good for you. Enjoy!
We went to Sanford Pub & Grub while on vacation. It was also recommended by a friend who grew up in Spearfish. I'm a lover of any dive, especially if it has an authentic vibe. Sanford's packed with all kinds of stuff - taxidermied animals, license plates, shirts, etc. The food's great and they're not embarrassed to let you know it's the real deal with entree names like "This Little Piggy" and "Angioplasty." If you like real food, you'll like this place.
Review Source:If in Spearfish, check out Sanford's Pub & Grub. Â
This small chain (SD, WY, & MT) of Pub & Grubs is amazing to say the least.
The atmosphere of this bar is what Applebees tries (unsuccessfully) to pull off on a daily basis. Â With it's unique collection of antiques/memorabilia, patrons can easily take their time ordering/waiting/conversating without feeling rushed or bored. Â
Sanford's also boasts an unbelievably expansive food and drink menu that will leave you coming back for more.
One of my personal favorites are the onion rings and/or their fried okra. Â (Fried okra, yep I said it).
The best thing about this place is unlimited $2 micro-brew draft pints with dinner. Â Also, the sides with dinner were good. I had the cajun corn and cajun fries. Â The sides came with all-you-can-eat ribs for $16.99. Â
Unfortunately, I think the ribs were way over cooked. Â They were tough and kind of fatty. Â
The bartender was nice and there were a couple of large HDTVs to watch playoff baseball on. I was going to give 2 stars based on the ribs, but all things considered I'll bump it up to 3.
It's like walking into a junk yard, and that's the intention--like you're eating at Fred Sanford's from the old TV sitcom. And that's a big part of the fun, especially for first timers. The only thing I'd change in the junk collection is the outhouse seat on the wall by the booths. If you're looking for something unusual and offbeat, this is it.
Pub and Grub are the operative words. Nothing fancy here, and again that's the intention. Plenty of beer varieties and really good grub, if that's what you're looking for. Sports bar-type TVs all over the place, which for good or ill is becoming standard in middle road restaurants.
I've never figured out how they produce for such a big menu from that little hole-in-the-wall kitchen, but they do. Great service staff. (Four stars for me is great. I reserve five stars for "This is hard to believe!")
Doctor friend of mine took me here as a uniquely Rapid City experience. It truly was a better than expected experience. It is like you are sitting in Fred G. Sanfords living room but eating real good food. Give it a try, but leave yourself about 20 minutes to go through the extensive menu. Buon appetite.
Review Source:There is a well kept secret in SD, WY and MT. Â That is a place called Sanford's Pub & Grub. Â If you are ever out that way, you'll realize that it is a near certainty that your only option for food is the occasional McDonalds or Burger King that lines the local truck stop - but if you can hold out just a bit longer there is a place called Sanfords' (Rapid City, Spearfish and a few places in WY) that makes even the loneliest traveler feel at home - or at the very least incredibly full. Sanford's offers a great menu filled with good burgers, sandwiches and a monte cristo which is worth traveling a few hundred miles out of your way to get to. Aside from great food, Sanford's has an impressive beer selection and awesome onion rings. Â Give it a try!
