We had an excellent combination plate ( brisket, BBQ chicken, BBQ pork ribs, BBQ beef rib) and two sides. Â There was more than enough for the two of us and we took some home in a takeout box. The service was fast, the wait staff were very friendly and helpful, the atmosphere was warm and cheerful. Â The Boneheads who give this place bad reviews are just angry, unhappy people.
Review Source:5 of us ate something different fish was over seasoned and over cooked. Rib eye was blandly seasoned, NY strip was under cooked on inside and over cooked on outside, chicken was dry, hamburger was burned. They have a tesla coil that scared our 3 1/2 yr old. Very over priced very over priced
Review Source:This restaurant is now in Eureka behind the Bayshore Motel. Â Ten of us went there Sunday night, 5/20/12 to celebrate our teenage son's birthday. Â We called Saturday attempting to make a reservation for 5:00 pm and were told the soonest they could seat us was 5:45. Â OK by us. Â
While we are walked to the back and seated I noticed several empty tables and wondered why we couldn't have gotten a 5pm reservation but no biggie.
At the table was a large bowl of butter pats but no bread was ever served to us. We thought perhaps we missed it on the menu but when we were leaving we asked the front desk and got a flip 'Oh, we must have run out!'
Several of us ordered the St Louis pork ribs. Â They were horrible, the meat was dryed out to almost jerky like consistancy and an overwhelming smoke flavor. The smoke flavoring was so overwhelming that I could still taste it the next morning when I was drinking my coffee. Â One person ordered the cowboy burger, the meat had gristle in it and she could only eat less than half of it. One person wanted the salmon on the menu and was told 'We're all out!' No suggestion forthcoming about alternatives and there were only two fish options on the menu to begin with.
No wait staff ever came back to check on us or to take away empty plates. Â In fact the wait staff all seemed to be teenagers with no training or interest in being quality waiters.
The final nail in the coffin of this review was at the end. Â Two waiters came over with a small bowl of ice cream, topped with whipped cream and a candle for the birthday boy. They set it in front of him and sang happy birthday. Â I asked for the dessert menu since there were other kids sitting there wanting some too. Â Another flip response 'We're out of dessert'! Â OMG Â There is a large grocery store right across the street, why in the world didn't someone run across the street, buy some pound cake, berries and whip cream if they ran out of dessert at 6 pm? Â In fact why not buy some salmon while you're at it??
I have lived here for five years now and I have never once had this great of customer service in Humboldt. Â Super friendly and professional staff which I don't see around here often. Â I love this county but the service industry really leaves a lot to be desired. Shamus blew my mind. Â Hopefully they are able to find good folks at their new location because it makes such a difference. Â
Ok do on to the food. Â Very good down home country BBQ. Â I had the tritip with potatoe and mac n' cheese. Â My date had the half rack of ribs which was massive. Â We both thought it was awesome. We didn't order desert because obviously we were stuffed, but the cook sent us home with free cheese cake and the other half rack of ribs. Â If it was so we would come back there was no need. Â We would have come anyhow!
Great food. Â Coming from a big city, I certainly didn't expect to find a great little place like this in the middle of nowhere. Â (Really..there aren't any options out here...even mediocre food would have been fine)
The interior is very clever and obviously the owner is the inventor type. Â There's a tesla coil and a crazy water fountain going over the bar. Â The little statue of the old man also animates a bit...perhaps on the hour.
Corn bread muffins that are brought to the table are delicious. Â I highly recommend the artichoke appetizer...definitely the best grilled artichoke I've ever had. Â The lamb was recommended highly by the waiter and he wasn't kidding..positively amazing rack of lamb for a decent price. Â Everyone seemed to enjoy all of the sides that were ordered so you really can't go wrong there. Â The BBQ sauce at the table was a little weak so if you were hoping to slather it onto your meat...maybe not the best idea. Â
Serves coke products including Mr. Pibb. Â
Yes, they are a few dollars more than you'd expect to pay for some of their meals. Â Go here as a treat or for date night. Â Portions are plentiful so just split something instead of opting for multiple combo plates. Â There were customers dressed in cutoffs and ripped tank
Service was fine and the staff were friendly and helpful.
I was about to write something about parking since I usually do in my reviews...but remembered where I was Yelping from and figured nobody coming here would care :) Â Watch out for the multitudes of barn kitties wandering around on your way in!
Pricey but if you want a steakhouse in Humboldt County it's a great place to splurge after a day at the river; just smells too good to pass up when you drive past. I'm not a fan of their salads but a T-bone with double side mashed potatoes is perfect for me- can't eat more than half but if you say rare they respect that ;-)
The 'fountain' over the bar is pretty cool and the Telsa coil is pretty loud but awesome indoor '"firework show" ohh and if you go for a birthday be prepared for the owner to play guitar while your waitperson sings happy birthday and the cook bangs the bell at the end.
My son and I were hungry after a long day on motorcycles. Â (CalTrans we love you!) Â We were on hwy 36 and the smell of BBQ stopped us cold. Â We parked and were at the front door, only to see the sign that they opened at 5 PM and it was only 4. Â Disappointed, we nearly walked. Â
But Malcolm, the manager, asked us to come around back. Â We told him we were hungry. Â He invited us in and sat us at the bar and went to see what was ready. Â Pork ribs OK? Â Damn straight! Â Brought us a full rack and they were excellent. Â Pull off the bone tender, but not soft and mushy. Â Great chew with lots of dry rub spices. Â Their sauces were very tasty too. Â No sides were ready but he offered us dessert. Hot Pecan Caramel Brownies with vanilla ice cream. Â I almost licked the plate. Â
Total came to $32 (no drinks, no sides) Â You can share the dessert and the rack, they are huge.
A real gem set in the absolute middle of nowhere and that makes it even more special. The food is fantastic although many portions are far too large. I have found them to be very accommodating and genuinely concerned that you are having a good time. I have eaten there a dozen times and each time has been a good experience. I wish them long term success and hope to be able to bring guests to this out of the way little gem for years to come. My only negative comment would be to parrot what some others have said regarding the sides, not too good in my book.
Review Source:Not worth the drive and definitely not with the money. Â
$22 for a sad skewer of steam-table veggies & a couple slabs of dry, underseasoned (!) brisket. Â The baked potato was very old & reheated, so it was just nasty. Â The pork ribs were dried out & underseasoned (just like the brisket, I wonder how & how long they keep the unsold meats?), and the pulled pork was really fatty and not very flavorful. Â The mac & cheese was WAY overcooked pasta with some weird orange stuff in it that was anything but cheese.
All in all very disappointing - but it's Humboldt, where few restaurants care.
We've been to Shamus T Bones a couple of times and are definitely fans. Everything we've had here has been excellent - the beef and pork ribs, the beef brisket, the pulled pork - really, really good barbecue. The sides are good too, right down the cornbread muffin you get in lieu of the usual bread and butter. Great atmosphere, unreconstructed Country and Western with trophy heads on the wall, country music and sports on the TV. Check out the amazing fountain over the bar. Beer lovers should order a pint of the Cellblock Amber, custom-brewed for Shamus's by the Eel River Brewery. The staff are warm and welcoming and the whole experience is near-perfect - the ultimate comfort food in comfortable surroundings.
The only downside is that it's a little overpriced. For example the two-item combination platter, with moderate portions of two meat selections plus two sides, costs you $21, which seems a little steep for what you get. But considering the location, and how little good barbecue there is in Humboldt county, Shamus' still gets five stars.
My partner and I had been here twice before and had really enjoyed it. Â We decided to swing by after a long hike on a Saturday night and hadn't thought to make reservations. Â We got there at 6pm and the hostess informed us that there wouldn't be a table until 7:30. Â She offered us a seat at the bar and we accepted. Â Before she seated us, however, she consulted her reservation list again and asked if we could be done eating in an hour. Â I said yes, and she lead us to a table that had previously been reserved. Â They got the food to us quickly (probably trying to get us out of there before the 7pm reservation holders showed up) but the waitress was attentive and friendly, we never felt rushed. Â Neither my partner nor I eats very much, so we split the pulled pork dinner. Â I haven't honestly had much BBQ to compare this to, but we both enjoyed our food. Â The cornbread muffins are pretty great. Â If I were planning on staying in the Humboldt area I would definitely come here yet again.
Review Source:JESSICA......split checks SUCK for the staff, front of the house or otherwise! Its an invitation 4 mistakes in service and food!!
If adults cant do their own math then well, pay to have it done! :O)
I oddly enough have driven by Shamus 4 the past year and only dined last night w guests 4 the first time. The staff was STELLAR and the vibe was nice and chill. My lamb was a bit red 4 my taste but was still delicious. The server promptly asked to take it back but I declined and still enjoyed it.
I will for sure return and my out of town guests LOVED IT!!!
I only give it 3 stars because its Humboldt County. This place would not survive anywhere else there is competition. With that said, it was very nicely decorated, I very much enjoyed the ambiance. Kind of rustic meets modern-ish. As the food goes it was not good at all for the price. They use cheap meat. Everyone knows that BBQ sauce is just to cover up crappy meat. My steak was not the accurate size either. The sides were bland. I would suggest spending a little extra money to prefect the sides. Our waiter, also, gave us boxes about 10 minutes after the food. A little fine dinning tip, people come for the experience! We decided to take our time just because they were rushing us.
Sum it up:
Not supper bad but not worth the money.
The first thing you notice is the atmosphere. Â And everytime I have been in there, it is packed (reservations recommended). Even if you choose to sit at the bar, the service is still great. Everytime I have had a fabulous time there.
The prices may be a bit high, but you get so much food. Share if you aren't too hungry. The roasted artichokes, 3 Bone appetizer, BBQ chicken salad are just some of my favorites. Have yet to try more. My fiance has had much of the BBQ/smoked meats and says the pork ribs are the best... I haven't been to Texas but I think for this area it's as close to real BBQ as it gets.
I LOVE IT! First of all, I should never doubt my brother's judgment of bbq. I don't really like meat, but I could go carnivore if I lived near this place. It was awesome to have bbq that was actually smoked and not just smothered with sauce. Everything was amazing..the corn bread muffins, wings, rack of lamb. artichokes, beer list, etc. Loved the country tunes, crazy fountain and Tesla coil. Shamus is a must see if you live within 60 miles (or in my case, 3,000).
Review Source:Went to Shamus on a Monday night. Â We had made reservations and got right in. Â Kudos to the greet staff.
I found it to be ok, but of uneven quality. Â The pulled pork entree' that I had was melt in your mouth good. Â I had 2 sides, cole slaw and chili, neither of which were memorable. Â Apple pie ala mode was very tasty to me. Â The fact that it wasn't homemade turned my dining companion off a bit.
Even though it was a Monday, they had live music. Â Authentic cowboy with authentic grizzled appearance and authentic hat. Â Loved him. Â The kid that performed after, not so much.
The owner, a very courtly gentleman, asked if we were enjoying dinner. Â That was a nice touch. Â And our server (Karina, if memory serves) was outstanding. Â She kept our drinks full and was ready with suggestions and advice if we asked. Â She's a keeper.
I went here today with 4 of my buddies on our way back from Ruth lake. I had heard so many good things about this place and they were right! Great food! Awesome environment! Â Over all awesome! Only complaint was, it was a little expensive for 5 guys headed back from the lake, but overall I loved it. Can't wait to go back.
Review Source:Who would have thought there would be such a great place to eat in the middle of no where! This place is definitly a keeper! I have been there a few times, and I have to say that my favorite is the steak skewers. They are so tender and flavor full...everything is delicious. I suggest trying their grilled artichokes... with the special sauce. Pretty Awesome!
Review Source:Have been going to this #1 BBQ restaurant for over 2 years now. Have gone with many people & everyone goes back..yes it is that good. Make reservations & go hungry because the meals are big. The sides are wonderful my favorite is the mac & cheese and chili which I love to mix together. Its always comfortable & the staff is great. Make sure to buy a Bottle of BBQ sauce to take home. We had the most amazing Beef fillet special one night & we still talk about it.
Review Source:Now this is BBQ! True country home cooking! We had a T-bone dinner and a full rack of ribs. The meat was high quality and cooked perfectly. We had several sides including baked beans, Cole slaw veggie skewers, and  asparagus. Everything was amazing and so flavorfull. The owner came over indroduced himself and asked how we liked our meal. The interior of the place was also comfortable and attractive. I wish I lived closer and I would go here a few times a week.
Review Source:Living out on Highway 36, I drive by this place just about every time I go anywhere. Â I had never stopped to eat there until a group of golfing buddies invited me to join them for a late lunch. Â Wow! Â This is THE place for barbecue in Humboldt County, with a full menu of slow-cooked items including beef, poultry and even a vegetarian option (?). Â Hard to imagine a vegan going to a BBQ place, but they might like what they find at STB. Â The beef brisket and St. Louis ribs are wonderful, and if ordered as a main dish come accompanied by three side dishes that include beans, fries, salad, cornbread and such. Â The selection of local beer is commendable, as is the wine list. Â The service and atmosphere are as good as the food. Â Open every evening except Tuesday, and open for lunch on weekends. Â Reservations for dinner are recommended.
Review Source:My family and I have owned a cabin in Carlotta since before I was born, we seen a lot of places go in and out of the area and nothing since the old Carlotta Hotel compares to the quality and ambiance of Shamus T Bones! The food is amazing, some of the best BBQ I've ever had. The owner Chris, is inviting, friendly and knows his BBQ. The manager, Glory, adds to the friendly fun environment, both taking time to talk to all the customers! I would tell anyone within a twenty mile radius to check this place out. Saturdays have live music too! Great wine selection! Great Beer! 5 BIG stars!!!!!
Review Source:This place came highly recommended to me by the owner of a nearby winery and restaurant and he was right on the money.  It's out in the middle of nowhere, in Carlotta, on Highway 36.  You can park in the back and can smell and see the guys at the barbeque pit cooking.  The decor is interesting, lots of animal heads mounted on the walls, totally appropriate for a barbeque restaurant.  There are several great beers on tap, lots of variety, they even have an assortment of great wine by the glass or bottle.  I was told the chandeliers were made by the owner.  They're antlers arranged on iron, I think.  Very spacious inside, new paint and nice furniture and photos on the walls.  The server was managing at least five tables and did a great job and there wasn't even much of a wait for food.  They have a delicious looking dinner menu with assorted sides you can choose from ranging in price from $12-$23 a plate.  We ordered the sandwiches since it was  around three in the afternoon, and THEY WERE SO GOOD!  I had the beef brisket sandwich on ciabatta with their housemade barbeque sauce and the onion rings.  The beef melted in your mouth, you didn't even have to chew except for the bread, which was the perfect consistency.  They don't drown it in barbeque sauce, either, there's just enough to give balance.  Not incredibly messy or anything.  The onion rings were amazing.  I wish I could get them like this everywhere.  They were crispy, not droopy or saggy or soft.  They held up very well and perfectly seasoned.  I haven't had an onion ring like this anywhere.  The sandwich was probably on a four by four inch ciabatta roll and I could only eat about half of it.  It was so heavy but the bread held up with no problems at all.  The server had a to go box on the table before I even had a chance to ask for one.  The sandwiches run about nine bucks and come with fries, garlic fries or onion rings.  I can't wait to go for dinner.
