Went there for drinks. Â The rooftop bar is gorgeous, great views of Bristol and the water....the daiquiri was just horrendous....I asked if it was made with fresh fruit and she said, no. Â Â We use a mix....so I said...how bad can a Commercially available, commercially chosen mix can be ??! Â Â Well, to my surprise, it can be really bad. Â Â The drink was watery and it tasted like expired cheap Kool Aid.. Â Â I guess next time, just stick to things that come in a bottle or draft, that would be the safest bet.. Â LOL..
Review Source:Location, great. Â Staff, friendly and on top of things. Â Drinks made well. Â My only complaint is the food I received. Â I ordered the Potato Encrusted Salmon. Â I was expecting a nice piece of Salmon with mashed potatoes covering the top. Â Instead, I received a piece of Salmon, battered, with crunched up potato chips and then deep fried. Â It was a little dry and not what I expected in a restaurant. Â A corner Diner, maybe.
Review Source:To me, summertime in Bristol means drinks on the roofdeck at Thames Waterside. I love to grab a table or stool overlooking the water, and spend a sunny afternoon throwing back G&T's and Dark & Stormy's. There's often live music and people watching is great. Perched on the harbor, Thames Waterside is the perfect spot for day-drinking on a gorgeous day and watching the boats sail by.
Review Source:I went here for drinks with some friends on a Saturday night. I didn't end up having any of the food, but the drink menu was great. Our waitress was also very friendly and attentive. The setting was nice in the downstairs bar and porch, and I assumed there was a great view when it was light out. The upstairs seemed a little cold when I went up there but it's probably enjoyable in the summer.
Review Source:One stars for location and nice service but thats it. I've been here twice and never really enjoyed my meal. I've tried the salmon, the calamari and the steak tips. The salmon was just rolled in cheap potato chips and was wayyy over cooked. The night I ordered the streak tips the boyfriend order a steak as well. We both ordered medium, which means there is still pink in the center.........this steak was as well done as you could possibly make it. So sooo disappointing, not only was the steak very well done but the steak tips were almost crispy. The dish came with mash potatoes, which are my fav but these potatoes though has a great texture lacked any kind of flavor. No butter, salt, pepper, natta. I will probably never eat here again. Such a bummer but I would say save your money and don't spend it here because it will just be a wast. Come here for drinks but thats it.
Review Source:Thought I'd venture out of Newport into Bristol for a day. Â Walked in here about 2:00 and the outside patio was busy, so took a seat at the bar. Ordered the steak & cheese panini which came with fries or a salad. Â Took maybe 10 minutes and looked appetizing. Â Fresh onions, green peppers, mozzerella and tendet steak grilled on a thick pits-type bread with a fresh salad on the side. Had tyo request red vine vinegar for the salad because the cruet was never cleaned (ugh). Sandwich was OK, but not great seasoning. . Â $12.95 plus two house wines later, the bill came to $30.00 with tip for lunch. Â I'd say it was OK - need to pay attention to those oil & vinegar sets that sit around the bar...not too clean.
Review Source:Everyone so far has it just about spot on.
You come here for the view. Â From spring through early fall, you grab a drink, a friend, and an Adirondack chair on the deck. Â Please. please do NOT go an hour or so before sundown, because you may take the last of the chairs, and then I can't sit there. Â Watching the sun set over Bristol harbor is a great experience.
Their drinks are pretty good, and fairly reasonable.
Their food is palatable and a bit pricy. Â
Come here for drinks--either pre- or post-dinner. Â No, make that post-dinner, so i have a chair to watch the sunset and contemplate the meaning of life...
...over a Dark and Stormy!
COME FOR THE VIEW DO NOT COME FOR THE SERVICE! Â I have been coming here since it was Goff's and they must have kept the wait staff. Never friendly, always inconvenienced by having to wait on you and way too good to check if you need anything. However, the view on a summer's day is lovely and worth suffering the staff's wrath! Â The food is average and priced based on the view.
Review Source:Eh just about covers my thoughts about Thames but the view/location adds a star. The food is okay and that would be fine but the prices are a little high for what the food is. The service is great. The view/location is the only thing that makes it spectacular. If it's a warm summer night and you are looking to dine with ambiance this is the spot the deck is huge and has tables plus adirondack chair where you can enjoy your drinks.
Review Source:If I'm looking for a beer with a view I'd rate this place 5 stars and I do stop by every time I visit my son at RWU. Â However, I don't order food any more. Â Great waterfront property. Â And largely because it's such a nice location I say shame on you. Â The food is really lacking and it just shouldn't be that hard to put together a better menu. Â This should be the number one pub in Bristol but it won't get there with this grub. Â I rate it 2 stars in hopes that will encourage them to step up in the kitchen.
Review Source:Lets make this short n' sweet....
We arrived by boat (AWESOME!)
Sat outside on the water (AWESOME!)
Waitress was very nice...but food took forever to arrive...but it was good.
We weren't in a rush so it wasn't a big deal but it took a REALLY long time to get lunch and the place was crowded on a weekday for lunch (refreshing to see!) but there was no reason for it to have taken that long.
I had tomato and fresh motz salad and my lunch buddies had a Caesar salad, the sausage pepper and onion sandwich and a fish sandwich and it all was great!
Shorten up the wait time folks and you've got it all down!
I have been to this place several times before and it wasn't bad. I'm not sure if there were the same owners as now, because the food and service wasn't that bad. However, now knowing that the place is owned by the same owners as Agave, the most awful place in town, I probably would not have gone there this visit...it also explains why I am giving such a low rating.
The view, is spectacular as well as the roof top bar which is also a very nice treat since there really aren't many in town. The service is extremely slow, the food...lets talk about the food. The stuffies were BURNT not overcoooked, BURNT; they barely had any clam flavor more or less any clams at all! The filling, surprisingly was moist but flavorless. I ate one and had to have the server take them away, which she did politely and took them off the check. My sandwich was okay, nothing spectacular but the fries were cold, tasted freezer burned. My girlfriends Joan roll was awful. The chicken somehow had a bone it in, there was more filling than actual chicken and her fries also were cold...we'd complain but we barely saw our server.
The drinks were okay, not sure who taught them all how to make Long Island ice teas but they were more like lemon coolers, no real color and barely any alcohol.
I will give it to the bartenders upstairs, they were talkative, polite and the view is pretty darn good for a nice time during the day. Unfortunately no food upstairs which is a bit of a shame, but understood if they can barely service the downstair correctly, I doubt the upstairs would get anything good out of it!
I got to say to the owners, maybe you should find another line of business because pretty much everything you've touched has gone to garbage...get some help or get out of the hospitality industry. Just sayin...
Another review for an awesome view. They have Adirondack chairs over looking the water, you can grab a beer, hang out on the chairs until your food comes. The clam cakes, I must admit were pretty good, there were actual whole clams hanging out in it (not chopped up! whole bellies, in the clam cake!). the chowder tasted like it was from a can, and the chorizo, clam and kale dish didnt actually have kale on it but rather some other green. but overall, this place was better than I thought it was going to be. Definitely going to try it again.
Review Source:The view at Thames is a 10. Â Stunning. Â But this isn't a review of the view. Â It's of the restaurant and that's barely a 2. Â If they could change the food and service this would be an amazing spot to eat. Â But as it is right now it's quite sad to think about that lost potential. I'd recommend a Restaurant Impossible intervention.
We ordered calamari and after a very long wait were brought a massive bowl filled with peppers, tomatoes, and olives and topped with a few pieces of overfried, chewy calamari. Â It was honestly very bizarre. Â I love calamari but have never seen anyone serve a HUGE bowl of peppers and a few pieces of calamari. Â For entrees we ordered salmon and the fish and chips. Â Both were so overcooked they were barely edible. Â Even the fries were gross. Â
And the service at Thames was beyond slow. Â We sat at the table and it was probably 15 minutes before the server stopped by to get our drink order. Â That pace continued throughout the whole meal, dragging dinner into the 2 hour mark just for the 2 of us.
If you're heading to Bristol, do yourself a favor and pass this one by.
There's one reason and one reason only to nip into Thames WS Grill - adirondack chairs line the end of the outside dining area, and you can take in a drink, with a view, while waiting on your order.
The food is standard costal pub fare - lots of fried fish options - with an above average price tag. Â We ordered clams and cherise with kale, which was fine if not a bit bland and chowder with clam cakes. Â Being a non-native, I was taught how to properly dip-dip which was fun. Â Cakes came with large chunks of clam and were apparently a standard for future comparison. Â The chowder was "just chowder" - nothing to write home about. Â
Had to ask our waitress for water three times before she delivered. Â Check was dropped before being asked. Â Would have loved to have lingered but with so many other lovely places in Bristol, why here?
The atmosphere is incredible as you can sit upstairs and look out at the water and have a drink or some food in a laid back "Rooftop Bar" setting or you can venture downstairs and sit in the dining area that is half covered while the other half is within 10 feet of Narragansett Bay. The food is mediocre at best but the service was excellent. I would suggest getting the Stuffy as it was by far the best thing I had on the menu.
Review Source:During the winters, the bar is nice to relax and have a couple beers, especially if you don't feel like getting caught up in the crowds at Aiden's or Gillary's. The drinks are a little more expensive then they're counter-parts across the street, but it's all about what you're looking for in ambiance and style.
Now, during the summer, this place is great. The view from the top bar is spectacular and there's plenty of seating available up there was well. I've spent many a sunny day just sitting on the back side of the deck and watching the boats in the harbor.
The food isn't bad either: I used to come here a lot for apps with friends and I always thought that the service was good, the portions were fine, and the food was tasty. It's not going to rock your socks, but, c'mon, it'll do the trick.
And everything tastes better when you're staring at the water anyway, right?
I am giving this place 2 stars simply because of the view. Â This place has one of the best views in Bristol, but it stops there. Â The food is honestly horrible. Â Why is this not a seafood restaurant offering fresh local catches???? Â The place does have some seafood, Â but it is just not good. Â The roof top is great as well as the patio. Â The only meal I have found that was good here is the Pecan Salad and the Lobster Roll. Â The quality of the food is just not there. Â The restaurant does provide really good service as a bright point.
I would suggest visiting this place only for drinks.
2 level bar and grill on the harbor of Bristol. Upstairs outside patio with bar. downstairs full bar, indoor and outdoor seating. Sounds like a can't miss right? Wrong! Well it's not a complete miss. Honestly you can't beat the view of the harbor. During the warm weather months, why would anyone want to sit inside when coming here. Sit outside, have a few adult beverages while overlooking Bristol harbor..taking in the smell of the salt air..wishing you were rich enough to afford one of those big boats anchored in the harbor..errrr sorry that was a daydream of mine I experienced when I came here :-D
Anyways I have been here twice and I have to say, I wonder if a lot of restaurants today put on their applications that being non-attentive and lacking people skills as a prerequisite. Honestly I just don't understand why these establishments employ such trolls to represent their business to paying customers. (Sigh) I digress. Well my first time I came here, me and my buddy decided to grab some lunch and some afternoon beverages (of the adult variety). We arrive and there are maybe 5 customers here. So a table outside was easy to obtain. Our waitress was average at best. Drinks took longer to get than our lunch. Food was...well I said to myself that an order of Sam Adams with a side of Corona would've satisfied me more.
Second time I came here with my wife. This was not too long ago and to was pretty chilly. They enclose the outside patio with that thick tarp like plastic with clear windows. Nice that you can still "eat and drink outside" without being outside :-P
Again we come here for lunch, and there were maybe 4 people sitting at the bar. We get seated. And we wait...and wait...and wait...and wait...finally our waitress comes over! I'm like did you walk over from the pizza place across the street to take our order? geesh! Anyways, this set the theme for the rest of our experience. Wait long for food to arrive, personality of a doorknob. Food below average. From what I understand, this place is under the same ownership as Agave in Bristol as well. So that should also tell you something.
Although I gave Thames Waterside 3 stars, I must say the location come spring and summer is a great place to chill and enjoy some adult beverages over looking the harbor. I don't know if my 2 visits were out of the norm for the bad service. So when the warm weather hits, I will definitely be hitting this spot up with an open mind.
This is a quaint, nautical restaurant on the Bristol waterfront. The draw is the outdoor seating and roof deck, and for all you boaters, a free place to dock for a few hours. The menu is mostly salad and sandwiches, but they are reasonably priced and good. The fries were a highlight, and my Mediterranean inspired panini was also worth trying.
The place was clean, and the service was friendly, but not spectacular.
I'm a sucker for waterfront drinks and roof decks. This has both. Good spot for a couple of drinks with a good view. Was really quiet/slow during the day on Labor Day weekend, so I am assuming it doesn't get too busy. Â Nothing special about the drink menu or beer/wine selection. Service was slow. Location and view are awesome.
Review Source:Location and view--five stars on a sunny summer day. The restaurant is open to the outside deck with beautiful views of Bristol Harbor. It's located in a small retail strip at the end of a dock, so parking space is very limited. (Very nice retail shops in the strip and surrounding area as well)
Prices are slightly higher than some area rest.--Grilled chicken sandwich and a Tuna Melt with two Lemonades 30.00...but overall an enjoyable experience. Our food was good and the waitstaff was friendly.
4 stars for location/view/deck. Â 0 stars for food and service. Â Great place to have drinks on Bristol harbor but that's about it. Â They covered the back deck which is disappointing. Â It was nice to get some color while sitting back there. Â They do have a deck up top which has great views. Â Don't eat here, all the food sucks. Â The service blows too. Â It's too bad because a few easy fixes and the place could be heaven on earth.
Review Source:I can only rate the place based on the rooftop bar and drinks, but that's fair dontcha think?
The bar upstairs is lovely - overlooking the harbor, nice seating, shade, helpful staff. Â very promising! Â But, the drinks are a lot pricier than they should be and they don't have Malibu. Â I only drink one thing, and Parrot Bay rum and cokes just aren't all that satisfying to me. Â Plus, our tab was $18 for two drinks. Â That's right, two drinks. Â I guess you pay for the view, huh? Â I'd rather pay for a good drink!
Food has gotten better. I try to order a panini or the daily specials can be good. It is weird though, the sandwiches come with fries and is a huge serving, but the main dishes do not come with a side and have small portions for the price.
The view is amazing. We always order a pitcher of Sangria which is HUGE and is only $25, it contains at least 6 glasses. It can get hot during the day, but at night if the weather is right it it so nice to sit outside!
The hostesses are a little underdressed which is weird, but the wait-staff is nice. The guy bartender is very friendly as well.
Seaside bar w/ a quality roof deck, Adirondack chairs w/ a great view of the sun setting off Bristol Harbor and a decent beer selection. Â The food has improved in quality but remains "hit or miss." Â Not sure I understand the harshness of some of the other recent reviews - it is certainly possible to be disappointed when eating here but it has become a lot less common since the place changed hands. Â
It is called having a proper level of expectation people. If you want a great meal I can direct you to several places in town - if you want a casual bite on the water then I recommend you order "smartly" and not over reach the current culinary limits of a place that is more "dive bar" than "gastro pub." Â You'll be happier and can enjoy a cold beer and maybe some decent conversation.
That being said - the new name is a snoozer. Â We still refer to it by its old name JG Goff's - or simply Goff's.
Definitely a place to go for the view- not the food.
Been here several times, and have always found the food to be your basic pub-fare, good but not gourmet. Â
However, I had the salmon recently, and even with low expectations, it managed to disappoint me. Â Most likely cause: old fish. Â Yuck.
Sunsets- great. Â
Al fresco offering - perfect.
Location and staff - very nice.
Food - stick with the basics. Â You probably won't be disappointed if you do, but you will not be wow-ed either.
Roof deck seems refined
Popped collars but no cheap beer
Fireplace inside
If you just want to grab a drink and not be elbowed out of the way at another bar in town (Gillary's, Topside, etc.), this is the place to go. It seems a little more expensive, and since it's primarily a restaurant, it's less frequented by the Coors Light set. Head upstairs to the roof deck in the summertime and finish out your night in relative peace.
Glad I didn't check out the reviews before I came here since it probably would have led me somewhere else. Honestly, I had a pretty good experience - waterfront dining, good to great food, great service and reasonable prices. It's the type of place I would recommend and go back to.
I would recommend the mussels (there's three sauce options - go with the spicy option and ask for extra garlic bread). I'd also recommend the Pasta Frutti di Mare - not as good as the mussels which were great, but this was a solid dish. Also the cashew crusted tilapia was solid because of the amazing sauce they had it in.
I'm not sure why other people hate this place - I'm not saying it's the best waterfront dining option in the area, but it's definitely a solid pick.
I have to say, Don F inspired my review. I too have experienced this place both on a food and a cocktail level. I have never been impressed by the food- funny enough the only thing I really ever enjoyed was the nachos and yes, I probably was somewhat intoxicated. The lunches and dinners are extremely unimpressive. Cocktails did not offer me anything I was ever excited about. Bartenders were not personable. A whole lot of hype for a whole lot of nothing.
Review Source:I'm surprised to see so many bad reviews. I had a turkey panini  and thought it was very good. For one it was genuine turkey and for two the cole slaw was fantastic.
As everybody else said the view is great, and apparently at sundown it's even better.
They had some decent beers so I had some. Cool chairs for watching the world go by with boats in it on the bay.
The girls got burgers and they were robust and delicious. The bun was of a cheap bun variety but I heard no complaints from the famished femmes.
3 stars for the location. Â Ended up eating here twice while in Bristol, but more for the location then the food. Â First night was dinner....had the Greek Chicken wrap with a side salad. Â The wrap had no flavor. Â Went with a panini for lunch after kayaking the next day and that was a much better meal. Â The portabello was a bit mushy, but the sandwich was much more flavorful than my meal the night before. Â JP had cole-slow as his side with his sandwich and it was delicious (we all know cole-slaw can be hit or miss). Â My fries were good too.
Downstairs and upstairs decks are nice. Â We ended up there with the wedding crowd both nights, so it was fun.
I'm actually really surprised not to see this place on Yelp yet. It used to be called J.G. Goff's, and it used to have awesome steak tips, an open-air deck to eat on, and free wi-fi.
Now it is Thames Waterside Grill & Bar, has half the menu it used to, no steak tips (except a gross steak tip sandwich), and no wi-fi. Also, they enclosed the whole outside area, so no more breezy summer days with the chance to catch a tan (or a burn in my case) during lunch.
We used to go to this place at least once a week for business lunches before they switched over, but they've broken our hearts over and over again with the sickly tasting new food that we switched to Quito's for the summer and Leo's for the winter.
Also, the waitresses all act like it's their first day on the job and we've waited more than an hour for food for 4 people, and close to that to get a check. If the food wasn't so bad, the service would be the reason we don't go anymore. This, however isn't a new problem, it's always been that way here.
Oh I also forgot to mention that they do have live music during the nights on the weekends, but it's so packed, don't expect to move or get the attention of a bartender.
