Great signs to draw you in, but it is not worth the stop. The AC unit was dripping water on my head, we waited a stupidly long time for our food. They obviously prefer you to order the breakfast buffet, because they took forever with our order. On top of that, they couldn't even fund a small box of cereal for my son - very accommodating. The food was just OK.
Review Source:Randomly found this place looking for lunch on the way to the Outer Banks. Instead of lunch I decided I wanted breakfast and ordered off the menu (instead of the buffet). EVERYTHING WAS SO GOOD. That's literally all I can say. The only reason it gets 4 stars instead of 5 is that I thought the complex was not ideal.
Review Source:We're new to the country life out here and decided to head for the border just to see what was in our new area. Having read the reviews on the BBQ we cruised in one Saturday afternoon. The gorgeous weather made the traffic heavy and even though the parking lot was full the restaurant still had open tables. I had the day's special of blueberry french toast with sausage links and my husband had the pulled BBQ plate. He wasn't impressed with his BBQ and I wasn't impressed with mine either. The cheezy hasbrowns were good though. Will I stop here again? Will I recommend it? Sadly, no to both questions.
Review Source:Have stopped here twice now--good food for the price. We stopped at the restaurant this last time and when we ordered we found out our dinner plates were half price because we came in after 4. I had the pulled pork with the mild Carolina Bbq sauce--just remember that Carolina Bbq sauce is vinegar based, I forgot. My husband ordered the pork chops--boneless. He truely enjoyed his meal. Hush puppies--not your traditional breaded and fried, they are battered and very good flavor. We stop every time on our way down.
Then after our meal we always walk around their gift shop--it is the building with the big Bbq sign on top.
See you next time
We've never been to the restaurant. We've only been to the snack bar(?) where they serve pulled pork sandwiches, onion rings, potato salad, fries etc. The pulled pork sandwiches are phenomenal--and reasonably priced. And the servers are friendly and helpful. Some things here, though, are overpriced. My wife and I ordered sides of potato salad with our sandwiches on a recent visit, and the sides, costing us $1.59 each, were basically thimbles full of very mediocre potato salad. Nothing to write home about--and ridiculously priced. We looked over the store after our meal on our recent trip and found many things in the store equally overpriced (in our humble opinion). In any event, Â the sandwiches are something to write home about, and overall it's a fun place to visit. (Just don't order the potato salad).
Review Source:Nice little place. When you first drive up, there's a shop, a BBQ place, snack bar, and the Southland restaurant. We went for the dinner buffet that consisted of traditional favorites. Collard greens, fried chicken. mac n cheese, mashed potatoes, fried fish, ect. It was $11 a plate for the buffet, which was well worth it. They also have a menu that has equally as good food. The Ruben sandwich was only $4.99 and big for the price! Great place to go if you're really hungry and looking for home-style cooking.
Review Source:While working in the area I went here during a lunch break.  The building arrangements are a little confusing as I went in the building with the huge NC BBQ pig sign on top thinking this would be a restaurant.  Instead it was a snack shop and general touristy merchandise store.  there is a restaurant  in another building which I did not notice until I had finished my meal.
I ordered the barbecue sandwich with a side of fries. Â The barbecue is offered pulled or chopped. Â Meal was ready quickly. Â Good barbecue sandwich which you could flavor with a variety of sauces. Â (I left mine as is.)
Two unexpected things in this facility ; Â You can order beer at the snack shop, and in the building is one of those "internet cafe" type businesses.
The lunch buffet is worth it's weight in gold! Â I am contented to say that since I began working in Moyock 6 months ago, I have become a frequent flyer at Southland. Â The Southern style cuisine and equally appealing Southern charm are refreshing and quite enjoyable. Â For $7.95 at lunch you can get the all you care to eat buffet which includes their to die for fried chicken and Eastern NC style BBq most days. Â The veggies are fresh and made like mom's. Â The mac and cheese is so good you have to have a steel-palted will power not to get seconds, and the desserts are just right. Â Add hot, fresh yeast rolls and a glass of sweet tea, and you have lunch fit for a Southern Belle or weary beach goer. Â
The chicken is so good my folks drove down from Hampton to try it.
We visit Southland about every other week. We've eaten in the snack shop (in the main store) and over in the restaurant. The snack shop is just that...burgers, sandwiches, etc. Nothing fancy, but okay food.
We love dining over at the restaurant. We like their buffet (especially the chicken). However, we often order off of the menu and the food is great! The servers are attentive (and this place can be packed!). We've never had food that wasn't good.
Southland can be a super busy place, especially in the summer. It's like an all-in-one stopping place for folks who are traveling. They have gasoline pumps out front, the souvenir store that carries way more than just souvenirs, convenience store items, freezers with food items to go (their BBQ, their cole slaw, sauces, etc), the snack bar, clean restrooms and a cigarette shop. But it seems like no matter how busy they are, the employees are very friendly to the customers. I really like that.
Love this place. Have stopped by a few times when we pass through on our way to/from the OBX. Just perfect for gas, local and delicious BBQ, ice cream, snacks, gifts, etc.
On my most recent trip, they had fresh boiled peanuts in crock pots. I have never seen this and had to get a cup of the Cajun ones, yummm so delicious!!
Perfect rest stop, and if I lived closer I would definitely be a regular.

Southland is sort of like Wall Drug in South Dakota. You stop here even if you don't really need ANYTHING, but you end of leaving with some cheap gasoline, some quality Carolina BBQ, some Blue Bunny ice cream, and maybe something from their gift shop. It's right on the VA/NC border and draws in lots of traffic from people heading to the Outer Banks (like us). We made it an annual stop, and it was always fun to see what things were like in the Southland. This place is pretty hard to miss, but it's worth a stop, if only for the experience (and the pulled or minced pork, if you are into that sort of thing).
Try the pulled pork BBQ! Â The BEST in the area! Â I always make special trips there from Hampton. Â It is usually quite busy there, but usually the food comes quickly and its well worth the money!
Also, you can explore the gift shop and buy cigarettes there. Â There are also fireworks there, but nothing that flies up and goes boom, you have to go to South Of The Border for the "good stuff".
I have never checked out the actual restaurant, I have only bought the BBQ from inside the gas station portion of it. Â The ice cream is really good too, Blue Bell ice cream!
I go there every time I visit home. It is right on the border of Virginia and North Carolina, next to my hometown, Chesapeake. It is famous for the cheap cigarettes, the gas stations, the lottos (it has both NC and VA lottery), the tourist craps, and the food. It is the place the residents of Hampton Roads come to and buy the fireworks (the big fireworks are illegal at the homes in the Hampton Roads).
I really prefer the original Southland Trade, which is still in the business just past this place. The BBQ is really good at the original Southland. I had to go there and buy a carton of cigarettes for my father's 3 packs of cigarettes a day habit when he was alive. LoL.
At this newest Southland Trade, my family friend scratched his FIRST EVER lotto ticket in his life (at the age of about 21) and he freaking won $100! I was so jealous. LOL. You can have a lot of fun at the lotto machines at this station.
For chocolate lovers, you cannot leave the original Southland without try their Rocky Road Fudge (made with marshallows, nuts, and fudge). It is very soft and impossibly delicious. The only real rocky road fudge anywhere in the United States (at least, for me)! Actually, I am trying to find a solution with my mother in Chesapeake, VA for shipping the fudge to me in Austin, TX in the summer months.
