This place in wonderful. Really wonderful. If you are on the north end of town this is the place. Good, no great, coffee. The shop is a wonderful place to meet others and be surrounded by art. The art continues to be changed out every month of so, and the evening events, sometimes art openings, sometimes concerts have always been extremely enjoyable. I love to support this establishment.
Review Source:Terrible service. Read on... Â
Parked outside on a Thursday night. The Open sign was turned on and at least three other signs were on and it looked very inviting. Â
So we walked inside. The place had 30 or move people, but when we walked up to the corner we were told they were closed. We must have looked startled since there were a ton of people. We asked, "What about everyone here?" Â
"Well, we are only open for their event" Â
HUH? Then why is your Open sign turned on? We asked if we should turn the open sign off and were rudely told "No, we are open for them." Â
What's the point of being open for a private event, yet still having your open signs up and then when people walk in you are rude to them?
While visiting my uncle in San Luis Obispo, he invited us to accompany him on his morning ritual of walking the dog from his house to this quaint coffee and tea house. Â The walk there was quite nice as we arrived at his favorite destination. Â The employees were happy to see him and prepared his usual coffee with a light pastry. Â My sister and her husband ordered breakfast burritos that were surprisingly large. Â I ordered a non fat iced mocha and Joe K. had a latte. Â We shared a lemon poppy seed scone. Â Everyone really enjoyed ourselves as we sat outside at the one and only table that they had room for just by the front door. Â
This coffee house is also an art gallery that displays quite a few interesting paintings along its walls with their asking prices. Â While this shop looks small from the outside, the inside is very spacious and can accommodate a large crowd. Â They also have a place sectioned off where live music is performed on certain nights.
The coffee, the food, the staff, and especially the company made our relaxing morning visit a highlight of my vacation. Â I could really use a lot more of these!
This wonderful coffee spot is a favorite of my girl friend's uncle. Â We recently visited SLO to help him celebrate his 80th birthday and he has this daily ritual of walking his dogs to Steynberg Gallery for a cup of coffee and a bite to eat every morning. Â We were given the honor of accompanying him on his morning ritual one fine morning during our stay. Â A ritual that I must admit turned out to be a very nice experience. Â
The barristas were extremely friendly and helpful. Â The art on the walls was worth checking out and the food and coffee were really good. Â I had a wonderful Latte with just a touch of hazelnut syrup and a lemon poppyseed scone. Â They put just the right amount of hazelnut syrup in my latte to taste the hazelnut without my coffee being unbearably sweet.
Steynberg Gallery is much larger inside than it looks from the outside with plenty of seating and plenty of room to move. Â
The walk wasn't too bad either.
Fun, artsy-fartsy coffee shop and art gallery right around the corner from the inn we stayed at on our trip to SLO and wine country. Â Walked over in the morning to grab coffee the first day and then coffee and breakfast the second morning. Â Lattes and caps were really delicious, gotta see if I can find Grounds for Change coffee elsewhere... their breakfast food was really good too. Â Brother ordered a curry wrap (bit too heavy for me in the morning but he liked it), and dad and I split a ginger spiced apricot scone. Â Baristas were all really nice, and we even got to enjoy Friday Night "Art After Dark" in SLO, with live music!
Review Source:What a unique place. Â Where else can you take in local artwork, enjoy homemade curry, drink organic/sustainable/fair trade coffee, or a beer. Â
I was introduced to this place by some friends who worked there in college. Â The coffee (Grounds for Change) is some of the best I've had, and I've had a good share of coffee. Â I like so much in fact, that I now order it online since I've moved from SLO and can't just pick up a bag from the shop.
Also, they serve bagels from a local shop. Â Get the everything bagel, you won't be disappointed. Â
I spent many hours studying at this place - they have free wifi. Â There are a ton of tables with ample surface area and enough snacks and caffeine to power you though whatever academic challenge comes your way - or maybe just the crossword puzzle.
I don't tend to go to coffee houses all that much, but this place is different. Â The art for one is gallery worthy. Â The customer service is great. Â The tea & coffees are pretty darn good. Â The entertainment there is special, and overall great experience. Â It's quaint and cozy, but maybe a little small for some venues - yet somehow they make it work and people come!
Review Source:Steynberg is THE PLACE. Incredible coffee, amazing menu items, support of fair trade/ local/ organic growers, beautiful art, indie shows, wifi, super friendly owner/ baristas, great location.
I've been so impressed by the food here; each of these barista's can COOK. If you become a regular, there is a ten time punch card that ends with a free cup of coffee I would recommend taking advantage of. Â Another perk? You don't have to pay for parking.
Steynberg's proof of excellence is in its client base; so many SLO regulars come in on a consistent basis to hold small meetings, read newspapers and study. Besides the high schoolers that come in on their lunch break, the setting of Steynberg plays to San Luis Obispo's adult demographic. It's setting is comfortable, and unlike many other SLO coffee shops, people go here to work but not be seen.
Also, go to one of their night shows if you get the chance. It's a very intimate setting, you can grab a couple beers, and get close to some up and coming talent. STRFKR, a band playing at Outside Lands this year in San Francisco, has even played there. Â
Stop on in Steynberg at any time, and you will not be disappointed.
this was my 2nd favorite coffee shop in SLO after Kreuzberg CA.
friendly service(they warmed my cycling gloves in the kitchen!) and probably one of the best everything bagels w/ P.B. I have ever had which was a pleasant surprise. tasty coffee and espresso drinks, friendly service and cool art to check out.
Owner Peter Steynberg, a sophisticated art professional, Â allows only art that meets his high standards of excellence. Â Careful use of wall space to enable full appreciation of each piece on display. Â Â Good relationship with the local art community and well regarded in the art world in California and beyond.
Review Source:I love this neighborhood, yet city wide coffee house in the best sense of the word. I go there for their concerts, their Pecha Kucha, their lectures and movies, and for their great lattes and comfortable rocking chairs in which to read the Times.
It is the best of what small town living is all about. Friendship, culture, art, and comfort. Oh, not to mention that Mr. and Mrs. Steynberg are hands-on owners and lovers of art. They host awesome openings.
We needed some real coffee to get our day going, and this was recommended by the front desk of our hotel - and as luck would have it, it was on the way!
We ordered our coffees and then stood staring, drooling, coveting everything in the bakery cases in front of us. Â Everything looked amazing, but we departed, coffees in hand, sweets still in the cases.
The coffee was dang good - organic, fair trade deliciousness. Â You can taste the love in this coffee. Â If I return to SLO, I can see this being one of my "spots." Â It was love.
So's I used to work here and I figure it has been long enough that I can write a review without appearing prejudiced. Â
Quite frankly, this may be the best quality coffee you will find in town.
I never drank coffee until I worked here, but now after having worked at a couple other coffee shops, I really miss the Grounds for Change espresso! Â It's fair trade, shade grown, organic - everything a proper coffee snob could hope for. Â
Peter, the owner, really cares about making sure everything is the best quality and that people are having a good time there. Â
Thanks to Pocket Productions, Steynberg also has some great intimate concerts. Â When I was working there we had the Dodos, Mountain Goats, Pony Up!, Port O'Brien, The Finches, and more.
This coffee place was just around the corner from my motel. I was getting ready for an early night's rest, walking back to my room, when I found it. I always enjoy a good espresso after dinner, so I hopped in here. They were getting ready for some live music show, so I decided to stick around for that. The guitarist was pretty good, and I very much enjoyed the first part of his act. But the second half was him singing to some electronic pre-programmed "soundscape" he made himself. I guess he was trying out opera. That was way too avant-garde for me.
Anyway, the espresso is very good and they have a huge assortment of teas. The art gallery in the back is a little pretentious.
