This restaurant has been in continual operation for over 100 years. And while the interior has been updated enough to sap it of virtually all charm, the old building exterior in the backwater town of East Helena is pretty cool.
The 80 year old waitress started off surly and frankly, rude. But she opened up and became reasonably friendly.
But the food, OH THE FOOD!!! Truly one of the best burgers I've ever had. Served on Texas toast, the meat was perfect, the fired onions and melted cheese sublime. My wife had a steak sandwich that was beyond comprehension it was so delicious. And the hand cut, skin-on fries served in heaping portions were outstanding.
THIS, THIS, is why I LOVE road trips!! What a hidden gem And I get to be the first to Yelp it!! Seek out Smith's!!!
