Went there for lunch with the family. Delicious salad and the strawberry lemonade refreshing. A "must" dining spot if you're vacationing in Cape Charles

This is the best restaurant in Cape Charles. Great drinks, service, location and seafood. These owners should run for Mayer of Cape Charles.

We had oysters, mussels, shanty fries, fish tacos. And great drinks!

The Shanty is a welcome addition to Cape Charles!   Great fresh food, well mixed drinks, friendly owner and cute waitresses!

This was our first weekend in CC since they Shanty opened and we visited a few times.   The food is very good.  It's casually served seafood bar food, and it's done very well.  A unexpected gem were the buffalo wings.  Every bar has them but very few do them traditional and well, and the Shandy is one of them.  It is a small well cooked lightly breaded wing tossed with a phenomenal house made habenero buffalo sauce.  Just spicy enough to be hot, but not so overpowering that you'll be feeling it for long.  Try them for sure.

The oysters were fresh and delicious.  Served quickly and presented well.

In addition to the casual food served on paper plates, they also have some finer dining specials you can get.  We tried the crab topped tenderloin with grilled asparagus and potatoes.  It was excellent.  Only complaint was the portion was small.  I think the special was around $24 and for that, in a bar, you should leave full.  I understand that in fine dining restaurants they like to give you small portions for whatever reason.  Still, though, I'd recommend the specials or the standard menu items.

Chat up the owner, John, who has some interesting stories on how he got to Cape Charles.  This is a well designed open space bar which provides great space inside and a large deck outside (with cornhole).

    Give the Shanty a try!

A good addition to Cape Charles.  This is the place to go in town if you want a cold beer and a great view, especially at sunset.  It's on the dock at the harbor but you can't access it directly from Mason Ave.  Just head to the marina.

We went about a month after the opening.  There's no A/C but that wasn't a problem even though it was well over 90.  The fans made it very pleasant.  We sat inside.  The service was quick and friendly.  Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the atmosphere.  The fish and chips were over cooked and the menu was limited.

I think this place has great potential.  Increase the choices, both food and beer and it will be the casual place to go.

Tuesday afternoon my sister and I brought our 78 yr old mother into The Shanty for lunch. We were immediately greeted by Spencer who was a first class gentleman. Our trio felt like we had dropped by a friend's house for a bite to eat. My mother, who hasn't had much of an appetite lately raved about the oysters and only parted with one. I had the softshell crab blt which was delicious. My sister loved her crab cake sandwich. Oh, did I mention the grilled asparagus...yum! I live in NY and can't wait to visit The Shanty again.

It was okay- came here per recommendation of the hotel I was staying at. It had a nice feel to it. No A/C, which I suppose that day was okay but I can only imagine how uncomfortable it is when it's hotter out. The beers are cheap. I got the fish and chips which I wasn't too impressed with. The fish was tough and had the consistency of chicken which means it was definitely over cooked. My friend got the fried oysters which were good and the buffalo wings were good as well. All in all, it was decent and the man playing the steel drums was awesome :)

We ate at the Shanty on a Sunday afternoon, on our way north to take our daughter to camp. We wanted a scenic send-off  lunch, and this causal, friendly dockside restaurant fit the bill.
Shanty is located next to the marina and coast guard station in Cape Charles,  about three miles off highway 13. A one-and-half story, square building on the water with a new wooden deck and small lawn area, the restaurant is one large room. A  bar sits in the center. Perhaps ten two-and-four top tables overlook the marina side of the building, and long rectangular tables accommodate large groups.
Along the waterfront is a glossy wood plank counter with stools. The ample space between the bar and front windows anticipates party goers on weekends and boating holidays. The interior design is of the industrial-artsy variety, with lots of wood, stainless steel and metal pipes supporting counter tops.
In addition to more traditional sandwiches and appetizers, the menu's signature is tacos -- flour tortillas with pulled pork, chicken, shrimp, fish or Korean beef bulgogi. We tried the pork, fish and bulgogi. The pork was nicely soft and shredded, accompanied by corn tortilla chips with guacamole served in a plastic cup. It was a fine, predictable dish and just what my husband was hoping for.
The fish tacos featured chunks of fresh-caught drum thickly battered and deep fried. It lacked the slightly spicy, citrus flavor and soft, flaky texture of the best fish tacos. The dish also fell short without the crunch of shredded green cabbage and punchy pico de gallo.
Likewise, the execution could improve on the Korean bulgogi tacos. The beef used in bulgogi should be thinly sliced and cooked briefly on a hot grill. Here it's served in hard-to-manage chewy chunks. It also lacked the kimchi promised in the dish's description.
The kitchen offered several specials, including pan seared scallops and watermelon gazpacho. We tried the gazpacho, which had juicy pieces of watermelon and fresh mint from the restaurant's "boat garden." The base was similar to canned cream of tomato soup and overall too sweet.
Our server at Shanty was very friendly, professional and attentive. The kitchen was a little slow considering the menu items we ordered. I hope they are able to bring their execution up a notch as this is clearly a well-considered restaurant with the potential for hosting many a memorable meal.

The Shanty has an oystershell parking lot, and the main restaurant is open concept, no A/C, nautical theme. The atmosphere was good if you're looking for an eastern shore dock bar.

The only reason I gave it two stars was that it would be a good place to have a cold beer. Otherwise, the food was awful. Four entrees ordered and not a single one was remotely good and they were WAY over priced. They have a very small menu: Three choices were $8 and the rest were $12 and above.

The service was very slow at first and we were worried but that part turned out okay. The shrimp was over cooked and not deveined. We never got our hush puppies even though our waiter said he had put the order in, but we didn't get billed for them at least. My chicken sandwich was a chewy, Sysco-like and with no sauce or garnish. It had a slice of cheddar and a thick pineapple slice out of the can. I still don't know what the stuff resembling cole slaw was. It had apples in it, but no discernible taste. Fries with old bay were the only choice offered with meal. No healthier alternatives. The water tasted like well water.

It was hot inside the restaurant and there were not enough fans. We moved outside as soon as a table was available. If you were to eat there while the sun was up, there is no shade on the deck do it would probably be pretty hot. The did have corn hole game outside and nice view of the harbor and sunset.

Again, if you are taking your boat here for a few drinks with friends, I give it three stars. To eat.....1 star.

Since they just opened about 3 weeks ago, this might be a good place to try a year from now and see if they have worked out all of their problems.

This place was brought to our attention on the recommendation of the hotel we were staying at (we had planned on dining at Sting Rays, but were talked out of it).

    I'm glad.

It took a little looking to find it, but it was well (well) worth the travel.

The location is spectacular. We arrived at 4:30 for a late lunch/ early dinner. We were only the 2nd table in there.

    Service was immediate and kind.

I ordered the shrimp tacos (with a side of hot sauce), my son got the fried oysters and a side of hush puppies.

The oysters and shrimp tacos were immaculate. The hush puppies maybe a VA style (we're used to the bigger NC ones).

We liked it so much that we bought a t-shirt.

Cold draft, golden sunset, delectable crab tostadas--what a fantastic addition to Cape Charles! Typically when you find yourself at a picnic table outside on a dock, with a paper towel napkin in one hand and a plastic cup of beer in the other, your food options are mostly fried this and fried that. Not at The Shanty! Although a relatively small menu, you'll find a few inspired dishes and a handful of fresh new flavors (cilantro lime tequila vinaigrette, sriracha aoili, mango lime drizzle). The staff is attentive, the vibe is casual and friendly, and those plastic cups? Compostable!
