Smok'n Bones BBQ

The Finger Lakes region is not a place you think of when it comes to BBQ, but Smok'n Bones can hold its own against BBQ joints hundreds of miles to the south of its location in the small town of Burdett, a couple of miles north of Watkins Glen.

My latest visit there was nearly at closing time, a time when you risk getting dried out meat that has spent too much time waiting for to be served.  But my pound of ribs was tender and moist.  Sauce was good, but I neglected to ask for it on the side.  Speaking of sides, the cole slaw was excellent, nothing but cabbage in a slightly creamy vinegar dressing, with a well balanced, smooth tang.  My wife, usually no fan of slaw, enjoyed it as well.  The boiled salt potatoes were tender and delicious.  Corn bread was adequate, but I'm not a fan of corn bread in any case, so I don't hold that against the place.

Service was good in the medium-sized dining room decorated with reproductions of old photographs of Burdett. Prices are very reasonable and a good value for the money.

best food and value in the finger lakes area. only 2 miles from downtown watkins glen ( take route 79 ). great bbq pork and chicken with huge servings. i've been going to places around wg for 30 years, and this is the best food around, never mind the low prices !!!  try it and enjoy !
