It's the battle of the regional Delis round two! Â While Blue Table fought hard to try and knock Agoura Hills' Italia Deli & Bakery off of the top spot, she went down having been bested 5 stars to 3, but could newcomer Sub Contractor Sandwiches pull off an upset?
*spoiler*: No.
Star 1 - Was the service good?
It's always dangerous when there's somewhere to eat close to my gym, as I often binge off of some misplaced notion that I've earned it just by being within a square mile of an exercise facility. Â That being exactly the case, I decided to deviate from Italia Deli & Bakery, my all-time favorite sandwich location, to give Sub Contractor Sandwiches a fair shot. Right off the bat, I was a bit disappointment with the menu selection. Â There are really only four hot sandwiches to choose from with different toppings, and their lack of a porchetta option was truly painful. Â However, the guy behind the counter was very nice and my Large Steak Sandwich was served in under 10 minutes. Â Star Granted.
Star 2 - How were the portions relative to the cost?
After tax, my large Sub Contractor Sandwich was priced just a few cents short of $10, which is just a bit more than a regular sub at Italia and just under one of the premium subs at Blue Table. Â Needless to say, I was expecting something hefty, I mean, the name "Sub Contractor Sandwiches" doesn't quite give the impression of pansy little panini sandwiches. Unfortunately, for $10 my sub probably weighed in at a little under 400g, and the amount of steak on my "Large Steak Sub" was truly a travesty (see the pic). Disappointing, and it should be noted that many of the user pics are deceiving! As the pictures are taken directly overhead, one would assume that there are layers of tasty steak when it's likely actually just one thin but spread out layer if my sub can be used as a benchmark. No Star Granted.
Stars 3/4 - Did the food taste good?
I must say, both the steak and chopped onions in my sub were absolutely fantastic, and complimented the mayo and mustard splendidly. Â However, coinciding with the miniscule amount of steak that was actually on the sub (literally no more than five or six thinly sliced pieces) I had to work my way up to a bite that had an acceptable amount of steak after several bites of just bread, lettuce and chopped onions. Single Star Granted.
Star 5 - Would you eat it every day if you could?
At the end of the day, Sub Contractor Sandwiches comes in at third best after Italia Deli & Bakery and Blue Table (both in nearby Agoura Hills, Yelp them stat). Â Additionally, it very literally pains me to say that with the amount of sandwich that you get for $10, you really are better off going to the Subway that's virtually in the same shopping plaza. No Star Granted.
Oh my! I am very sorry but these 5 STAR reviews have to be set up or you guys just came back from a space mission eating nothing but powder packs.
So bad that when I eat this sandwich a instant gloom was cast. The sun went away and the shards from my dry ass bread blew away in a cold breeze.
I have eaten here twice, but neither time I felt like it was worth it. Â I had chicken parm sandwich and didn't care for it. Â I also had their namesake, the subcontractor and wished I had chosen something else. Â All the toppings come diced which I think is part of the problem. Â I might try this place one more time, but I am not expecting it to be much better.
Review Source:Forget Subway! Sub Contractor is by far the BEST sub sandwich place in the Ventura County!
So many delicious subs to choose from!
*Turkey, Avocado & Bacon (BOMB!)
*The Californian (GRUB!)
*Pastrami (The BEST I've ever had!)
And to top things off, nothing beats the fast and friendly customer service.
5 stars for: cleanliness, TASTE, and customer service.
This a great local sandwich joint!
Their service is fast, prices are reasonable and I'm a huge fan of their vegetarian sandwich with provolone, avocado and marinated mushrooms. YUM!
If you're looking for a fresh and tasty sandwich in the Oak Park area, make sure to check these guys out.
Enjoy!
I have been coming to the Sub Contractor since I was in High School and this is a guilty pleasure type of place. They are a bit pricey for their food but the quality you get in return is awesome and all of their fixin's are fresh.
My favorite is the bacon and cheese sub. I get this with provolone and add mushrooms with mustard and mayo. Sometimes I will add lettuce but nothing other than that. It is amazing to just get a huge sub on crusty bread with crisp bacon and cheese.
All of their other subs are good to and filling. I miss the fact that I don't live down the street but still visit every so often.
I used to be a regular at sub contractor because I grew up across the street and it was a quick spot to get a good meal. It was a five star spot for me when I was in middle school and high school because they gave you a lot of meat, had a tasty dressing on the subs, and I was a big fan of their bread. Having gone back recently after many years away, the quality of the sub is still great, but a bit pricey. I still love the food, just not an every week type of thing anymore.
Review Source:Sub Contractor makes the best subs period. You can keep all the fake sub places to yourself. Subway, quiznos, etc.... All don't even stand a chance! You talk about quality of meats quantaty of meats sub contractor brings it! This is the only real sub place out there. If you haven't tried it please do and you will be amazed and fully satisfied. Once you try this place you will understand what a real sub sandwich is all about!!
Review Source:Sub Contractor is one of the best Sub Sandwiches I have ever had. They are so good that I accidentally capitalized the word "sub" and "sandwiches", however the tastiness merits unnecessary capitalization. Owned by a nice family who has been around for for years, they make a great variety of sandwiches that will satisfy even the pickiest of food critics.
It is very much a local joint, but if you are in the area you have to stop by a grab a bite to eat. It is probably one of the top 3 most exciting places to go in Oak Park. Growing up there, I took advantage of how good the subs were and now that I live far away I lay awake at night dreaming of a large Turkey Bacon Avacado, no mayo of course. Mayo makes me queasy.
Stop in for a sub. You'll like it. If they actually offered contracts that required you to eat subs exclusively at Sub Contractor, I would definitely enter into a 3 year/200 Sub contract. Yum.
Once upon a time, this place was very good. They like to provide large portions of food which is good, although you will pay for it. They are pretty expensive.
I am a pretty basic guy, and like a standard turkey sandwich with all the fixins. I am under the belief that a turkey sandwich should be made of turkey, not a processed lump that tastes like the jelly that is packed in with a canned ham. This is the case with Sub Contractor.
Some of my friends like to get the steak sandwich from there, and they do keep a clean restaurant.
This place rocks!
I grew up in Oak Park and was a regular at Sub Contractor and now that I've moved away I still make it a point to hit it up whenever I can when visiting the family.
In all my years of going here I've never had a bad experience and I don't know anyone who has. The sandwiches are great, good quality ingredients and a clean restaurant.
Here's one I'm really proud to write about, because there is no way that you could find this place by accident. It's a local joint that only the locals know about.
Two years ago I had a little contract in Westlake Village and of course I needed some place to eat lunch. The guys at the office say 'Sub Contractor'. I'm like, what? It turns out they weren't trying to cut me out of my contract for expensing lunch, but that this was the place to get a good pastrami.
It's way out of the way but very worth it. Big hunkin' sandwiches made to order. The place fills right up. We happened to be in there with the soccer team from some private middle school as it turns out. It was kinda funny watching all these spoiled rich kids in their perfect uniforms eating with the white collar, security badge crowd. But good food does draw people together, even in the scorching hot hills of Southern California.
It's in the very corner of the supermarket mall, so there's plenty of parking. If you're ever up in Westlake Village it's worth the drive. Leave your air conditioning on when you park.
